Reviews summary

The Angel Hotel enjoys a central location that is highly regarded by guests for its proximity to Cardiff Castle and local amenities. The cleanliness of the hotel receives commendation, with spotless rooms and tidy public spaces, though some improvements could be made. Opinions are divided on service and value; while the staff is often described as friendly and professional, there are mentions of occasional service lapses and concerns about the value, given the additional parking costs and outdated facilities.
While the grandeur of the reception area impresses, the charm doesn't quite extend to the rooms, which, despite being spacious, suffer from dated decor, noise issues, and temperature control problems. Amenities like the breakfast are appreciated, but guests suggest that some aspects need refreshing.

Detailed Reviews
I wish I could say this hotel was great but each time I stay here one thing always lets it down. It’s a different thing every time too.
Location is great, right opposite Cardiff Castle, the centre of the city is minutes away, it has reasonably priced car parking although the bays are very narrow!
The lobby and reception are opulent reminders of the buildings history and reception is always well staffed and efficient. The staircase to the first floor is a grandiose affair. To subsequent floors not so inspiring but at least since my last visit has had a revamp and a nice new carpet.
The rooms are adequate and mostly recently refurbished by the looks of it but try to avoid rooms near some of the old fire doors which can be noisy as they tend to slam shut.
The old Otis lifts are definitely parts of the hotel that haven’t been replaced and are rather disconcerting. Doors that don’t open smoothly, aged interiors and a back of the mind feeling of imminent breakdown.
The bar staff were tip top on this visit, efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. The restaurant for an evening meal was the downside this time. 6pm, three tables of two guests each already seated and perhaps twenty or more empty tables. I asked for a table for one and after admitting that I had not booked I was told to go sit in the bar while a table was found for me. I could have found one of over twenty myself in seconds and only a few of them were booked!
This is so so infuriating, more so as I was looking at the booking list at the same time as the waiter and so far the whole evening had only seven bookings.
I sat in the bar and I waited, I waited and eventually decided that I should eat elsewhere as I had a theatre engagement at 7:30 and I wished to eat before the performance. That sort of incident is like something out of a Two Ronnies Sketch and I don’t appreciate it.
Breakfast in the same restaurant was more as it should be, staff having no problems seating me at one of the empty tables. A bit of a limited selection but what was there was good. Glad to see marmite available ( I always take a lot just in case) but sadly no fish option which is a bit of a pity.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear there is always one area that we can improve on, but am glad that you enjoyed your stay with us on the whole. I will pass on the comments to the restaurant team who will look into why the basic courtesy in the evening was not fulfilled. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I stayed for only one night at the hotel. Arriving through the doors it was obvious this is a building with lots of history and character. The building is a great example of Victorian architecture and has been tastefully modernised without affecting the character of the building.
Check in was swift and I was given my room on the third floor, although I wasnt given directions so missed the lifts which are located behind you as you walk towards the stairs.
I arrived at my room on the 3rd floor and it was nice and large. Bathroom was decent and the room had some character being a Victorian building. One thing that was noticable was that the floor was sloping which took a bit of getting used to.
The bed wasnt as comfortable as I had hoped, although It didnt affect my sleep and I slept very well. Despite the city centre location close to a busy junction, I didnt hear any noise from outside.
There were areas of the room that needed updating like some of the plug sockets and the light next to the bathroom mirror was broken and the extractor fan in the bathroom also broken, however, a heated mirror meant that I didnt have to dry the mirror to use it.
Breakfast in the morning was good, plenty of vareity and the hot food constantly refreshed so everything was fresh and wasnt left out too long.
Overall a great stay and would stay again if I was back in Cardiff.

Breakfast was poor value for money and the food was slow out the kitchen, no fault of the servers. The receptionist was more than happy to extend our on site parking for the awful dining experience. I did like the location. The room was spacious and clean. Modern interior and up to date furniture. The bed was comfortable and when i got too hot in the night, reception staff were very good at providing me with a desk fan despite it being 01:30. The bathroom was usable but nothing special, it served a purpose. I would also suggest having a bigger variety of toiletries on offer in the bathrooms. Shampoo 2 in 1 and a bar of soap is a bit inadequate.
Polite staff, a little overworked I would say but they definitely were doing the best they could.
I like the ambience of the hotel, the staircase and chandeliers are pleasant when you arrive.
Social distancing is achievable and sanitisation is a priority here should you be to follow guidelines. Which you absolutely should, in my opinion.

We stayed here on New Year’s Day. And booked Through Groupon we payed £79 for a three course meal with a bottle of wine, also included was the breakfast, the hotel is clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The room was very large but very very hot, the radiators were switched off but was still to hot.
The evening meal and breakfast were really good.
Would I stay here again yes especially through the groupon deal.

We booked a 2 day break using Wowcher deals, on arrival we collected our keys and went straight to our room, the hotel had a very impressive entrance and there are lifts to all floors as well as stairs. Our room was very clean, a great size, bed was very comfortable, good linen on beds too. The bathroom was very clean and modern offering a bath and shower option, and free toiletries and nice clean towels. Our deal included a 3 course evening meal and full breakfasts on both days, We had the loveliest restaurant staff to serve us, the choices were great and the food was well cooked and tasty, the meal also included wine, a choice of red, rose or white and a bottle of water, we tried rose and white and both, were excellent quality, all delivered in an iced bucket to stand at the table. Our table view was overlooking Cardiff castle which was so impressive. Breakfast were a buffet style offering cooked, cereal and croissants etc, again all excellent. The meal times are staggered to avoid overcrowding, you were not rushed and the atmosphere was really pleasant. location was perfect as we were next to the castle, you can visit this for free, and the Museum was 7 mins away on foot, we had a great visit to both. Bute park is also opposite, as is the Principality stadium. Shops were endless and a great selection on offer to please every purse. all in all we loved our stay and thank the staff for all your care and hard work. We will definitely visit again and would recommend highly.

Staff: all the staff were lovely, very polite and welcoming especially the receptionist.
Breakfast: we ordered the vegetarian breakfast, the vegetarian sausages felt more of a dinner sausage as it had broccoli in and didn’t really imitate a full English breakfast if that’s what they were going for. It didn’t look appealing and the beans looked like they had been there for a while. We were given a small glass of orange or apple juice which I felt was a bit stingy and a pot of coffee/tea. There was no menu due to COVID and I felt a bit rushed because of to decide what I wanted for my breakfast.
Afternoon tea: as part of our package we got an afternoon tea, it was egg sandwiches and pickled onion with cheese and a few cakes with scones. I didn’t expect it to be all hand made but it felt very cheaply done and would not recommend.
The hotel bedroom: the furniture is very dated and worn. The seat in our room was clearly years old and the bed was very soft and bouncy subject to your preference. We found a few blonde hairs on the bed which put us off. The air con was very weak and due to this had a very poor nights sleep. There was no water or mini fridge in the room so had to make do with warm bottled water. The carpet was stained me
The bathroom: the tiles had mould on them which again put me off and I felt very dirty. I find shower curtains a bit random in 2021 and unhygienic and felt uncomfortable I would definitely NOT have a bath as it looked grubby. We were provided with hand towels and bath sheets and there was a heated towel rail.
Would not return or recommend for a special break
Pros: 3 minute walk to bars Restaurant and shops
Friendly staff
Cons: Terrible breakfast
Dirty hotel room and bathroom
Not modern and worn appearance

I initially booked this as a romantic break but sadly ended up visiting alone. 1st impression was pleasant, an unusual situation courtesy of Covid but the young lady at reception was pleasant and helpful. Moving through I was greeted by an elegant stairwell with a large Christmas tree, akin to a scene from Home Alone. Very impressive!
After this, things went downhill. The room was incredibly small, a huge chunk of the porcelain was missing from the front of the sink and overall the room felt grubby. The corridors were the same, the hotel feels overdue some tlc.
Onto the restaurant, wooden Cafe style tables with no table cloths and just minimal effort. The menu was laminated A4, like a seaside coffee shop, I would have been embarrassed if my other half had been there - romantic it was most definitely not.
Wine was placed on my table, not poured, not even opened, just the bottle dumped on the table. There was no care nor finesse about anything. The food was reasonable but again, not the level of a romantic 3 course meal.
Breakfast was reasonable but again felt more like a cheap Brighton hotel, at least the waitresses were very pleasant.
On the plus side, location for central Cardiff is perfect and parking was easy. Great for an overnight trip to Cardiff but don't expect too much and definitely look elsewhere if you want to treat a significant other.

Are you actually joking? We couldn’t stay @ your hotel as it was dirty sorry wrong word to use, it was filthy,
We checked into our room (103) and really was not happy so went back to reception & they moved us into room (105) which was worse.
My wife decided it would be better to stay in room 103 & clean ourselves as we are carrying around disinfectant wipes due to being in a pandemic. And being a health & safety manger she knows about standards We cleaned all touch points & all the hair upon hair that was built up on surfaces.
We made it as clean as we could & started to unpack, as my wife opened the wardrobe she became really upset as there was so much dirt & fluffy dust it was unreal. We at that stage decided that this was unacceptable & asked for a full refund as we lost complete faith in your establishment. If the rooms weren’t clean we were worried about the kitchens and were supposed to be eating there also.
I have included a couple of photos.
On arrival there is a big sign explaining about COVID-19 explaining the deep clean of rooms which is blatantly not done.
Very upset as this completely ruined what was supposed to of been a special occasion for us.

I regularly run races in Cardiff and the surrounding area, so like to stay in a hotel enjoy a night out, do some shopping and catch up with my cousin when I do. As I travel solo I tend to look for cheaper deals for the dates I'm staying, because of this I have stayed in many hotels in cardiff. I hadn't stayed at the Angel before, but I will look forward to another stay. The location is convenient if planning a city centre stay, close to all the shops, restaurants and pubs, plus there is plenty of choice within walking distance on the too good to go app!
I checked in after running Barry Island 10k. Check in was quick with a polite young lady. I stayed in room 218 on the second floor, overlooking the castle so on the main road. With the windows shut I couldn't hear any traffic noise, and I'm not used to traffic as I live in a rural town off the road. There are however ear plugs available if you want them. My room was spotlessly clean and tidy (as was the rest of the hotel) with nice decor. The bedding and towels were pristine with extra towels in the wardrobe. It was a hot day and the temperature controls acted quickly in the room to get to a temperature I liked. After a very hot race I needed a shower. I could have stayed in there hours! The power shower eased my aching shoulders, easily controlled temperature, and the same with the bath when I got back later that night. The room was large with a table and 2 chairs so I enjoyed a dinner purchased from the top good to go app for £3 from a restaurant 5 minutes walk away at the table. Then I chilled for a couple of hours before going to meet my
cousin watching films from the bed on the large tv. The bed and pillows were so comfy I didn't want to go out! The supplies in the room were basic 4 each of tea bags, coffee, sugar and milk and a 3 pack of biscuits; soap, body wash and shampoo/conditioner combined. I ran out of tea before I went out but was supplied with extra from reception, and 4 of everything is pretty standard in hotels. When I returned I had a bath as it was a hot evening, got into bed and slept well until the morning only waking to my alarm at 10. I left my case securely behind the desk when I checked out (another speedy and polite process) and went shopping.
The only (very minor) negatives are that there were only 2 plug sockets in the room by the desk and I tend to have my phone on charge overnight watching Netflix but there are no sockets next to the bed. If there had been 2 of us staying after a race we'd have needed to charge 2 watches and 2 phones plus use my straighteners etc. The other minor negative was the hairdryer. It was permanently fixed with a curly cord. To sit in front of the mirror and blow dry my hair, I had to really pull the stiff cord to get it far enough to dry the left side of my head, which took a fair amount of strength, so had to dry my hair in 3 goes due to my arm aching!

My husband booked a suite for a surprise for our wedding anniversary as I had never stayed in a suite before.
I have stayed in nicer, basic rooms at budget hotels.
I know this hotel is an older building,it is in a shocking state of repair.
Firstly, the guest robes were frayed and crunchy, (never been introduced to fabric softener).
In the bedroom, scratches inside the wardrobes, also a big square of the previous room colour. The paint is peeling and flaking from the ceiling by the window. Outside of the window needs painting, the grass needs removing from the window. Window rattles. The floor under the radiator needs cleaning. Lots of wiring under the desk.
The lounge, scratches on the walls, the furniture is chipped. Paint peeling from the ceiling by the windows.floor under radiators needs a clean. The air conditioning vent in the ceiling needs the old paint covered up.
Hospitality tray is one you would find in a budget hotel room.
A comfy sofa in the lounge would be good instead of hard chairs.
Bathroom, unit by sink badly scratched, mirror over sink needs replacing.
1 tiny shower gel, 1 tiny shampoo and 1 bar of soap for 2 ppl!!
NO liquid soap in the bathroom.
Old screws in the wall by radiator, exposed wires on radiator.
Bath chipped.
Black stains edge of bath.
Fan in the ceiling needs a clean.
Breakfast following day just as bad, mushrooms over cooked, hash browns over done, tomatoes and bacon hardly cooked.
Toast was on the menu as coming with preserves, just comes with butter.
