The California is a charming, modern and quirky bed and breakfast, less than a minute's walk away from King's Cross and St. Pancras stations. Our 60 stylishly refurbished rooms, each one cosy and comfortable, are spread over four Georgian townhouses, and we've retained as much of the original architecture as possible; our windows, corridors and staircases are all original. This means that we don't have a lift, but we do keep our reception open 24 hours a day. We have high speed WiFi is throughout the hotel and have a fantastic little bar, lounge and private terrace for our guests to enjoy. We serve a great breakfast. Welcome to The California London. Visit anytime, explore every time.

The California hotel has garnered praise for its well-designed rooms that strike a balance between traditional and modern styles, and for maintaining a high standard of cleanliness. Its prime location near major transport hubs is a highlight for many travelers, facilitating sightseeing and travel. Although the rooms are noted to be on the smaller side with varied experiences concerning noise levels, the hotel's amenities generally meet guests' expectations for convenience. The staff's exceptional service is frequently commended, adding value to the guest experience despite some views on room pricing.

Its difficult to find reasonably priced "family" hotels in London, specifically hotels that will allow 4 guests per room. Paying for two rooms for your family of four can get expensive real fast and separate rooms are not desirable for pre-teen families. The good: promixity to St. Pancres and the Eurostar; clean rooms at a good price for a 4 person room. Clean, comfortable beds, friendly staff and free breakfast. The other: The 4 person room was tiny; especially by American standards. If your family cannot co-exist within 175 or so sq ft; you are in for a rough night(s). The phone booth size shower is actually smaller than a phone booth. At 6' 180 lbs, it worked for me; my king and queen size bretheren would be channeged. If you are approaching 300 lbs. and are over 6'3, the shower area simply won't work for you.

Really enjoyed our stay! Personnel is very welcoming and ready to go extra mile for the comfort of their guests. On the day of departure guests can leave all their luggage in the reception in secure room. Rooms were cleaned every day, even on Christmas Day! You can enjoy rather cheap breakfast in the hotel or there is a variety of places to eat within 1-3 mins walk. Will return here again!

The accomodation gives you a real English feeling, especially if you're not from England. The rooms are cozy and the way to you room is like a fun maze. The location is perfect. Just in 2 minutes you can get on the subway or do some groceries. One thing we didn't like about the stay was the temperature on the room. At first it's very cold and then suddenly it's very hot, there was no inbetween.

The California’s only positives are location (close to King’s Cross) and appearance (vaguely modern furnishings). Otherwise, my stay here was horrible but many of these things can be fixed by The California relatively simply. The most annoying problem was the wifi—this is the worst wifi I have ever experienced, I would rather it just not be offered than be logged out every 30 minutes on the dot. Room was fine overall but very small (couldn’t fully open my carry-on luggage) and some light staining on white bedding. Much more concerning, a male housekeeper unlocked our door unannounced which made me feel unsafe the rest of the time staying here. We were interrupted several more times after this by housekeeping, including multiple times in a day, which could be fixed with a do not disturb sign or similar. Regardless, it’s incredibly inappropriate to enter an occupied room without permission. Staff members were broadly rude, especially the women at the front desk. Upon checking out, we were charged for breakfast which was advertised as included in our booking. We wouldn’t really care, but it was truthfully the worst breakfast imaginable. I had a pastry because there were no vegetarian options and my partner had scrambled eggs and bacon—my partner who will eat anything said they were the worst eggs he has ever had in his life. The food was completely unlabeled and utensils were shared across items which is a massive allergy risk and makes eating with dietary restrictions impossible here. Labeling and (even minimal) separation of items/utensils would make a big difference in my view, but partner says it’s best just to not eat the food because it was that disgusting. Would recommend staying anywhere else in London, please don’t bother with The California.

I have travelled frequently for business for the past 15 years - my stay with the California is the first I have ever had to cut short mid reservation to go to another hotel. The room smelled of (cigarette) smoke the first night, I made a remark but was told there were smoke detectors in the hotel so ... it was unlikely I was smelling smoke. The second evening, having returned from a day of meetings, I could really smell smoke and mentioned it at the front desk. Furthermore, I asked for the room to be serviced. It had not been. I waited for someone to call or stop round (about an hour and a half) no one did. I was begining to feel ill and opened the window and realised I would not be able to sleep with the windows wide open above my head (was cold that day). As such, I made the decision to change hotels. I was charged the full room rate nonetheless -10%. Upon check out, I was told the staff at the desk were not at liberty to do anything to find solutions in their manager's absence. I asked for the managers email. I wrote an email and the address was returned as undeliverable. Absolutely depolorable.

Dear Guest, Thank you very much for sharing your feedback. I am sorry to hear that your stay with us was not up to your preferred standard and that you had to change Hotel due to this. Based on my team's feedback which has personally checked your room i can state that there was no smell of cigarettes into your room and i do not understand why you would want to extend your stay for another night and choose to keep the same room if this was not suitable. In regards to your room not being cleaned, you left the "do not disturb" sign on your door so you might understand that in this case our policy is not to service the room. All our bedrooms are non-smoking and if this would occur the alarm would go on in seconds so please excuse me if i find difficult to believe this was the case not 1 but 2 days in a row. Wish you all the best,

There was a sudden change of plan and I had to find an inexpensive hotel for four nights in central London. The California is a few steps from Kings Cross/St Pancras and location is its main asset. It is charmingly quirky with helpful smiling staff. My room was small but the bed was comfortable, sheets and towels were impeccably clean, and there was masses of hot water for showers. Tremendous value for money!

It is a few meters from Kings Cross station. The staff is always very friendly and the room for 1 person is very clean, bright, airy and very comfortable. The soundproofing was very good, there was no noise from traffic or other rooms. They have a machine to refill the bottle with filtered water, you can do late check-out with prior notice and leave your suitcases stored for free.
Highly recommended and good value for money.

I stayed one night to be able to get to the train station very early the next morning. I arrived exhausted from having lugged very heavy luggage down stairs are the location I'd been staying at and then down stairs at 2 tube stations. The young woman at the desk at The California recognized I was at my limits (I'm not young), and she herself carried my two heavy pieces of luggage to my room while I sat in the lobby. She also made arrangements to have someone bring them down the next morning. The room was very small (which I expected), but very comfortable for a short stay, it was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was very nice. I was in a room that was quiet, no street noise at all, surprising for being just 1 block off Euston Rd. Windows open, so I got nice fresh air. I will stay there again when I need to leave from St. Pancras Station.

We chose California Hotel because of the location that was really comfortable for our arrival by train but also for the transport in London. We chose the small room that was the cheapest and the room was nice but indeed very small. Since we were out the whole day that was not a problem for us. The check in and check out was very fast. At the room there was water, coffee and tea offered. As it regards the toiletries, there was shampoo/body shower at the bathroom and a hairdryer. The hotel doesn't have an elevator but we were lucky to be placed on the first floor so that was not a problem for us.
The overall stay was very nice.

OK, The California is a "reasonably priced" hotel in a great location for travelling. Its not superb in the fact it is close to arrival and departure stations rather than being close to attractions (unless you're train spotting or dining at One St Pancras area).

When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel has been renovated and looked clean, tidy and welcoming. The bar isn't overly well stocked, but did for us as a quick drink before going out. Great snacks though!

Our room was downstairs and upon opening it we were again surprised. Small, but clean and funky decor. As we were there for 2 nights and night 1 were at a concert it was very much just a place to crash, and that's where it started to go a bit wrong.

We returned to our room around 12:30am, got into bed happy to get some sleep, great gig a few drinks and a long day. Then the neighbours came home!!!

OK, one night I can stand, within an hour they had gone to sleep and it wasn't that loud. But the walls are thin, so there was some noise.

Night 2. A great day shopping, some drinks, again ready for sleep...

4 hours of noise from different neighbours who seemed unable to speak at anything but shouting, singing and generally being a nuisance. Now I'm generally one not to stand up and complain, but the issue here is that I didn't actually feel safe doing so and as the rooms do not have phones in them I didn't want to walk to Reception to complain in my PJ'S. They even went for food at 5am and stood in the hallway discussing it joy.

It was pretty unbearable when the room above got up at 7am and walked like an elephant, sleep over.

In all fairness Reception were apologetic but I am unsure what they apologised for. It is just a shame that a nice place at a cheap price will always attract cheap people and a lack of facilities like a phone doesn't help solve issues.

What the hotel can avoid is, cheap walls, cheap ceilings (seen this mentioned elsewhere too) a lack of facilities. It's a real pity as in general for a place to crash hotel it would have been great, but we won't be returning.

You'll hardly hear anything from the main road. The hotel's walls and doors are quite thin, though. You're more likely to hear your neighbors than the road.
