Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.

The Royal Hotel Cardiff garners praise for its variety of high-quality amenities, including the acclaimed comfortable rooms, a good breakfast selection, and a prime location that offers convenient parking. Guests commend the cleanliness and comfort of the rooms, though some note the decor could be refreshed. The hotel's service is generally well-regarded, with staff being polite and helpful, although the breakfast service can sometimes slip. While the value is seen as favorable, with competitive pricing and direct booking deals, events may lead to higher rates. Despite effective triple glazing for noise reduction, disturbances can still be an issue, particularly on higher floors. The hotel's atmosphere is often described as welcoming and stylish, with cleanliness being a standout feature. Its central location is consistently lauded, enabling easy access to local attractions, although it can contribute to the noise level.

Lovely hotel, everything it says it is. All the convenience and trappings of the usual chain hotels/rooms but done that little bit nicer, and for a competitive price. Breakfast was excellent, the room lovely and staff very friendly and helpful. Would def stay there any time visiting Cardiff. Discounted parking close by was a bonus as we needed the car this time but also close to the train station.

We have just got back from a one night stay in the cinema room for my sons 8th birthday.
We were greeted by a friendly lady at reception yesterday and check in was easy. We were already warned that the lift to the bedroom floor was out of order and this was no problem. When we arrived at the cinema room my son was blown away!! His two favourite things in one - a hotel stay in Cardiff and a PS4 in the room!!!! Every gamers dream apparently 😁 there were some lovely tout he’s such as complementary tubs of pringles and a mini fridge with little cans of coke and some water.
The room was really clean and comfortable and plenty of towels and soaps, shower gel etc were available.
We ordered room service via what’s app and it was delivered in no time at all and was delicious 🤤 the overall charge was very reasonable.
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay and making my sons birthday so special. We will definitely be returning 😁

We have stayed in The Royal a few times now and can't fault it. We have always upgraded to a deluxe room and you get a Free Bottle of wine and a £5 bar voucher so this alone almost covers the extra cost. Rooms are amazing, staff are really friendly and helpful and the location is in the middle of Cardiff and only few hundreds yards from Station - ideal !!. Looking forward to our next stay.

Stayed here for a couple of nights; being one of the first guests after the start of the easing of lockdown.

The team have clearly put a LOT of thought into how to make things work in the current circumstances, from calling prior to arrival to sort check in, through plenty of hand sanitiser, to a very helpful guide as to places that will do takeaway food etc.

The hotel itself was great. Incredibly convenient for Cardiff Central station and for the Civil Justice Centre, as well as a wander up to the castle.

The breakfast was fantastic - definitely book direct to take advantage of this. Really good freshly cooked hot breakfast and great coffee.

Very helpful and friendly team of staff and a great stay. I know where I'll be staying in Cardiff in future!

I stayed 4 nights last month at the Royal. I had asked for a room quiet from outside traffic or pedestrian noise, and my room was totally quiet! Luxury soap, shampoo, and conditioner were provided in the room, in addition to instant coffee, teabags, and instant hot chocolate (which was delicious). The mattress was comfortable. Breakfast included full English breakfast which some days was cooked to order and other days was buffet. Breakfast in the very handsome Scott room, also included cereal, delicious cheese including a Welsh cheddar, and fresh fruit including melons & grapes. Desk staff were very nice. Staying in the hotel, each time, I entered from the outside, I needed to buzz in, so the hotel is very secure. When I entered with luggage at St Mary's St, I did not realize an elevator was further back, and walked up too many flights of steps, so look for the elevator! The Royal is very central to sights & places to eat & drink.

Great hotel ideally situated in the center of Cardiff room was lovely, iron, hairdryer, ironing board and tea and coffee in room didn't have breakfast but heard that it was really good. Staff were lovely they were brilliant when my husband took ill. Thank you for that. Will definately stay here again. I love Cardiff and its great when the Rugby is on. The only downside to that is that prices go up everywhere including the bars. But always a great weekend away.

A find in the centre of the Welsh capitol that we'll definitely return to! Found online, this hotel, the oldest in Cardiff, is located above the Slug & Lettuce and O'Neils in St Mary Street. Literally 5 min from the Station, Cardiff Castle, Motorpoint Arena & the main shopping centre of St David's, this hotel couldn't be better placed. Access is restricted via an intercom to reception on the 2nd floor, providing safety and assurance to hotel guests, and lifts provide a reliable form of travel. Although our room was 5 floors above street and thus nightlife level, there was no noise pollution and so no disturbed sleep. Rooms were contemporary, well decorated & maintained and had all the accessories needed - drinks making facilities, hair drier, iron, good TV , etc. Buffet breakfast was tasty, varied & plentiful. Service from the staff was also friendly and efficient, excellent. Highly recommended for a quiet stay in the centre of the vibrant city of Cardiff.

We stayed 1 night over the bank holiday and Pride weekend. The Royal Hotel is in the heart of it all!

Our room was above the pub / nightclubs and thankfully the very well glazed windows did the trick! Whilst there was some club noise (it would have been almost impossible to have blocked it all out) it was bearable until closing time.

The room was very big and very comfortable with a big tv to match! The air conditioning was working perfectly and was greatly appreciated.

The buzzer entry (on both sides of the hotel) worked well. The reception staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming.

The breakfast was very nice and a lot of choice (continental and cooked). The Captain Scott Room (dining / venue hire) was impressive and tables spaced out and laid very nicely with a choice of different teas and preserves.

They keep bees at the hotel and goods made from the hive are on sale (candles, soap) at reception. They made a nice gift for a friend!

We chose to park somewhere other than the nearest NCP. It added to the cost of the weekend but given the great price of the accommodation it was no problem.

We hope to stay at The Royal Hotel again soon. Thank you for a great stay!

Location cannot be faulted , right in the centre of Cardiff . Very clean and modern well furnished room , asked for a quiet one and wasn't disappointed . Bar area nice and very good prices . Reception and bar staff very helpful and friendly. Only negative was the breakfast experience , buffet style that had some items that had gone cold and overcooked eggs both fried and scrambled. Also there were six members of staff in the dining room which felt a bit uncomfortable. All in all a decent hotel just needs a breakfast rethink.

Dear Peter M Thank you for your feedback and comments following your recent stay with us. We are pleased that, in overall, you had an enjoyable stay with us. With regards to the breakfast we’re sorry if you found some items on the buffet not ideal and that you felt you couldn’t raise it with the our staff. Our heated buffet unit and heats from bottom through heat elements and from hot lamps at the top, we usually find that items get overcooked; however, we do ensure that the buffet is replenished regularly by management throughout the morning. The buffet only gets used when it is exceptionally busy and the staff would have been there ready to make sure that they are available and able to respond immediately if beckoned by guests, or looking out for any obvious issues. We are sorry that you felt our staff were unapproachable and that you couldn’t ask them for assistance. We will take note of your comments so that when we operate the buffet in future we will add signage that we do expect our guests to ask for help if they need it.

After a disturbed nights sleep at another hotel the previous night, I called The Royal early on the day of arrival to ask for a quiet room. I was placed in a large room on the top floor and had a very comfortable, peaceful night - thanks!
There is a small 'unloading' area on Westgate Street behind the Royal where guests/luggage can be dropped off and a quick 'U' turn takes you back to the Westgate NCP (entrance on Quay St - just 5 mins walk/1 min drive from the hotel). The hotel is located VERY conveniently for the main shopping/pub/restaurant area, and adjacent to the Millenium and Cardiff Arms Park stadia.
Friendly, helpful reception staff made this hotel a firm favourite for a return visit - highly recommended.

There is a NCP Car Park in Westgate Street which is probably the nearest. However it has the usual NCP height restrictions so it depend what your requirements are. There is no realistic street parking nearby.
