Good in parts. Poor in others. One gripe was the coldness of the room. In this day and age I am all for cutting down on consumption but when I checked in I was told that the heating would come on at 5pm. The room was quite chill and I had to keep my outer clothes on. What got my goat was that on mentioning this when checking out it was brushed aside with "We are about to give the heating system a good check over," rather than coming clean and admitting that for periods there is no heat because it is on a timer. The other gripe was the misleading impression that parking is available. It is certainly free in the surrounding area with the permit the hotel gives. It is no good having a permit though if there are no spaces. One person in my party on a wet cold Saturday night spent half an hour driving round and round. Not finding a space he had to park in a municipal car park some distance away. Other than these, and the ridiculously frenetic wallpaper all was fine. Would I stay again, no, I'd look for somewhere better

Response from Reception H, General Manager at Florence Gardens Boutique Hotel and Restaurant
Responded 28 Dec 2022
Thank you for taking the time to review the hotel. We have tried to locate your stay in our system to work out who you dealt with at reception but have been unable to based on the details given here and that no direct feedback was provided - only the online review. On arrival all guests are made aware that the heating is on a timer system because we find that, outside of very extreme weather, the buildings can become uncomfortably hot if the heating is on constant. We make guests aware on arrival and can provide an efficient fixed radiator if guests are sensitive to the cold. Every guest is different - some will turn the radiators off to zero as soon as they arrive and some will want a heater so we do try to please everyone and ensure the stay is comfortable. We have had guests request fans in December and heaters in August so this is definitely an area where each person is quite unique and we always aim to get the balance right. We were keen to work out who you spoke to as the comment made to you is unusual, as you recognise, and we can't understand why any staff member would comment about giving the heating system a check over. If any guest is cold we would immediately address and resolve that rather than you feel uncomfortable. We aim for all guests to have a pleasurable and comfortable stay and this is not possible if you are cold. Parking is readily available on the street outside - particularly out of season when you stayed in November. We were not aware of you being unable to park or could gladly have helped find a nearby space at the time, knowing the area extremely well would have made this something staff could address as quickly as possible for you but the review is the first time we have been aware. We are very sorry to hear you won't be joining us again in the future and hope you can find somewhere that better suits your requirements when next in the area. Your comments have been passed to our reception manager to address with the whole team to ensure this experience is not repeated and I appreciate you taking the time to let us know about your stay. We wish you all the best on your future travels.

This was such a lovely boutique hotel. Friendly check in, clean and beautifully decorated room. Tea and a lovely brand of coffee in the room. For our room, breakfast was included and it was really lovely with very nice staff serving us. I would highly recommend this lovely boutique hotel. Simply gorgeous :)

We had such a lovely start, our first room was really noise, we was on first floor and the room above sounded like a heard of elephants moving around like they was tripping! Certainly not the hotels fault but we thought we would mention it… the staff couldn’t do enough we had another room within 5mins, our new room was more lovelier the our first room. Staff are polite and welcoming! Friendly and kind Then we went for our breakfast… I loved every mouth. I have OcD and kind of paranoid when it comes to food, sausages wasn’t cheap, bacon was tasty and everything else ticked my boxes. I will be returning

Comprising of four buildings the Florence Gardens is situated not far from the sea front. There is off-road parking but if you arrive at the weekend prepare to park a fair distance away using the parking pass if the hotel parking is full. I moved the car on the Monday morning to park in the off road parking We had a double room, although it was small it was very clean, the bed was comfortable and the room nicely decorated. The breakfast was excellent, there was a great choice and it was well cooked, using quality ingredients. The staff were all excellent, all helpful and appeared happy in their work We walked from here to the Royal Historic Dockyard, it took around an hour to get there, walking along the sea front. The hotel is not far away there are plenty of quality bars and restaurants We will book here again

The Florence Gardens Boutique Hotel is located in a quiet, mostly residential area. It is a short walk to the waterfront, to restaurants and to shops. When we arrived we were lucky to snag the last off-street parking space, otherwise I'm not sure what we would have done because on-street parking seemed to be hard to find. We booked a 'superior room' - it was huge and well furnished. The only amenity we would have liked to add was some AC as it was getting quite warm while we were there. We had dinner outside at their garden restaurant - excellent pizza! Breakfast was also excellent, and we enjoyed having that outside as well. Be advised - there is no lift, so if your luggage is heavy, as ours was, it's quite a slog up to the third floor.

Many thanks for your kind review, we are thrilled to hear you enjoyed your stay in Portsmouth and loved the large Superior room. Whilst AC is commonplace in the US it's less so here though we certainly would have been grateful for it with the recent heatwave the UK has experienced. We are glad you enjoyed the restaurant and outside breakfast space too, a bonus in the summer months. I'm sorry to hear you struggled with bags, staff are always very happy to assist with luggage though we do also have ground floor rooms if preferred. We hope to see you if you are back in the UK again.

Great Stay at this lovely little Boutique hotel. So close to the sea front and a short walk away from some lovely places to eat and drink. The hotel is super clean and super friendly. The breakfast was one of the best I’d had in a hotel and the service was so friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Parking can be a challenge in the narrow roads, we got lucky with either a space in the hotel or very close by on the road.

Visited for a night, stayed in the Florence Gardens building, room 3. A quirky collection of buildings/rooms. Great sized room, thickest carpet ever, big shower. Staff were all friendly, breakfast was delicious. Off road parking, we got a spot right outside. It’s a really cute place, everything I’d expect from a boutique hotel. We loved it! Thanks so much!

What a fantastic hotel in central Southsea! I spent one night in the superior suite in Somerset which was fabulous. It was great value for the location and the room itself. The hotel offers free parking which is available around the local streets, I was fortunate enough to get one of the parking spaces off road but seen loads of places to park within 100m of the property, I have seen a few reviews saying "no parking" etc but this isn't the case, it isn't like a premier inn with it's own massive car park but for a small business I think they've done well with offering free parking within the local area. I've stayed in a few hotels in Southsea and parking is always an issue but this hotel does it well. I checked in and was escorted to my room which was nice, I was in the building opposite the reception which was tastefully decorated and quiet. My room itself was amazing! Great value for money and very high end furnishings. The towels were super soft and I just wanted to jump into the massive bath but went out a walk instead, The local area is lovely, there's various bars and restaurants in the vicinity, When I got back I went for that massive bath and used the rainfall shower after that - there's great water pressure and the shower gel and conditioner there is high end. Breakfast was amazing! I opted for the garden breakfast which was the vegetarian option and I had to ask what the sausages were as they were lovely, they use Linda McCartney veg sausages which had a slight chilli kick to them which was nice, I also had a poached egg, hash brown, mushrooms and beans, it was great and included in my stay. Overall - it's a fantastic hotel in Southsea that I'll definitely revisit with the wife the next time I'm in the area. Well done team Florence
