Petruth Paddocks is a place where anyone can rock up and feel immediately at home. From the couple in their expensive new motor home to a bunch of young lads in a £29.99 tent from Aldi, from Mum, Dad and a couple of kids to a big group of family and friends - and everyone in between. A live-and-let-live place where there are refreshingly few rules, kids can be kids, campfires are encouraged, music and bad singing are not a problem and people feel free to wander round making new friends. That's what we mean by free range camping - and we love it.

Petruth Paddocks is celebrated by visitors for its welcoming and relaxed vibe, making it an ideal retreat for families and outdoor enthusiasts. The staff's attentiveness and the impeccably maintained facilities, especially the washrooms, receive high marks from guests. While some find certain extras costly, many believe the campsite provides excellent value.
The spacious, well-kept accommodations, complete with robust shower pressure, add to the comfort of the stay. Its prime location near Cheddar village and natural wonders only enhances its appeal.

Detailed Reviews
Property's Favourite Review
I always spend ages searching for campsites and this year was no exception. We wanted a site that was family friendly, EHU and campfires, plus visitors welcome as we had friends who weren't camping but were holidaying with us. Somehow I decided that Cheddar and the Gorge were where we were going to head this year and Petruth Paddocks popped up in my searches. I was impressed by such a comprehensive website, though a little dubious, it seemed like such a large site, would it really deliver on all of its promises? Simple answer... YES!
We rarely go back to a campsite twice, not because we don't like them, but there is so many other places to explore, however, this will be one that we will be returning to and here is why...
1. Friendly! All the staff on site I spoke to were lovely and friendly, especially with our two children. We actually met Jules on our arrival (yes, campsite owner on site, not just a manager!!) and he was so welcoming, grabbing his bike and leading us to our pitch (chill out 2!) I also spoke to him as he was doing the glamourous job of sorting all the bins out on the day we left! Abby was also especially lovely to the kids on Friday evening when we popped into Reception/shop to grab a drink before our final campfire! The website also mentioned Jules driving the kids around the site, I thought to myself 'that'll never happen'.... well I was wrong! On Tuesday night we suddenly hear lots of squealing and round the corner comes Jules driving the logs around for campfires with two kids in the back! He stops outside our tents and asks if ours want a ride and off they went for two rather loud trips around the field! They loved it and what a fab experience for them!
2. Space! We always need to take two cars camping these days, one for the stuff and one for the kids and are used to having to park one of the cars in the visitors parking, not so here, we were able to park all 4 of the cars in our party opposite our tents! Such a handy spot and no additional charges for an extra car! We have a fairly large tent and it sat nicely in our pitch and we were able to put our event tent up between ours and our family members pitch - creating a really great space. We decided to put the campfire opposite the pitch too, which saved from having the tents get too smoky! When Jules dropped us at our pitch I asked about the cars and he said not to worry and where to pop them if he needed the space (which they didn't).
3. Shower and Toilets! Wow! This really did deliver as per the website! As always I was a little dubious about campsite toilets, but these were some of the best we have ever been in! of course when it was wet the floors did get dirty, but the team would come around twice a day to clean and some of the units would then remain closed (which worked well as we never had to wait for a toilet or a shower!) I loved the fact that the corner toilets were all set up for baby changing and most had a step for the little ones to be able to reach the sink or toilet. The corner showers were also the biggest for family showering - especially handy when you have 2 children!! Of course during the busiest showering times the water wasn't as hot or had as much pressure, but if you avoid those times then it was just like showering at home! TOP TIP -take some crocs/flip flops that you can wear in the shower - not for the whole time, so you can turn the shower on and then give the floor a clean with the squidger (what my children called the floor cleaner) this means when you finish your shower the floor is nice and clean for you.
4. Fire and Food! We love a campfire and the ease of getting one for the week was a dream! We got ours on the first night and kept it for the week - for £2.50 per night who wouldn't. Logs for £7 = about what you pay everywhere else and I have no idea about the kindling cost as I wasn't really paying attention! It was great watching the team drive around each evening with fire pits and logs for everyone! What a great way of doing it.
We only used the morning coffee and breakfast truck on our last day, handy when packing away! Good coffee and great bacon and sausage baps on offer. Sadly we didn't get food on the Saturday we arrived as there was a bit of a wait, but clearly a very popular spot and a great addition to the site.
5. Pot wash, Bins and EHU! The pot wash area was great and I sent the Husband round to do this each time (as per the signage of course!) I went around just the once and what a great area, plenty of sinks, slate sides to put the wet stuff on and washing up bowls so you can wash up in! Apparently one time my husband was washing up they came around with more bowls as they had gone missing! Some people might be put off by having to sort your rubbish, but we did this from the beginning and between the two families had it well organised! I had brought an old cardboard box for the paper/carboard rubbish, we had a green plastic tub for the plastic and cans, our glass recycling bag and a spare food waste bin and compostable food waste bags! This was easy and for us a bit like how we sort our rubbish at home and really didn't matter. I didn't mind having to pay for the EHU, we started with £3 automatically on the meter and we decided to add £10 to see how long it would last us.... All week!! We had about £1 left at the end, which we could have claimed back but didn't bother - our family members had put on £20 and had £8 left at the end which they did claim back! £13 for a week of EHU is pretty decent, especially as some site will charge you £40 a week for EHU! A great system!
6. Price. £311 for a family of 4 on an EHU pitch was very good.
7. Locality! The local area was fabulous to explore a 15 minute walk (for me) into the village and to the bottom of the gorge was great. The gorge and caves were just beautiful! A trip to the Cheddar Ales Brewery was also achieved and I enjoyed being able to have a gluten free beer from a tap! Not just a bottle! Wells was a short distance away and rather beautiful! We visited the National Trust beach at Brean Down - if it is windy and sunny, don't be fooled as we all got sunburnt! What a beautiful spot, free to park for NT members and only £6 all day otherwise, a bargain!
For a large site it never felt too busy or too noisy! This is definitely a site we will go back to! Thank you!

We stayed here as we had bought a new tent and wanted just a short session to try it out. The campsite is in cheddar and we are from Bristol so not too far a trip for a short weekend. The campsite is easy to find and as long as you don’t follow your friends sat nav!
Check in was very easy and you get shown to what field you are in. It is all pretty flat so nice and easy to pitch tents etc. All the staff are very polite and friendly. The toilets and showers are consistently being cleaned given the times we are in at the moment this was brilliant to see. There is a coffee shack on site and they make clay fired pizzas on a Fri and Sat night.
The cost for camping and logs for fire etc over the two nights is about average.
There are a couple of things I would say they could change to make the campsite better. They need to lay a proper road or path for cars around the site. It’s like a mud bath in the fields with all the cars coming and going.
They also use old washing machine drums for fire baskets whilst this is a great idea they need bigger air holes in them as the lack of oxygen makes the logs smoke more than flame. A few more sinks to wash dishes there are only 3 sinks and for a campsite the size of Petruth a couple more would be great.
Other than these minor things we had a great weekend and would definitely go back for a longer stay next time.

Really glad that you enjoyed your stay with us once you found us! Thank you also for your constructive feedback. Yesterday we brought in a machine to stone the entrances (it is just those that are muddy) and have now fixed that issue :) We are going to experiment with the burners to assess if the issue lies there and if so will fix that too. Next year we are installing an 8-bay pot wash area - we'd intended to have this ready in April but it was a casualty of no income for 3 months! We look forward to welcoming you back and watching the men wash-up without having to queue! Go well Jules and the team

We arrived after a couple of days of torrential rain so some of the grass was understandably muddy. However, the staff directed us to the "lively" field and basically let us choose where to pitch.
Mud dried up in a day or so and not a big problem - its a field in the countryside after all!
Showers and loos were new and superb - hot water and cleaned constantly - could get busy at the obvious times but that wasn't an issue.
Staff were superb and friendly, really enjoyed the fire pits and wood delivered nightly. For anyone complaining at paying £6 for a bag of logs, just have a word with yourself! It was cheap as getting logs anywhere else and they were delivered to you!
Pretty much everyone shut off their music at 11pm as required and the place was pretty quiet thereafter even though it was pretty full.
The pitches (grass only) are not defined so you can take all the space you want so that all of your group can pitch together.
Superb and highly recommended.

Don’t be fooled by the jolly website and the fact there aren’t any pictures. This is for a reason. The facilities are none existent and we contemplated leaving after the first night. This is going to be a positive and negative review so you can make your own mind up. I have been camping for 20 plus years and also do festivals and this is the worst site I’ve been on.
Positive:
1. The member of staff we came into contact with when checking in was very pleasant and helpful telling us all we needed to know.
2. It is 10 to 15 minutes walk to Cheddar and the Gorge from the site.
Negatives
1. First impression when arriving were a pink sign painted on a brick sign post telling you which road to take and on entrance reception is a white plastic marquee with wood and plastic for the new covid measure.
2. You are shown to a pitch which considering it is less people because of Covid it was very busy and we had our neighbour park his car right in front of the entrance to ours because of how many people are packed in.
3. There are 3 large fields that share the following facilities:
QUEUE for dishwashing as there are only 4 sinks which you share a draining board with someone else under a plastic grubby plastic canopy.
QUEUE for the old portacabin toilets or alternatively queue for the newish upgraded portacabin toilets all outside so if it rains your going to get wet while you queue.
QUEUE for the 3 old showers which are grubby and when I used it the shower head was covered in lime scale and the tray filled up and flooded so soon as I switched the shower on or alternatively queue for a while for the newish upgraded portacabin showers does matter if it rains as your going to get wet. Didn’t help when I saw a man come out of the shower cubicle with his dog. The things you see. Also be aware of the doors as they spring back and could take a small child out.
4. Having a lovely wake up call at 5 am from the industrial unit behind the site with either a lorry making a delivery or staff rolling up the shutters at first I thought it was thunder but then heard the pep of the fork lift truck.
5. Staff come around and sell logs to burn for a campfire on an evening which is a nice touch but unfortunately as most people on the site buy it, you and your stuff will stink of smoke the next day and then you queue for a shower.
Having paid for high season prices I don’t expect luxury but decent clean showers and toilets which they aren’t. I’m an experienced camper and attended many festivals and had better facilities and cleaner at festivals.
Perhaps the owner should stay for a few nights on the weekend to get a customer perspective. I’m all for lay back, chill atmosphere but would like the basics.
Also it would ideal to have some hand sanitizer by the toilets as these are only by the water taps and dishwashing. You wash your hands to then have to touch a lock and handle that hundreds of other people have touched not great in the current situation of covid.

Hi folks As you may have surmised, this review is posted by a gentleman with whom we have had an ongoing disagreement with prior to arrival. I really should have trusted my gut instinct and cancelled his booking but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt, hope that I had judged him wrongly, assume he was simply having a stressful time and needed a restful break here. I’ll let others refute his claims rather than spending time responding and I’m happy for you to be the judge and either come stay or choose to find somewhere else. Either way I wish you the break you deserve and him a happier life than he clearly has at this time. Jules

We stayed a long weekend at the campsite just after lockdown.
Jules and his team were more than helpful and very friendly. We felt safe and looked after on the site.
The site itself is positioned within easy walking distance from Cheddar, the cheddar gorge and the local reservoir. We walked to all three with a two and three year old. In fact we didn't drive the van once from arrival until we left 3 days later.
Facilities have obviously recently been updated to meet new covid-19 rules with very clean individual shower and toilet blocks. These are kept spotless by a dedicated team of cleaners who seemed to work round the clock!
The ice cream seller and his bike and the fire pit and logs trailer coming round are a welcome sight and make having a campfire easy with no mess to take home.
There is a separate camping area for families and individuals so noise later on is kept to a minimum.
Would wholeheartedly recommend this site to families with young kids.

We received a great welcome when we arrived here. Jules and his team checked every now and agian to check everyone was OK.
here is an amazing uninterrupted almost 180 degree view of the Mendip Hills. Stunning.
The toilets and showers are brand new and worked well. The cleaning team worked relentlessly, constantly cleaning them as well as the water taps around the field.
There were the ubiquitous dos and don't signs but all were written in a friendly matter with cartoons.
There is the Cheddar Ales Tap Rooms just 600 yards from the reception area, serving some 13 or so different ales served in 1/3 pint glasses so you can try different ales.
Cheddar town centre is only few minutes walk from site were there are a number of bubs, restaurants and tea rooms not to mention the famous Cheddar Caves though these were closed when we visited due to Covid 19.

We stayed at Petruth Paddocks for 4 nights at the end of July 2020. We had been desperate to get away from London after months of lockdown and we couldn’t have chosen a better place to be. We arrived on a Monday with one other family as groups no larger than 2 families are currently allowed. Check in was fast and efficient and we were guided to a quiet corner of the site. We had plenty of space between us and any other guests and loads of space for the kids to play nearby.
The first visit to the toilet facilities is always undertaken with trepidation when visiting a site for the first time but I was most pleasantly surprised and delighted to find the best block of toilets and showers I’ve come across whilst camping. They we’re plentiful, spacious and constantly being cleaned. No queues early in the week but they did get busier towards the weekend but still manageable.
The site was in a fantastic setting, beautiful views and an easy walk to the village for supermarket supplies and the odd pub lunch!!
All the staff we’re amazing, helpful, polite and smiley (even when cleaning the loos)!
Due to COVID 19 there were a couple of services they couldn’t offer like phone charging and freezing ice blocks but this really wasn’t a bit problem and didn’t affect our enjoyment at all.
Well done and thank you to all the staff at Petruth Paddocks. We will definitely return another year.

On arrival we was greeted with a smile from the owner, he explained the area well and things to do. The toilets and showers were always being cleaned and hand sanitiser was provided everywhere. Fire pits were provided for a small fee and fire wood brought round every night again for a small fee. Site was well spaced and good location can’t wait to visit again thanks so much for a lovely stay. Ps great view for sunset over the campsite!

I stayed here with my 11 year son for 3 nights we felt very safe. The staff are all very friendly nothing is to much trouble. Toilets and showers are all new and very very clean, there is a small washing up facility with constant hot water. It is a short safe walk into cheddar and about 30 min drive to the beach. The views are stunning, we cannot wait to go back.

A really great place to stay!
On entry we were escorted through the fields following the golf cart and shown options of pitching spots to help with distancing of at least 8 meters between tents and water points in each field were easy to access with hand cleaning soap attached too. Different fields for children and families and quieter ones for those who prefer a quieter experience.
The facilities were amazingly well kept and Sparkly clean every time we used them. Hot water showers were wonderful and spacious. Due to covid, facilities were on a rotation with cleaning always in place and washing up sinks have separations between them it felt really safe and thought out it was great!
On site a quad bike does the rounds to each tent each night for renting fire pits, buying wood, kindling, grills for open fire cooking and marshmallows! An ice cream freezer attached to the front of a bike even visited the fields what a treat!
All the staff were very friendly and provided a warm welcome and were on hand for any queries and recommendations of where to visit throughout our stay!
A really great place, great location for visiting spots such as cheddar gorge, Wookey hole and lots of other places! I intend to be back and recommend to anyone of any age and group size!
Thank you for an amazing summer camping trip
