Abbey Hotel Bath is an experiential hotel for people seeking true Bathonian encounters – a place for discerned travellers, admirers of British Quintessentialism and in-the-know locals alike. At the heart of Bath and inspired by the city’s most celebrated icons, it blends the new with the old, the refined with the comfortable and the local with the worldly. The art, the stories, the experiences have all been purposefully directed to showcase old and new Bathonian talent. Guests are immersed in rich history, architectural beauty, regional artistry and craftsmanship in this art-driven 80-bedroom hotel. Built in 1739, the building composed part of John Wood’s vision for Bath. Now in its XXI act, it has once again risen to play a role in Bath’s rich narrative, to serve as a gathering place for the city’s most interesting voices – makers and thinkers that inspirit Bath – and a place for visitors and locals to unwind.

The Abbey Hotel Bath garners applause for its prime location in the heart of Bath, making it a favorite for guests eager to explore the city. However, some guests have called out the hotel for rooms that don't live up to the promotional images, describing them as cramped and not well-maintained. While the service and amenities have their champions for attentiveness and charm, there are also reports of lackluster experiences and subpar breakfast offerings. The atmosphere blends historical allure with modern touches, though it's not without its critiques regarding room size and style. Concerning value, several travelers feel the cost of their stay doesn't align with the quality received.

Part of the Marriott hotels, this is a beautifully restored building, where we spent a night in a well appointed room. The staff was helpful, very friendly and accommodating to our needs. Only issue I had was being under the front entrance, so at times during the day it was a little noisy in the room, so we went wandering and the issue was solved. I will stay here again.

We loved everything about this hotel. When we arrived the lovely lady on reception could’ve find our booking (booked via secret escapes) but it wasn’t a problem. We were happy to sit in the lovely bar and have a drink, and were then given a free drink voucher which was a lovely bonus and gesture. Our booking was soon found and we were so happy with our room. Lovey view onto a courtyard area. We had a premium room and the decor was lovely, bed super comfy and bathroom was beautiful. The toiletries in the room were really good quality and smelt gorgeous (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand wash and hand cream). All super clean. Was also really impressed with the tea and quality selection and the green and blacks chocolate in the room was a lovely touch. Very quiet and peaceful which meant a good nights sleep. The bar area was really quirky with lots of lovey artworks and drinks lovely too.
We were super impressed with the breakfast, lovely clean dining area, really good continental selection with pastries, fruits, cereals and juices. Fresh coffee was lovely and the hot food was cooked to order. Vegan brekkie and full English were both lovely and really fresh. Smashed avocado and poached eggs on toast another morning also really good.
The location of the hotel is fantastic, literally within minutes walk of all the main attractions in Bath, the bridge, Abbey and Roman baths all so close. We loved that we could pop back to the hotel really easily without going out of our way to change or just have a chill in between activities. Lots of really lovely restaurants and pubs very close by.
All of you staff in the hotel are absolutely fantastic, can not fault any of them. From check in, to the lovely gentleman on the bar on the first day who recommended things to do and where to eat, the ladies at breakfast who were so friendly and attentive. The cleaning staff left our room spotless every day. On our last night there was a gentleman in the bar who was quite rude and belittling to the barman, telling him how to make drinks and being a little condescending. The barman handled it graciously and we found him to be very efficient and friendly. I left a scarf in the bar one night and it was handed back to me the next night so thank you very much. Please be kind to all the staff as they work so hard and are so good at their jobs.
We will definitely be back to the Abbey hotel and 100% recommend it to friends and family.
Thank you for a great stay.

I booked 3 rooms (Cinematography) and there were problems with all of them. For the twin room the bathroom was grubby with a large amount of hair in the shower. It was so bad we had to get housekeeping to clean it. Both of the king rooms had bulbs missing and both had a double size thin quilt on a king bed. Fortunately both were single use but for 2 people one would have been without a quilt. The rooms were all dusty and could do with an overhaul, there was no water in any of the rooms. We were advised to book a slot for breakfast and even in doing so all 4 of our breakfast orders were wrong, in addition to the table behind us and that to our right! Even the poached eggs on sourdough - the sourdough toast was wet where the (firm) eggs had not been drained. When we checked in we were told that we had a complimentary drink - when we went to claim this we were told it is one drink for each double room - so if you are sharing your room you will need a couple of straws!! This hotel badly needs a present manager and a training programme for the staff. I have stayed in a great many Mariott hotels both in UK and abroad and this hotel is far short of their normal standards. The two positives to this hotel are the location - it is very central and
the service I had prior to arrival was the normal high standard just a pity that the Hotel didn't deliver on so many levels upon arrival.

Dear Amanda, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us, we would like to sincerely apologise that your experience did not meet your expectations. We take all comments very seriously, and we are disappointed to hear that we fell short during your stay. Cleanliness is the number one priority for us, your comments about the bathroom and housekeeping in general will be immediately addressed to ensure this does not happen again. I am disappointed to hear your breakfast was not as expected and there was some confusion surrounding your welcome drinks, further training is being carried out with staff members throughout all departments to ensure the same experience does not repeat moving forward. We truly appreciate your feedback as it helps us to improve our hospitality, we hope you’ll give us another chance to provide you with the quality experience we strive for. Sincerely, Megan Ricards

I chose The Abbey Hotel as I am a member of the Marriott Bonvoy programme and it is perfect for those unencumbered by a car and who want a central location in the heart of Bath. So I have stayed before, a few times, and stays have been pleasant.
The staff are very pleasant with a warm welcome and offer to assist with luggage. I was upgraded on arrival to a lovely large newly decorated room with huge bathroom (no Bath though, which I found odd given the space). Despite being new, the shower cubicle already dribbles water out on to the wooden floor at the corners and the soap rack wont stay level as the toiletries provided are too heavy resulting in them falling off.
The toiletry range of soaps and shampoos are lovely and available for purchase at reception.
I enjoyed the tea and coffee making facilities and complementary cans of water.
I could not get the bedroom to heat up despite following instructions on the writing desk so it was a little chilly but the stay was ultimately spoiled by the noise from outside. Room 511 is right over the street and between midnight and 0230 the drunken antics and shouting of city residents was unbearable. It is always a hazzard when staying in a centrally located hotel but Bath has a fair amount of hotels to choose from so I’d suggest either asking for a room at the back of the house(s) or choose somewhere else.
At breakfast I chose the pancakes which were awful; uncooked and stodgy. Nothing light and fluffy like you’d get in the USA. Despite several staff walking by several times, nobody checked if I was okay even though it was clear the pancakes had only one mouthfull taken out, so the level of service is not very attentive. Coffee comes from insulated large dispensers for self service and it wasn’t really hot.
I would stay again for my Marriott Bonvoy points but not if I were bringing a guest to impress or on a special occasion

I really wanted to like the place, the brand and photos seemed good and we decided to book despite a lot of negative reviews. Firstly we decided to book a more premium room to avoid ending up in one of the dreaded basement rooms. Success! We had a room with a window, however the catch is it's in another building with no elevator so we need to carry our luggage up to the 4th floor. No problemo! I'm 35 and trying to lose a little weight.... might be a problem if your a little old lady though.

Ah nice new quality room, worth the climb up the stairs. Walk into the bathroom, piss all down the outside of the bowl. Uch a vie!!! (Welsh for gross). Not really what you need after spending £230 for a room.

All be as it may let's crack on with the holiday hey. Surely the Al la carte breakfast will be delicious the next morning. You do have to book you know! We chose 09:30 and arrived a little early with hungry and excited bellies! 😊 To call breakfast dysfunctional would be an insult to the dysfunctional. No sugar with coffee, no teaspoon in sight, ah never mind, i go scavenge what i can, a tablespoon will do. Oh but what about breakfast. Its 10:15 already and no breakfast in sight. Not for humans anyway. The seagulls in the outdoor dining area seem to be happy though. The staff don't clear up the vacant tables, maybe hotel policy to let the seagulls recycle the waste? (Brilliant photo opportunity for some Asian tourists passing by). In any case our lovely but very vacant looking waitresses just look on into the emptiness of time... some lovely customers take it upon themselves to clear up, probably the seagulls flying all around them with their germs and waste gets a little too much. Half the guests seemed to have even less patience than us and just gave up and left......Later that same morning: Breakfast finally arrived! Yay! No cutlery though... 😞 we prowl the restaraunt like predators searching for the highly sought after cutlery, we fail miserably. I chase the waitress again.

All being said apart from the obvious lack of management and customer service the location is indeed very central, but seems to be a main pickup point for tourist buses, so not actually a great location for most of the day.

Do yourself a favour and book a Premier Inn, at least you know what your getting a clean bathroom, no seagulls tapping on your window. You can even help yourself to a breakfast immediately without having to wait over 50 minutes getting dive bombed by seagulls for the privilege.

This hotel was a disappointment. It is in a great location in Bath, centrally located near the Abbey. It is an easy walk from the train station and the tour buses pick up right outside the front door. Unfortunately, that is about the only thing we liked about it. We stayed in a Cinematography King room. The room was very small and there was almost no storage. I had to climb over the small chair at the foot of the bed to get to the small closet. The bathroom had no surfaces at all to place any toiletries. There was not even a place to hang a hand towel- I ended up draping it over the mirror. The towel warming rack was high on the wall above the toilet and I could not reach it without a step stool. So, it was a funky little room in an old building. I would have still liked it but the thing that made it unlikeable was the attitude of the staff. The entire staff was aloof and disengaged. Any question we asked at the front desk was met with a short, curt answer. Each night that we tried to go to the hotel bar for a drink, we had to go to the desk to ask them to send someone in to tend the bar. There were no friendly smiles or greetings. It was so different from our experiences at other hotels on this trip. I would not recommend this hotel if staying in Bath.

We stayed at the Abbey Hotel for two nights, which was two nights too many for us. We are Marriott brand folks, so we’ve stayed at hundreds of properties throughout the years and this was one of the most disappointing stays we’ve had in awhile. The hotel is in a good location but beyond that, the pictures online do not match the vibe of the hotel once inside.

The room was smaller than pictured and the bathroom was run down (rust, dirty baseboards, shower did not drain properly). The hotel also requires guests to pick a time for breakfast which isn’t really ideal on holiday when you don’t know exactly what time you’ll wake up. It was also almost completely empty at our designated time, so that was annoying. The area where the food is served is quite depressing and our prepared omelettes had no taste. Customer service was lacking at the hotel as well - you have to pay to rent an umbrella (which the machine was broken so no luck), I called for a new hair dryer and it never was sent up, and most annoying of all is that my husband had arranged for Champaign and strawberries to be sent to the room which were never received. On checkout, the charge was on the room and when he notified the front desk we never received them they said “no worries, I’ll take it off”, completely ignoring the fact that it was upsetting we didn’t receive them. The front desk said they would give us points to make up for the mishap once my husband said we were very disappointed, but more than the 2 weeks they stated later and we never received them.

Overall there were many things that made hotel not live up the Tribute brand. I wouldn’t recommend the hotel nor stay here again. There are better options to enjoy your stay in Bath.

Dear Kendall_ashlee, Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent stay at the Abbey Hotel in Bath. We genuinely appreciate your insights, as it helps us identify areas for improvement and enhance our guests' experiences. I'm truly sorry to hear that your stay fell short of your expectations, especially for seasoned Marriott guests like yourselves. We apologize for any inconveniences you experienced during your stay, and I'd like to address some of the concerns you raised: 1. Room Condition: We understand that our small hotel offers a unique experience where each room is individually designed, and as such, not all rooms look the same. However, please be assured that the amenities and the size of the room are consistent across each category. We will review the room descriptions and images on our website to ensure they accurately reflect the uniqueness of our accommodations. 2. Breakfast Booking System: We appreciate your feedback on the breakfast booking system. While many of our guests appreciate it for creating a more peaceful breakfast atmosphere, we also understand that it may not suit everyone's schedule. We won't be able to control the exact time our guests arrive for breakfast, as some may be early or late for their reserved time. We will review the system to make it more accommodating to different schedules. 3. Food Quality: I'm disappointed to hear that you found the breakfast area unappealing, and the omelette tasteless. We will address this with our chefs and F&B manager to improve the quality of our breakfast offerings. 4. Customer Service: It's concerning to learn about the issues with the umbrella rental, unfulfilled requests, and the missing amenity. We will ensure that our staff undergo retraining to provide a higher level of service and to prevent such occurrences in the future. 5. Points Promise: I apologize for the delay in receiving the promised points. We'll investigate this matter and ensure that the points are credited to your account promptly. Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we will take immediate steps to address these concerns and improve our services. We genuinely appreciate your candid remarks, and we hope you would consider giving us another chance to provide you with a more enjoyable experience in the future. Thank you for choosing the Abbey Hotel, and we look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back and make amends for your recent experience. Sincerely, Ruby Brindez Front Office Manager ruby.brindez@abbeyhotelbath.co.uk

The location of the hotel is very good being in easy walking distance of a plethora of bars, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions. We were upgraded when checking in although we found the room to be a little tired and the furniture very basic. We had to ask for the complimentary water to be replaced for our second night even though the room had been serviced.
Breakfast was just ok although the full English had a tiny tomato and just one mushroom! The staff generally did not seem very happy although there were a couple of exceptions including the barman and a young waiter on our second breakfast who was very engaging, efficient and polite.
Overall, not overly impressed with the room, quality of breakfast or the general ambience given the price charged so will not be staying here again as there are plenty of alternatives in the city.

Stayed two nights at this property while on a Back Roads Tour. There is nothing horribly wrong with it but there is nothing that pleases. Its biggest positive is the fabulous location near the Abbey and the Roman Baths.

We reported to staff that housekeeping had overlooked a used washcloth in the shower but it was never addressed. The body wash ran out. The sink didn't drain and, although reported to staff, it was never fixed. The heated towel bar is apparently on a timer but worked only for short random periods, so we were unable to properly dry our handwashing or our bathing suits, which is an issue when a thermal spa is a local attraction.

The staff in the dining room is not especially attentive. There was no cinnamon for my porridge, although it's on the menu. The group dinner was merely mediocre. No sauce on the sticky toffee pudding!!

Our basement room was fine but very hot and there was no way to control the temperature.

I can't say anyone should choose this hotel with all the options available.

I am giving this a 3 star because the staff were very lovely given the situation but the hotel itself is very dated and there were issues with the rooms.

We booked two rooms here for a short weekend stay and upon arrival as Marriott members were were upgraded. Only one of the rooms we were upgraded to did not have heat and the other was in the basement which walks through the restaurant, down/upstairs and then it is near the fire exit of the hotel. Dark and dingy is where this upgraded room was located with no access to a lift. When I inquired about getting the room I booked rather than the upgrade I was informed that there were none available because they were oversold. I then was even willing to go down another category to have a room that was not in the basement only to be informed that the rooms available had no working heat.

After walking around the city for a few hours we were able to find another hotel we could stay at that was a fit for us. The staff were very kind and understanding with how the rooms we were given were not acceptable and refunded us our full stay on the spot. The staff were truly lovely.

If the hotel were to get a refurbish I might be willing to try it again as the location is perfect, however, even for a short stay what was offered was just not a fit for us.
