....so you're not expecting luxury. The room we were given (14) was big, with a big bathroom too. Really nice to have a big, deep bath and there was plenty of hot water. But it was dated with some quite odd furniture, no drawers at all. The TV was very small indeed and the remote had the batteries held in with copious amounts of sellotape because the back was missing. Not something we'd ever complain about because we got the tv working, but really this is just cheap and shoddy. Plenty of coffee etc provided and there was a bag left outside our door the next morning with refills. Very saddening to see that they're still using single use plastic (throwaway plastic cups in the bathroom). There's 55 stairs to this room and no lift. The last stretch is steep. This wasn't a problem for us, but I imagine some people would really struggle. The lights on the stairs are on a timer so we were plunged into darkness as we were trying to open the door to the room. Again, we were fine, but some would find this difficult. The room is at the front and, as it's on a very busy road, one of the main roads in, there's constant traffic noise. This goes on throughout the night too. There's roadworks at the minute, adding to the noise, They start early. There's also noise from people coming past on their way back from their nights out and not minding who knows it. My husband slept like a baby, but I got no sleep at all the first night so it depends on your tolerance. This isn't something the hotel has any control over, just something to bear in mind depending on how easily you can sleep. However, the proximity to the centre is a selling point as it's a very short walk into the main centre of York. Every member of staff we encountered was pleasant and friendly - they've been here from between 2 to 25 years, so the management are doing something right. The breakfast staff in particular were very good. The breakfast is pretty good. It's served from 7.30am to 10am and there's a good number of tables. The room is large but quite dark. There's a central buffet with a good range - fruits, yogurts, cheeses and ham, cereals and pastries etc. There's a good selection of cooked food too, with vegetarian options such as beans on toast, boiled eggs with soldiers etc. The Better Half had bacon sandwiches both days - they looked excellent and I'm advised they were exactly as a bacon sandwich should be - white bread and generous amounts of really nicely cooked back bacon. The hotel has a hygiene rating of 5. The car park is very welcome. It's not free, it's included in the price of your stay. It's secure - gated with CCTV. Be aware however, that there aren't enough spaces to cover every room and this is made worse by selfish parking - people who feel it's ok to park over two spaces. We arrived at approx 11am and got the last space, but it was tight, At least 4 cars near us were blocked in because two cars were parked across their back ends, making it impossible for them to reverse out. I don't know what happens in these situations if you want to leave but are blocked in or if you can't park but parking is included in your room charge. However, it's great just to even get parking this close to the centre and to have the security too. They are fine with you parking even if you arrive early and your room isn't ready, and you can also leave it there for an extra two hours after checking out time, which is good of them. It cost us £258 for two nights so it isn't cheap. We've stayed in better accommodation in York for less than this. We both felt it was a bit over priced. However, the pros outweighed the cons.

A lovely, clean, well situated hotel. First things first, it has to be said that the staff here are some of the friendliest, helpful and polite we have come across. Very nice people and an asset to The Minster. Secondly the rooms we had ( 2 rooms ) in our party were excellent, well fitted and spacious ( rooms 5 and 6 ). Great standard of cleanliness and nice and quiet also. Thirdly the brekkies were delicious. As much of a choice as you can think of is served up, from fruit to toasts, full English to cold meats and cheeses ( continental style ) Fourthly the location is excellent with a 5 minute walk to the city and Minster. Fifthly ( not sure if that is a word ha ha ) and the most importantly, it has a bar ! Very useful when you are meeting up with your fellow travellers. Sixthly......an on site car park is so handy and at only £5 per night is great value. A great stay was had here, we would definitely go back. Thanks to all of the staff particularly Stewart and the lovely receptionist I think was called Michelle.

Booked into the Minster Hotel at the last minute as our house was being reburbished and were left with no hot water. The reception staff on booking and checking in were really pleasant and helpful. The room was spacious and clean and the bed was super comfortable. The breakfast was included (which seems to be rare these days) and we found it to be excellent. The range of food was huge with continental and juices available as well as a delicious full english with many options. One of the best hotel breakfasts we've had. All the waiting staff at breakfast were very attentive and helpful. Excellent hotel and value for money.

We visit York several times a year but this was our first visit to The Minster Hotel. We were not disappointed. We received a warm friendly welcome which continued throughout our stay. All the staff were lovely and professional and helpful. Our room was big and bright, spotlessly clean with a huge comfy bed and nice and quiet. A lovely big bathroom with a shower and a bath and large fluffy towels. Hand sanitiser was available in all public areas and dining room where social distancing was followed. Breakfast was very good and a great selection on the buffet table before indulging in a cooked breakfast. Not just a full English but a variety of different things. All presented freshly cooked and very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this hotel when visiting York, friendly and family run, much better than big chain hotels. We have already booked our visits for next year and will be there again in December, something to look forward to.
