Detailed Reviews
I arrived at this Steakhouse with 3 star accommodation after an 8hr train journey. The hotel is a mere 10min walk from the train station/ferry port so is well located. Checked in and found the room clean (apart from the poo stains in the toilet..) and warm. TV didn't work so I popped downstairs to ask for help - to be told a little abruptly by the only member of staff 'I'm too busy at the moment I'll come to the room at 5 - 1.5 hrs later. Not very customer focussed.
Day one breakfast ok - cereal/omelette etc. Day 2 awful. The cheese and tomato omelette had raw cheese in it, was like cardboard and like the beans and potato pancake - was luke warm. The other thing was that breakfast was like a council vehicle depot with blokes in high viz dirty overalls occupying the whole seating area - accompanied by f this f that constantly! Trust me I'm no prude, but there were some older people there and this was pretty awful. They really should have been asked to sit in an area together - it reminded me of a greasy spoon cafe - sorry !
Like I said the room was fine, no central heating but pretty effective electric heating. However, on the dot - 4.45am each morning - presumably when the lads came in from their shift - a herd of noisy elephants came into the room above me talking and walking around - you could hear everything meaning no sleep until they went to sleep. Found out on the last morning they were contractors.
Wifi was intermittent and the room facing the road noisy.
So overall a bit disappointing - I wouldn't recommend it - checked into the Columba tonight which is cheaper - on the sea front - no elephants !!

Spent a couple of nights at the hotel but felt it was very over priced, room was ok with a very comfortable bed and was clean although there was mould in the bathroom. We had a room at the rear of the hotel overlooking the carpark which could get a bit noisy in the morning with I assume staff arriving for work, managed to get a car parking space with no problem. In the bar it was over £9 for two alcoholic drinks and £1.90 for a can of juice😱which put us off having a meal at the hotel as we do like a few drinks with our meal,we had breakfast included which did include a cooked breakfast although it was very sub standard with everything being very dry there’s also lots of cereal, yoghurts, fruit and meat to choose from the second morning I opted for the omelette which was nice. Its in a good location with easy walking distance to the town and harbour but we felt it in no way warranted the price we paid so therefore we wouldn’t return.

Comfortable hotel room, excellent reception staff, very welcoming and attentive. Some road noise as to be expected being on the main road but not too intrusive and very convenient location. Nice breakfast. Overall good value.

Where do I start?? Given I was willing to pay £120 per night to stay here, I was expecting a bit more than the basics, but no, I was wrong. After driving past it twice (it is like something from the 70s outside) I finally found the 'free parking'- a tiny, pot hole covered gravel pit at the back of the hotel. I parked here then went to check in (through the wide open fire exit that also leads to the bedrooms) In the 10 minutes I was in the hotel, I came out to find a sign under my windscreen wiper stating the space was for guests only. Very friendly!!
The corridor/ stairs leading to the rooms stinks strongly of grease/fat from the restaurant next door. It's very dark and there are stains all over the carpet. The room was small but nice enough, but the view was of the roof and street below. The fact that the hotel claims to have wifi in all rooms is not true, I had to ask at reception about it and was informed by a receptionist that I would have to use it downstairs instead as it "hadn't been working for a while". She was rude and I was made to feel I was in the wrong for even asking.
We did not sleep well at all, the bed uncomfortable, the room boiling hot and so unbelievably noisy- a mixture of slamming doors, busy traffic from outside and the fact that the walls are paper thin. We missed breakfast by 5 minutes and so ask the waitress if we could get a coffee instead. It was clear that we had annoyed her by asking, she literally threw the cups and saucers on to the table. Terrible service.
I was so disappointed by my experience, we cancelled our second night and went to a much better hotel. To add insult to injury, whilst looking for another place we saw the Rowantree advertising rooms for £30 less than we had paid. A truly awful experience,I would never stay here again. The staff don't know what good service is and the hotel is a complete rip off.

I have stayed in this hotel about 3 years ago and it was acceptable for a short stay. It has changed hands and is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The owner/manager is so rude, the food is way below average and our room was filthy. I asked the owner for perhaps a reduction in the room-rate (from £40 per person per night) and he hit the roof and suggested we leave. We did!

We stayed at the Rowan Tree Hotel Oban in Scotland for one night in August 2005. It is just an ordinary pub. I didn't enjoy our stay, noisy rooms, no remote for the television, less than inviting bathroom and a very ordinary dingy dining room. I wouldn't stay there again.

Today we stayed at the Rowantree Hotel in Oban.
The first thing you will notice when you enter the car park is the bad greasy smell of the Restaurant.
Our room was to the front, so we only were confronted with the greasy smell on the stairs down to the breakfast room. The only bread available for breakfast was plain toast. Besides that you could have your standard eggs, bacon, sausage thingy.
The room itself was quite big, but did not seem to have been cleaned thoroughly before we entered. There were fingerprints everywhere in the bathroom.
Maybe we just had a bad day in the off-season, we don't know as this is our only stay.

We stayed in Oban over the Christmas period (22-27/12/2017) and I booked Rowantree hotel based on reviews I read on Booking.com and Tripadvisor. Hotel is located on the main street with the parking in the yard.
There are 2 entrance to the hotel: 1st main entrance through stakehouse and 2nd through backdoor from the parking lot. Next to the door from parking entrance there were kitchen door, which were always open, so smell of fried oil is spread all around the place.
Heath and safety is a huge question in this place:
-Stairs and areas between floors were covered with bags of dirty bed sheets and towels
-Access to the kitchen - basically anyone can get in there as door is open
- Wooden construction on the sealing of the breakfast area doesn't seem safe at all
Room was small, when we arrived toilet was dirty from previous guests, so I had to go and get the brush from the storage and clean it myself. View from the room is to the parking lot and toilets (see attached picture). Don't open the window in your room - everything will smell of fried oil!
25/12/2017 there were an accident in the hotel on 2nd floor where we were leaving - in the middle of the night there were huge argument between guests (screaming, smashing doors) and it lasted about an hour before night manager was able to get to the floor to check what is going on there. This accident is unacceptable in the hotel and should be fix immediately by the staff. We complained about this situation to David at the reception and he promised to come back with the compensation proposal in few days, which never happened. Then we visited hotel again 2/01/2018 to ask about feedback and compensation and there was a lady working at the reception, she also said that manager will come back to us. 2 weeks passed and there were silence, I send email to the hotel myself asking to clarify situation and received absolutely unprofessional answer from the "Hotel Manager" Micheal - see emails in pictures.
Also it seems like staff is drinking/hangover all the time - lady who is working at the reception and serving breakfast was shaking and sweating at Christmas morning...
I would not recommend anyone to stay in this hotel, please avoid.

Booked this hotel for an overnight and the hotel rooms etc have just recently been refurbished and they are super. The bed was like beds in the big hotels in London huge and the room was lovely too with lots of nice touches. The Bathroom was excellent, good shower and hand wash and shower gel and shampoo etc. Only three things stood out, one no lift which is not good for elderly or disabled people. The residents lounge wasnt very big and the Lights in the hall came on eventually when you went towards your room door but once I couldnt actually see where the room was. On arrival unfortunately the maid forgot to leave milk for us to have but as soon as we asked it was sent up to the room. The breakfast was good but had it been as good as the one we had the previous morning I would have given this Hotel 10 out of 10. Fruit juice was in a carton - could you not big a few big cartons and put out the juice in a jug nicer. Only a few pieces of fruit and yoghurt. The choice was good for either kippers, scrambled egg on toast, poached eggs on toast or full cooked breakfast but I felt that my cooked breakfast could have been more - 3 rashers of streaky bacon, one sausage, one tomato, one fried egg and half of a large mushroom it could have done with a potato scone or beans or even two sausages. It was very good however. I would recommend this hotel and if I am back in Oban I would stay there again.

Sat 29th June 2013.
My girlfriend and I went for a meal at The Steakhouse. We arrived at 7.15pm and were seated and given menus. The waitress did not smile or make eye contact. We ordered two beers. My beer arrived, half of which was already poured into a high ball glass. (This is not normal and down to bad training)
We looked at the menus and waited and waited. Twenty minutes later a young man came up to take our order and apologised for the delay.
He took our order and disappeared into the kitchen. Then we waited, and waited. People who arrived after us started to get their food delivered. I waited until 8.00pm and went up to the bar to check with the manager how much longer our food would be. Just as I was speaking to him my food arrived. The manager did apologise for the wait as did the waitress but the Manager looked at me as if I was bothering him. He was not interested in what I had to say.
I sat down and looked at what I had ordered. Looks like the chef could not distinguish between chips - which I had ordered - and roast potatoes - which I was given - and the pork was overcooked and dry.
We ate our meal and went to the bar to pay and leave. The waiter who took our order apologised again and told us that
the reason for the long wait was because the computer was down and they were having to rely on writing orders in check books. This was the first time anyone gave us an explanation for the long delays. Maybe if this was explained prior to seating us we would have been a bit more sympathetic (plus we had tickets for an 8.30 show which we didn't want to be late for). A girl calculated our total bill and then gave the money and our bill to the Manager to give us our change which he held onto and then proceeded to serve another customer we then had to wait another few minutes to get our change.
I have worked in the catering industry for over twenty years and I always used check books. Frankly, this was not the problem.
The problem was the Managers lack of enthusiasm and passion for his job. He needed to take responsibility and lead. This is what managers do, hence the title manager.
I will never eat in this establishment again not just because of this incident but because of lack of passion and enthusiasm. We are keeping the staff in employment. The least the staff can do is smile and look as if they are enjoying themselves.
