There are many beautiful little towns sprinkled throughout England and Dunster is one of the VERY BEST and The Luttrell Arms is the ideal place to stay. Dunster also contains an old market place with an easy walk to its impressive castle on the hill overlooking the town.

The Luttrell Arms exceeds expectations on every level. Great food, welcoming and friendly service, and gorgeous rooms. Great place to hunker down on a rainy day in a comfy armchair by the fireside! Can't wait to go back there!

We booked a table for four in order to participate in the Exmoor Food Festival. We enjoyed an excellent 3 course lunch for only £15.00 per head. Service was impeccable. If this was a 'lost leader' promotion to encourage us to re-visit it worked!! We will certainly be back.

Having stayed in this hotel many years ago, it was with memories of a superb hotel that surely couldn't be improved upon. Upon our recent visit we found a hotel that excelled in everything one could dream of in luxury. From entering the Luttrell Arms, to the ambience of every room, one (or in our case 2) couldn't wish for...

Yet another wonderful stay at the lovely Luttrell. It is difficult to prevent myself repeating from previous reviews. This time we stayed in Room 14 which was gorgeous, vast & beautifully appointed. Once again, we were able to have access to our room earlier than the offical check in time which is not expected but very much appreciated. Of course...

Value wise, this establishment is remarkable. However after the successful refurbishment there are still aspects to be tweaked. When we arrived [and we were not the only ones in the dining room] there was only ONE member of staff trying to deal with welcoming/seating and taking drinks orders. Not only is this very unfair on the member of staff, but...

Our recent stay at The Luttrell Arms was an absolute delight from the moment we arrived to the moment we departed. Having stayed in many hotels in Britain.. this has instantly become our favourite. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, welcoming and friendly especially towards our little dog who was welcomed with a dog biscuit and bowl of water...

We have been to the Luttrell Arms before but only in the summer when sat in the garden looking at the castle. This time we stayed with friends and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We had a stunning feature room with a four poster bed, fantastic high ceiling with original beams, a settee and two matching chairs, plus two high backed oak?...

This hotel stands in the lovely village of Dunster on Exmoor. There are 28 luxury en-suite bedrooms, check out the individual rooms when checking availability. The food is very good and the bar offers a good range of beers and wines. We will definitely be paying another visit to this privately owned hotel. .

We had a fantastic stay at this hotel. The staff were super friendly and when they say they are dog friendly they really do mean it! They provide dog beds in the room and at breakfast they lay up tables in the bar so that the dogs can come down for breakfast too. We were only planning to stay for...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Luttrell Arms is a 3 star, 28 room hotel. Set in the medieval village of Dunster with its many interesting buildings, under the shadow of the Castle and within the Exmoor National Park. The privately owned 14th century Luttrell Arms is surrounded by beautiful countryside making it the ideal destination for that weekend break or midweek getaway. Stroll around the village, walk the moor, or just sit by a log fire in a building where hospitality has been a way of life for hundreds of years. Heritage "If you could bottle the air in the bar at the Luttrell Arms and sell it you'd clean up" so wrote a local journalist. The smell of logs burning on the fire, a hint of hops from the pints of ale, add to this the smell of something aromatic being cooked in the kitchen, and the most essential element - the smell of history, it oozes out of the walls which have stood for 800 years. There are many outstanding architectural features, the medieval hall with its hammer beam roof (room 17) and twelve light window. History seeps out of the blackened frames, which had their glass rattled loose as Cromwell’s gunners laid siege to Dunster Castle from a defended strong point at the end of the garden. Cromwell’s Commander, Col. Robert Blake walked the corridors of the hotel, it was then called the Ship Inn and was used as his headquarters throughout the siege of the castle. Also of note is some very fine plasterwork on the ceiling of the lounge downstairs, and the plaster over mantle in room 12, showing Actaeon being devoured by hounds. The Arms of Luttrell that we use today carry us back to a Gentleman of 1261, the crest takes us only back to 1621, but the supporters are directly derived from one of the Barons who coerced King John into sealing Magna Carta. A more modern visitor is Hercule Poirot. In "The Cornish Mystery" he confronts the murderer in one of the hotel’s bedrooms. ... more   less
