The Leonardo Royal Hotel Southampton Grand Harbour often receives compliments for its prime location near shopping, docks, and the city center, as well as for maintaining high standards of cleanliness. The ambiance of the hotel is perceived as welcoming with a blend of modern and luxurious elements, though some areas are considered outdated. While service is generally recognized as friendly, issues with responsiveness have been noted. Room experiences are mixed, with some guests enjoying the amenities and others facing maintenance and hygiene issues. Furthermore, the value proposition of the hotel sometimes falls short of guest expectations, with inconsistent pricing and additional charges causing some dissatisfaction.

Stayed at the Leonardo Royal Hotel first of June pre cruise. The checkin process was good, arrived early so luggage was stored till room was ready. The Hotel location is great walking distance, 15 minutes to the Horizion Terminal and close to a lot of eating and shopping locations. Buffet breakfast was good with a lot of variety. Would recommend this hotel if you are looking for one close to the cruise terminals in Southampton

We stayed at the Leonardo Hotel in Southampton as it was conveniently located for a gig at The 1865.

We booked an executive room via Hotels.com without breakfast but added this on for £15 pp at check in which we felt was good value. Breakfast was buffet style with several hot and cold stations and plenty of choice. All food and drinks were of a high standard and the restaurant overlooked the old walls.

The executive room was large and clean with ample tea and coffee, bottles of still and sparkling water, a box of truffles, tin of shortbread, guest robes, and toiletries. There is a huge tv, wardrobe area, and in room safe. Wifi connection was fast with great signal.

We loved the warm swimming pool which had a spa, steam room and sauna attached. There is also a gym.

The staff in all areas were very friendly and polite.

There is ample parking on site. It was a little concerning to see signs stating it was £5 an hour, but on closer inspection it was £14 for 24 hours, which as then discounted to £7 on check in.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would be happy to recommend and stay again.

This is our third time staying in this hotel and it was not enjoyable as the previous visits.

We thought to book the Billington Suite as we stayed in standard rooms in the past and had the best of times. But sadly this was not the case, here are my reasons why.

1. When booking the room I had confirmation that the Billington suite was booked for us as this room came with the jacuzzi bath and a shower, when we checked in we had got the Chilton Suite instead that did not come with the jacuzzi bath and shower as that was the reason we wanted a suite.

2. Once we got up to the Chilton suite we found a pile of towels, robes and bedding just shoved in a pile outside our room, this stayed here for 5-10hours until moved. This was blocking a fire escape route and could have been a tripping hazard.

3. My fiancé dropped his ring on the floor and rolled underneath the sofa, he went searching for it and found 2 empty cans for fosters underneath the sofa. We was disappointed with is as we thought being a high valued suite it should be spotless but the cleanliness levels was below average.

4. I was awoken in the night by the smell of smoke, opened up my door to find out that someone down our hallway was smoking in there room, the smell stayed in our room for hours but stayed in the hallway for days. Being non - smokers this was quite a distinct smell.

5. There is one perk about having a suite and that is having 15% off all food and drink in the bar/restaurant, sadly this did not happen to us. We had some lunch in the bar, once ordered we told them what room we were staying in and he just looked through us and charged us with the rather pricy bill. We worked out the cost of the items we ordered and no discount was added.

We also found a rather explicit photo in our drinks menu, we checked another menu and it did not have the photo in, we were confused.

we thought that paying £541 was rather expensive and that the experience was rather disappointing to say the least.

Good Afternoon Sophie P, Thank you very much for leaving a review. We are truly sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the cleanliness and the smoking inconveniences. Our hotels are smoke-free hotels and smoking is not allowed inside any of our hotel's bedrooms or public areas, where we do catch people smoking in the rooms, we will issue fines. We’d truly love it if you had the chance to reconsider your choice not to return so we can have a chance to improve your impressions! Kind regards Melisa Customer Experience Team

Myself and my Fiance arrived at the hotel at 2pm on 31/12/24 hoping we may be able to check in slightly earlier. We were told we could not check in as the room was not ready and told to return at 3pm - very reasonable given check in is 3pm. However, at this point, we were not advised that the spa facilities were unavailable from 3.30pm due to it being NYE. We returned to check in at the appropriate time, and that is when we were advised that due to it being NYE, the pool/spa was closing early and that we could not use the facilities until 8 am the following day. Myself and my partner had taken the day off work especially to use the facilities that afternoon in the hotel. We got engaged on Christmas Day: so this was a particularly special new year for us, so it was for us going to be a lovely relaxing afternoon for us to celebrate our engagement. The reception staff were polite and clearly embarrassed , however we feel we really should have been given the option to use the spa facilities when we tried to check in at 2pm, or should have been contacted prior to check in that the spa was closing early. We do not feel that paying near on £130 for one night warrants not being able to use the pool and spa for the afternoon of arrival. We also did not have the best night sleep as we were on the same floor as multiple families who kept swapping rooms and loudly talking / knocking on each others door until around 2am. We tried to call reception to complain at around 1pm but we had no answer. We then queued up to complain on the day of check out, but after 15 minutes of being in the queue, we had to leave as are both medial emergency workers and were on shift New Year’s Day afternoon, so had to get home to change and get to work. We really are disappointed with our stay and feel like our stay was not with the money.

We first arrived at the hotel early, mid day probably and our room wasn't ready and we didn't expect it to be but we was happy to chill out in the bar and pop into town, went to the bar and the first 2 signature cocktails I wanted couldn't be made because of missing ingredients 3rd time lucky but wasnt what I really wanted, went to town and came back at 6pm, checked in.

Room was perfect temperature, really lovely, went to put the tv on and no remote, phoned reception and the lady that checked us in brought us a new remote. Quick shower and back out to the marina where one of the other staff recommended was a good walk and a nice place to visit and she was spot on lovely walk and nightlife.

Got back about 10.30pm ish to a party on the mezzanine floor it felt like it was directly below us, I turned my phone into a white noise machine and cranked it right up, the music was still way over that and I just couldn't sleep, I called reception at 11pm and ask when the party was going to finish, I wasn't rude but I wasn't my usual polite self, I was told it would go on for around another hour, well it went on to about 1am!

I really wasn't happy, we had come from London and the room wasn't cheap to get very little sleep. Got up not particularly in a good mood and went to make a coffee, coffee machine didn't work, just added to the mood.

When we checked out I made sure I spoke to the lady that checked us in as we had spoken to her a few times in very good spirits, when I told her our main issue she suggested she get the manager but we had treatments booked at the spa and I wasn't exactly sure what could be done seeing as we had already paid. She suggested we send it all in an email.

I was offered complementary upgrades on my next stay at this hotel only, basically I would have to spend over £200 on a room plus the cost of getting there and they would upgrade our room and give us breakfast, that was not acceptable to me and they came back with no other resolution.

We stayed in room 203, rooms need to be allocate better if they have a function on!

I've contacted the hotel twice now to discuss a concern we had during our stay and have had no response, I contacted them via their email contact at the bottom of their page asking if someone would contact me, I heard nothing back so a few days later actually rang the hotel and was given a managers email address to which I sent a message to and sadly still no response.
I was staying with my husband and son, room 305 and we ate at Leo's in the hotel on the night. A member of staff came to take our order and asked for our room number so she could set up a tab, our food came which was lovely and we really enjoyed. When we were ready to leave there were no staff in the restaurant area so thought, as we do in many hotels that we would pay upon checkout. After getting back to our room and getting into our night wear to be settled for the night we received a phone call from a member of staff saying we hadn't paid the bill and needed to do so. I explained we were in our night wear and it was fine and we would be paying at checkout the following morning but he insisted it needed to be paid there and then. He came up to our room and knocked on the door with the card machine, both me and my husband answered the door, I asked if a service charge had been added which he replied yes so I asked for this to be removed from the bill because I feel the service we received by someone knocking on our door for payment was unsatisfactory. We were offered a discount on the bill which we refused as we enjoyed the food and only wanted the service charge to be removed. Only after tapping the card we were made aware that we had been given the discount which we hadn't asked for.
Upon checkout we mentioned this to the lovely girl on reception who asked if we would like to speak to a manager but we had a rail bus replacement we needed to catch so couldn't do so.
This is the second time we have stayed at The Grand Harbour and sadly could be our last after this experience.

this is a lovely hotel> The room was very comfortable especially the bed. The location is good if you are there a night before your cruise. The dinner that I ordered was perfect BUT there is no breakfast available. Lunch is supposed to be available at noon with tea or coffee around 1145. I was sitting there at that time. No one approached me, One man at the counter was served a full lunch at noon. When did he put in his ordered? The one waiter straightened up a pile of menu at the bar, set some tables up for the afternoon and did not take an order from any other people seated and waiting. At 1215 I went across the street to the Holiday Inn that is full service. I did speak to one of the :manager team". I pointed out that they were wasting their $ paying that waitrer as he is driving away their business.

Disappointing? Insofar as we could have booked a Premier Inn or Travel Lodge and enjoyed as much service at half the cost or less and a better breakfast. £202 for an "Executive Room" excluding breakfast and we had to phone Reception to ask for a chair!

Breakfast (£18 each) not included.
The Restaurant boasts Marco Pierre White as its creator (photos everywhere) and "he" recommends a Rib Eye Steak to be cooked "medium" the Server said, .... no matter that I wanted it medium rare - it must be they use cheap meat! So, no steak then! My wife's Rack of Lamb was over-cooked, not pink as requested.

Disappointing....

Then, at Breakfast, paid extra in advance at Reception, it was as though MPW was on duty - "You're not on the list", he said, " Go to Reception..." Thoroughly welcoming? No.

All for £202 and no chair.

Oh, let's not forget the Pool - nice enough, with jacuzzi, but accessible only down a "manky", wet and slippery circular staircase. Oh dear, we won't be staying here again.

All of the staff were pleasant, sometimes above and beyond, but I would not stay here again. Our room was unbearable hot. Our room opened to a balcony, so we propped the door open for a breeze, but didn't want to chance this while we were sleeping. There are not enough lights in the room to begin with (I like ambiance lighting, but sometimes you need an option to see) and one of the hall lights was out making it even darker. We could have called maintenance, but, frankly, I don't want to deal with extra chores when I am a guest. We experienced, then observed (we stayed several days) check in time seems chaotic. We were told at 2 pm we would get our room key at 3 pm, so we went for a walk and had lunch in the cafe. Many hotels allow you to go through the process, then pop back for your key, but we had to wait in line again, ultimately getting our key around 3:40. Since I'm writing, I'd like to suggest they install more than one hook as we had two towels and two robes. Plus, it would be helpful to have a light directly above the closet section that was built to lay out a suitcase because it is very dark in that cubby as the hall light didn't reach that area. The staff was good, the internet connection was good, the room was clean. The staff was quick to apologize for problems, so management just needs to ask their staff what they need to solve the problems, such as a system to check guests in without immediately distributing keys and scanning the rooms for broken lights, air conditioners, etc. Giving their staff the systems and tools to attend to the minor details would allow their pleasant staff to shine, not put them in a position to constantly apologize. This could quickly go from a "one star" to a "five star" with the right attention.

The hotel is ideally located a 5 minute walk from the ferry terminals and a 15minute walk from the railway station in Southampton.
All the staff were very professional from receptionists to catering staff to staff working in the leisure centre.
Our ‘Superior King’ room on the 2nd floor was very spacious with 1 of the largest beds I have ever slept on; good free wi-fi; a large flatscreen tv; tea and coffee facilities; toiletries and bathtub in a spacious bathroom and partial harbour views.
Breakfast was served in the main dining room - and consisted of an extensive hot and cold buffet (including 3 types of eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, sausages, beans, sauté potatoes, toast, yoghurts, pastries, cereals & various juices, teas and coffees) We did not eat in the Marco Pierre White restaurant for dinner as it is closed on Sundays.
We took advantage of the included leisure facilities and had a relaxing swim in the attractive heated indoor pool although the jacuzzi wasn’t working at the time.
Overall, I would recommend staying here for an overnight stay either pre or post-cruise or if you just wanted to explore Southampton and its surroundings.
