We stayed at this Hotel just before Christmas. The building is very old and parts need updating, the lift is really old fashioned, but fun. It is in a great location, very near the town and the car parking reasonable at £5 a day. The beds were very comfortable, the room cosy, well decorated and clean. The breakfast was hot and tasty, mainly to English tastes. The bathroom was modern but needs a fixed overhead shower instead of hand held as the water goes everywhere. When using the toilet you actually touched the towel rail, which probably explains why it was never hot. There was a gap at the top of the window which meant it was always open, this was not a problem as the curtains were very thick . We had to ask for the room to be serviced as it had not been done by 3pm. and we wanted a shower and a rest after lunch before going out to an evening party.

We stayed for one night whilst attending an event in Southampton. The staff were all lovely, the lady in the bar was very friendly and the drinks were cheap. The room was a bit shabby but that didn't impact our stay. Everything was clean and the bathroom was nice with a new shower. We didn't use the hotel car park as it was full when my husband arrived so we put the car in the multistorey behind the hotel which only charged us £1. I would stay at this hotel again.

Unfortunately for us we got a room at the front of the hotel, the glazing was single and it sounded like the drunken yobs outside were in the room with us. Not to mention the cars racing up the road all night and wheel spinning. The front bedrooms urgently need upgrading to at least double glazing as this kept us up till 3am only to be woken at 6am by the road sweeper going back and forth!!!
Staff were friendly and our room had been recently jazzed up with some nice wallpaper but the bathroom was incredibly dated and the "shower" was a naff mixer tap one over the bath that was either a scolding hot or freezing cold dribble. The toilet needed to be pumped.
Luckily our neighbours on our floor were quiet at least because there was a 2 inch gap under our bedroom door so not a great deal of privacy. We used the cushions supplied to cover it but still found ourselves whispering. The car park is good if you can get a spot and it was a good location in terms of being near shops and pubs and the old wall.
Our room was clean but we will only remember the noise afraid.

Me and my friend stayed for a girly break. I thought we might have a rocky stay after 5 minutes of arriving and the receptionist informing us that only us were allowed to stay in the room and we couldn’t bring other people to our room....I’m not sure what on Earth he thought we were staying for but we were dressed presentable and both have long term partners. We laughed it off! He finished his shift not long after and the next time we walked through reception we were greeted by the night porter who was honestly the friendliest most helpful porter ever! Genuine interest in helping guests and chatting to them. Lovely bloke, we would return just for that great service! The rooms are well presented, clean, and great value for the money we paid (£45 for the room) loved the fact that the tv was a smart tv so we weren’t stuck with basic channels, it was all interactive. Beds comfy, pillows really comfy! The only thing I wish that could have been different was the air con having a rotating fan rather than the standard ones that don’t turn. The sweat poured from us and it was hard to sleep! But in fairness, we weren’t expecting that glorious weather so that’s not the hotels fault! All in all a great stay and we would happily return! Dans the man!

The hotel is average, breakfast good, view from room 65 is a wall, shower poor power.
Website states complimentary cheese and wine at 6.30 each evening, when asked about this reception said it wasn't available because bar closed! This was challenged and told hotel are trying to get it removed from website. The room was booked a few days before our visit over the phone giving staff an opportunity to inform us of this fact, we were not. The offer was on the website then and still on the site several days later, extremely misleading and false.
This offer swayed our decision to stay at the star rather than Ibis, there will be a call to Trading Standards so other potential customers are not misled!

A former coaching inn dating from the 1800s, about a mile walk to train station or just take the bus. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful, free parking, the lift is a little ancient! Breakfast tasty and filling. Nothing fancy, basic vintage hotel rooms with tea and coffeemaking equipment and TV, there is a notice encouraging you to buy rooms fixtures, and no accidently remove them!

TIP: Be warned there are lots of stairs, but great views of the town from the top floor.
Thanks for reading. Would appreciate a thumbs up below if you’ve found this helpful.

We stayed at the The Star Hotel in October 2021 and again in Feb 2023 and nothing much has changed

Good points
Location is excellent
Breakfast is really good
Bed was really comfy and lovely clean sheets that smelled fresh
£6 to park for a day in the centre of Southampton is excellent
The team that we encountered for breakfast and the bar were great
Ok points
The room was cleanish on the surface but the decor needed attention also dust and dirt in all the corners
Bar was open drinks were a good price £8.70 for a large wine and a pint

Bad Points
The bathroom looked ok on the surface but was actually dirty with manky hair on the floor , the fixtures are chipped , peeling and tired and the toilet roll holder kept on dropping on the floor and the ceiling had peeling paint and mould all over it .
Wi-Fi rubbish I did mention it on the first night at reception but it didn’t improve over the two nights we stayed
Saturday morning we were woken up with building work near our room and right outside my mums room never mentioned when we checked in.
£50 deposit for damages , in my opinion nothing in the room is worth £50 so why charge ??? When I asked when it would refunded I was told up to 5 days
Bad smell in the corridor to our rooms
Heat in the hotel is phenomenal and in our room we couldn’t turn the radiator down as it was enclosed and was on all night
We paid £300 for two rooms for two nights , it’s a lot of money for a bed and a breakfast not so sure we would stay again

i stayed here for 1 night in may 2023. It is an old hotel but walls appeared to be freshly painted in parts of the hotel and outside in the alleyway leading to the car park. The room was very basic but clean and quiet overlooking the hotel car park. Check in wasnt until 2pm but i was able to leave my case there and walk about town. Check in at 2pm went smoothly and reception ordered me a taxi for 6.30am the following morning. As i was leaving early i knew it was too early for breakfast at the hotel and i asked would it be possible to get a coffee. i was told by the receptionist that he hadnt made any coffee and by the looks of him he wasnt going to make any. He gave out a couldnt care less vibe so maybe there is a course available the owner could send him on in how to speak to people.

Went for a Birthday Treat, very nice staff lovely English Breakfast included, nice decor in Bedroom, Bed extra large,a bit firm though, lovely bedding clean white duvet & pillowcases, Bathroom & Shower nice, just needs a few bits doing to it. ie a towel ring for hand towel by sink, the loo roll holder needs straightening,& a bigger wardrobe in the bedroom, I could only hang up about 5 items at a push,my partner had to use the shelves.Very quirky lift to rooms, out of the 1950,s. Queen Victoria stayed here in the 1830,s, great for history lovers. The hotel is about 200 years old, just needs a bit of TLC to make it shine a bit brighter. Would stay here again Great value for the price & in the center for everything, Quite quiet for the area too, whether because it is in February,& not high summer, but our room was ok not noisy only once when people went home late & used the hotel old coach house walkway to get to another road. All in all it was a nice Hotel.

Stayed in what’s described as a ‘cosy double’ room but it was actually big. Had two double beds and still plenty of room. Bed comfy. Everything in the room was very clean. It’s needs a little work when you look around. Cracks in the sink, bednobs missing and other bits and bats. None of these things affected our stay and it was good value for the price paid. Only comment I would make is the bathroom needs a curtain for more privacy.
We didn’t eat at the hotel but we did use the bar. Really friendly barman and prices are very reasonable. It’s a old hotel so creaky floorboards etc but that’s part of the experience. We paid £104 for 2 nights and thought it was good value for what we got. Parking is just behind the hotel and £5 daily. Would stay here again.
