Our second visit to White Horse and Griffin. Everything was lovely again. The staff are so friendly, can't do enough to make your stay enjoyable. The food again was amazing, I had the lamb and it was gorgeous. Our room, the Provider, was comfy, clean with a fab shower. It's a very welcoming place to stay with a lovely atmosphere.

We have been visiting Whitby for many years and have always just walked past this pub without giving it a second thought. What a mistake that was! It's one of the oldest pubs in Whitby built in 1681 as a coaching house. It has a small cosy bar but opens into a wonderful dining area downstairs and another fabulous dining...

My boyfriend and I visited here for dinner. The food was amazing, very reasonably priced, staff were pleasant and the atmosphere was cosy. We ordered from the specials board and it was delicious. We were pleasantly surprised with the bill, very reasonable in my opinion as it included alcohol too. Would recommend.

Regular to Whitby and have eaten here several times over the years, always remember it as the batter on the fish and chips is so nice and light. Staff are excellent, attentive but not too much and very friendly. Food is fresh and very well prepared, chips are real (not frozen) hand cut you can taste it. The building is...

Well we've just arrived home from a lovely short break in Whitby. We have previously been very impressed when we've dined at the White Horse and Griffin but never stayed, so thought we'd give it a try. We have not been disappointed at all. As always, the staff are a real credit to the place, nothing is too much trouble....

5* food, 5* staff, 5* setting and atmosphere. This place is an absolute gem. I would have stayed there all day if I could. The staff were first class, as was the food. Try the wonderful G@T...plenty to choose from. It is a must for anyone wanting to visit somewhere that is just that little bit different. Love, love, love...

This meal was my birthday treat from my husband during a short break in Whitby. On a frosty January evening, the log fire and cosy beamed room was wonderfully welcoming. Our meals were excellent; generous portions and one of the best steaks I've ever had - tasty and exceptionally tender. A choice of delicious and interesting deserts provided the perfect...

Internet doesn't work upper floors. Service wonderful, breakfast great, dogs welcome (loved that even though we didn't have ours with us). Tub as big as a lake! Best fish & chips in the whole UK to be found in this village. So picturesque I want to move here!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
