This place wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. The room was kind of dingy, and not in the cool historical way we were expecting. We were at the front of the building, and the front door had a bell that would ring every time someone opened the door. You could also hear the people walking around downstairs (we were...

Really quirky place - can be a bit crowded, particularly the restaurant which on Saturday night was too crowded and noisy which spoiled the enjoyment of what was an excellent meal for us but was good for Sunday lunch. We found the place a little too "pet friendly" but then the whole of Whitby was a little doggy mad for...

We have been going to w h & g for 25 years, different ownership but somehow it's always the one we go back to if we want a great meal, and tonight was no exception. The Resturant is still welcoming, with candles and a relaxing feeling. But the food is so good. King prawn to start for us , then...

The food good along time to come out it's very expensive with some meals without a side! Food was dry over salted and under salted at times. Think this place needs a revamp/thought on the dishes and timing and different prices £17 for chicken with qual egg dry 1 tiny egg, this place has so much potential

Wife and I found this pub quite by accident when I lurched into it about 3pm in need of a pint. Great beer and on way to loo walked through what appeared a terrific little restaurant with a fabulous range fire. We duly booked and headed back for 8pm. Just a terrific atmosphere and experience from start to finish -...

Just back from another stay at the WH&G, love the character of the place never fails! Really enjoyed the dinner and breakfast, eggs benedict to die for. Staff well trained, polite and professional as ever can't fault them. Strongly disagree with the previous insulting review regarding one member of staff whom we personally found to be quietly efficient with a...

We stayed in the Discovery room - one double room with seating area, and a separate twin room area (probably not suitable for young families though as there's a steep staircase adjoining the twin room). No onsite parking but we managed to find a spot in the nearby car park on Church street which is less than 5 mins walk...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
