My daughter and I attended the hotel and stayed for 2 nights. Attending a wedding. We were surprisingly very pleased with the hotel. After reading reviews. Manger was very helpful. Good value for money.
Stayed here for work purposes in the past, first call for a repeat visit to Middlesbrough combined with a weekend away. I think this hotel does what it says on the tin, cheap, comfortable no-frills accommodation. Yes it’s all a bit tired inside but it’s clean, comfortable and I’d rather pay less and have something a little frayed but functional than paying for something that looks trendy on Instagram. Plenty of parking on site. Good little gym and pool / sauna on site. There is an on site pub (reviewed separately) that has a decent selection of food. Would recommend for budget accommodation whilst in the area.
The room was shocking the bed was atrocious! The swimming pool was dirty as were the changing rooms. And because I left a bad review after complaining to receptionist & hearing nothing from them, a week l was told I could have had a refund but not now as I left the bad review! AVOID this place..it’s cheap for a reason!
When you book a "bargain' hotel your expectations have to be lowered in some way; but this was ridiculous! I booked an executive business suite, via the Sporting Lodge website, as a treat for my wife, who'd had some family problems over the last couple of weeks; a chance to kick back and have fun. We had stayed here before (we got married here!) and always found the stay quite pleasant on the whole. The room we were given was NOT the executive business suite and was filthy! Dust in the bathroom and surfaces and dead flies squashed into the ceiling. We complained about the quality of the room and the fact I had paid a premium for the Executive. We were very promptly moved and half the cost of the room was refunded. We also advised that our room had been double booked due to the wedding. Interesting that the hotel would've known which rooms the hotel party had, being as they have to be booked in advance. How was the Executive room available to book a fortnight before our stay? On to the bar. We ordered a couple of drinks and when asked if my wife could have ice in her gin and tonic, the bar staffed huffed at her! It also took three people to make two drinks! We asked for an ice bucket, "there's a wedding on" which become a familiar refrain during the visit. On to the meal, we arranged for a table in the restaurant, which has closed off and told to take a seat in the bar area. When I ordered drinks, the bar staff member practically threw the signature slip at me! Food ordered, and only one starter came out! When I asked where the second starter was I was asked which table I was on. Why should this matter I have no idea. This was now 8pm and the stay had devolved into a nightmare! Unhappy, I explained to the duty manager who looked to resolve the myriad of poor issues we had suffered. In the meantime, we were told that there was a restricted menu because of the wedding and that some of the food listed as starters on the typed up menu (no branding or anything) had been considered sides on the system. Thanks for the explanation but its not my problem that the hotel has a poor system in place! (Incidentally, on previous stays the same starter had been ordered and arrived correctly) As it was, whilst waiting for the resolution to our complaints, we packed up the room. The duty manager (Ashley?) was fantastic, took the litany of complaints seriously and after speaking to his manager, we were refund our whole stay, leaving the hotel before 9pm on the day we checked in, after a full refund for our very short stay (perhaps a visit is more accurate) was given. In conclusion, the wedding party looked great and the brides looked fantastic! If the hotel can't manage a function and maintain its quality to other guests staying at the same time, then close to other guests. Offering less than half service (you had to pre booked your breakfast because.....you guessed it the wedding) is not acceptable. Additionally, if you are serving to distinct guest types, I appreciate how busy the staff at the bar can be, but DO NOT huff, sigh, roll your eyes when a customer asks you for something reasonable like ice in a gin or a glass of ice water! Finally, it says something that when we were moved to the second room, even the member of staff said "yeah, the rooms are tatty". Suffice to say, we will not be staying at the Sporting Lodge again.…
I suppose you get what you pay for but whatever you pay there should be good levels of housekeeping. Unfortunately, the management of housekeeping at this hotel was not very good at all! TV remote filthy, chairs in the room filthy!, TV table covered in dust and hair, shower control filthy, the toilet seat was loose and had bits missing, the taps at the sink had to be turns almose twice to get water to flow. There was only one electrical socket available with the TV one displaying a notice that it was alarmed .... eh???. It looks like this stingy hotel is trying to save on the amount of electricity you are using but, it wouldn't be so bad if they were investing the saved money back into cleanliness and hygiene. The room looks like it hadn't been properly cleaned for weeks or months even! This hotel was "renovated" in 2016? but the shower and hair drier looked like it was from the original installation in 1960, however, old shouldn't mean not clean. The food for breakfast and dinner was average and lunch was worse than that. However, the good things are that the room was a good size, the bedding smelled freshly laundered, and was clean. The gym and pool/spa area was good (I did my showering there), Plenty of parking spaces and was only a 10m drive from where I was going to. The staff were friendly with easy check-in and out.…
We came in for a Sunday carvery. It was fantastic! Lovely food, brilliant chef. Happy and smiley staff. Just a great experience all round. Very happy. Will definitely visit again in the future. Thank you!
The whole visit was just appalling.....Room dirty, lumpy bed, smallest bathroom ever. Fire alarm went off twice during the night... No WiFi, no phone signal, poor location of sockets. Noisy corridors, and people in the room above. The restaurant next door served burnt chips and no apology, replacement or refund offered.... I would not recommend to anyone.
Stayed here with my partner for 3 nights breakfast was lovely breakfast staff were very friendy but there was one that stood out the most she was called Carrie always smiling very chatty she couldn’t do enough for uz both really nice person , hotel a bit run down but very clean we will definitely come back again.
Me and my partner have stayed here several times before and always enjoyed our stay. Yes the hotel isn’t perfect but for the price you can’t moan, atleast this is what I thought! The room we were given on arrival was missing pillows, cups, towels etc, the chair in the room was covered in holes and heavily stained- defiantly needs binning! The carpet made an awful rustling sound when walked on, is the underlay made of carrier bags? After a chat with the friendly gentleman at reception we were allocated a new room which was much better but still wasn’t perfect- no chair in the room, tv had to be turned off and back on again at the wall if you wanted to change channel, ALOT of dust in the fan in the bathroom (only takes a second to clean using the hoover) and the bathroom tiles haven’t been wiped in months - lots of marks and dirty that I could wash away myself whilst in the shower. We do love the land surrounding the hotel, it’s great for exercising the dog and the staff are generally friendly. It’s also great that the leisure facilities are included in the room rate although we didn’t get around to using them this time. Some rooms in the hotel are ok and some really aren’t ok so I guess it depends on what room you are allocated as to weather you have a good experience here or not - not sure we’ll be rushing back but may considering staying again if we were in the area.…
