We stayed at the Whitehorse & Griffin for one night and we had an excellent time. It's in a perfect location in the heart of Whitby and is in close proximity to all of the key sites. The room we had was called Helga Maria, and it was full of old world charm, history, and character. This particular room is...

We Had a meal only. The atmosphere is good, candles and fire lit, tables nicely set and water provided as you would expect. As a couple we paid £62 for a starter, main and a bottle of wine, the budget option. The food was well presented, when you examined it closely tho' the quantities were very small. I had a...

What a fabulous 1681 pub. We were in Wakeful which was excellent however I can see that in busy season it might have noise from the road below. The meals in the pub were fabulous on both nights,. Service was friendly.

Visited last weekend for 1 night, nice welcome & shown to our room which we found to very clean & tidy with tea / coffee facilities, normal size double bed but comfy, bathroom very small & compact. The view was the worst ive ever experienced , just a roof with hardly any light coming in, you could hear the gulls...

I am staying at the White Horse and Griffin...2 nights down one to go. I'm loving every minute. The hotel staff are extremely friendly and efficient. My room is charming and very clean. I suffer with a bad back so I'm always apprehensive about hotel beds but this one is so comfy I want to take it home with me!...

On a week break to Whitby I called in this pub twice. The first time I got to the bar I was asked if was with "the party". When I said no I was told I had to leave as it was a private party even though no signs were up. The next time the bar was completely unmanned and...

I stayed for 2 nights in the White Horse and Griffin in Whitby. The room was light and airy and the bed was comfortable. The breakfast was excellent. The main reason for staying here is its location right in the centre of old Whitby. It's not the cheapest place to stay but I thought it was well worth it and...

Booked to stay in the room 'the wakeful king'. Well it lived up to it's name! The period windows might as well been open to hear the revellers still walking, talking and laughing along the cobbled street below until 3.30 am. The mattress was hard. The bath had a line of scum all round it and had to be cleaned...

It is worth reading the average ratings for this hotel as they about sum up the mixed bag you will get. On the plus side, the hotel is in a fantastic location, the views are lovely, the BAR staff are great, the building is quirky and there is free wifi. However, there is a lack of attention on the basics....

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
