The location is excellent for the Bull Ring centre and market, both only a short walk away. Likewise New Street station is very close. We drove and took advantage of the discounted parking at the Chinatown car park which is an easy walk away.
Being fairly regular Travelodge users we are used to their standards which are generally quite high for a budget chain and we rarely spend much time in the rooms other than for sleeping and getting ready.
On this occasion having booked a “super room” our expectations were high but unfortunately they were not met. The only thing that we noticed different was a coffee machine which was nice but not a game changer. On the other hand the bathroom had an empty soap dispenser, it was well cleaned and there was no remote for the TV. The latter was sorted out by housekeeping who brought us another.
As always the staff were helpful and friendly and the hotel has a pleasant bar.
Despite our reservations the location and value of this hotel means we would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to others wanting to visit Birmingham city centre.
Each time I’ve stayed at this hotel I’ve received great service consistently from the manager Jessica, and the receptionists Ilusca, Aimee and AJ. They’re all very interactive, great to talk to, and are conscious of making sure each visit is an enjoyable and comfortable experience.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a decent sized room with good facilities, in a central location of Birmingham City Centre close to bars, restaurants and shops, at a fair price.
Our first room we were assigned was covered in dirt and dust. Looked like it hadn't been used for a long time (understandable considering the pandemic) but you would have thought they would have been extra stringent with cleaning considering! Thick layers of dust on lamp switches, skirting boards, kettle, TV remote and cups. I politely asked reception if the room could be cleaned which wasn't allowed due to the pandemic (also understandable) so we were moved rooms which was slightly better but still very substandard especially considering a virus is going round. We chose to stick with the room as we assumed all of them would be the same.
A few hours later I went to have a shower and after running both th shower and the tap for 10 minutes there was no sign of any warm/hot water. I called reception where they simply said they could move us to another room for the second time and nothing else could be done as no one was allowed in our room to check.
We declined this offer and said we would just leave because we had enough at this point and weren't prepared to move to a third room. The young Asian man who I assume was the manager didn't offer any apologies or try and make us stay, he simply said 'put your room keys in the box'....... So I did and just walked out.
I have never in my life had to complain or get moved rooms or actually just left without even staying in a hotel because I hate confrontation or making staff feel bad but this was by far the worst experience I've ever had. I have wrote to customer services demanding a full refund.
PS- the price of the nearest car park was more expensive than the room.....
Great bed, no aircon, some slight noise from other rooms, two kitkats in my room instead of biscuits. Plug sockets by the bed with usb points,
I'd visited not long after lockdown had finished.
A terrible 4g signal in that area meant I paid £6 for 48 hours of slow speed Virgin Media wifi.
Down-side lots of derelict land around the hotel undergoing redevelopment so expect some building noise, room size even in Super-Rooms one of the smallest every experienced in a Travelodge, room card keys just appear to stop working for no reason and you need to get reception to re-programme them, was not just me noticed a few people experience some issues during my 48hour stay. As others have pointed out you can not pay by card in the bar which in 2020 is just not right, you can pay by card at the bar in other Travelodges I have stayed in.
Breakfast was good both mornings but the bar seating area is not that big for number of rooms so glad I was down early for my breakfast both days.
Would I come back yes most likely if needed to stay in that part of the city again, easy to locate and rooms are clean and have all you need for a couple of days even if on the small side compared with other hotels in this chain I have stayed with.
The room itself was very basic with very little hanging space and one shelf to put any other clothes on and this was too high for me to use (I’m 5ft 5inches.
On leaving the room the first morning (9.30am) we put out a sign which let the cleaning staff know that we would like new towels. We arrived back at 4.30pm to find we couldn’t get into the rooms again. We had to go back to reception to ask them to reactive the keys for both rooms - again we were not the only ones with this problem we witnessed at least 4 other couples with the same problem. The staff told us they were sorry but they had been short staffed today.
Whilst going to and from reception for various reasons the cleaner got into the lift with us and said she had been working since 9am and had only managed to get to floor 2. So it was no surprise that when we got back into the room the towels had not been replaced. We were on floor 6.
The hotels bar was open and we decided to have a drink. Whilst we were sat having our drink, we witnessed several people sliding on the floor with one person going completely down. Fortunately they were unhurt and the staff eventually put out wet floor signs.
As we were leaving for the evening we mentioned to reception that we would like new towels.
When we arrived back again later in the evening our room keys didn’t work so we had to report back to reception. When finally gaining entry there were still no towels so we had to go down to reception again to request these and this time the reception staff gave us some towels.
Overall (for the price we paid £191 for 2 nights per room) it was shocking service and will definitely not be returning.
The hotel corridors and bathrooms smelt of stale smoke and was extremely basic with very little space to put clothes, no hairdryer in the room and not serviced and cleaned throughout the 2 night stay.
The few staff, who seemed to be on permanent duty, were apologetic and helpful but clearly overrun.
Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in.
With regards to the super room, it seems that the only benefit is the presence of a coffee machine and a kit Kat. The room was boiling and there is no air con, so I had to open a window and be exposed to the noise of the car park behind and random people on the streets. The shower curtain was incorrectly installed and not appropriate for the type of shower unit in the room. There was also noisy guests until late in the night. When I highlighted these failing, I was patronised by the person responding and offered late check in and breakfast. So they overcharged me for the room and then offered something of no value to me which even they value at less than what they overcharged. Why would I stay there again when I will be overcharged again? Overall, disappointing but unsurprised.
