Holliday Inn hotels offer a standard that generally won't disappoint. The same is the case with this one: the rooms are clean and spacious enough, the service is attentive and the additional (and huge) plus is its location, in the middle of Portsmouth. If you've planned to visit all of the Portsmouth's main attractions and museums, you'll get everywhere on foot, in a maximum of 10 minutes.
The same goes for most restaurants - there are more than dozen, within the walking distance.

Breakfast was not great but due to Covid-19 situation the hotel had to introduce some limits, so it was hard to expect breakfast to be more than just eating food. Underground parking is a great convenience if you come by car - after validation the ticket at hotel's reception I paid ... £ 2 for 48 hours stay.

The train station in the immediate vicinity of the hotel may be a disadvantage. Most of the night you can hear the noise of trains moving and braking (I suppose there are freight trains delivering cargo to the port). It is a bit unpleasant if you like to sleep with the window opened, so it's probably worth to ask for a room with a window facing the other side.

I’m an IHG member and have been staying at this hotel since it opened as I have friends & family down here. The best thing about the hotel for us is the location. Restaurants, bars and historic Dockyard are all walking distance. Parking free f24 hrs then £2 for the next 24. Some of the rooms are starting to look a bit tired but generally we always find it clean, comfy and the staff are very helpful. I always ask for a room on the back as although the view isn’t good you’ll get a much better nights sleep as the front is opposite nightclub and bar. The breakfasts have often been a little lacklustre but I dont expect much other than cereals and toast tbh. In fairness we thought that the breakfast this time was much improved. We thought the manager was very good we had a slight problem with anti social behaviour in another room and thought the manager dealt with it properly and were satisfied. We also got a much better deal booking direct with IHG than other websites. We will be back in summer!

We stayed 2 nights at short notice after our AirBnB unexpectedly cancelled on us. It was unclear that we could stay the 2nd night because they were fully booked but Kyle and Peter at reception were so kind and helpful, explaining the possibilities and keeping us informed throughout our first day. We were lucky to get a second night, had to change rooms but we were happy to.
Everywhere in the hotel was very clean. The reception/bar/lounge area was a nice spot to enjoy a drink (served by Kyle), enjoy a take-out, or pizza from the hotel (also served by Kyle), and enjoy the view of Gunwharf. There was free tea, coffee & hot chocolate available all day.
The rooms were clean & spacious benefitting from air conditioning, white linens & moderately comfy beds.
Breakfast was a varied selection of cold choices and drinks plus hot food cooked and served by....guess who... Kyle and his trusty manager Peter, along with a friendly and efficient team of other staff members. Breakfast was very good and very plentiful. When you take into account the price of going out for breakfast it really justified the fairly high room rate
The location is perfect for a walk to all the museums at Portsmouth docks, the train station, Gosport ferry, Spinaker Tower, and all the shops and restaurants of Gunwharf which are literally a step outside the door. You can leave your car in the underground parking garage and not use it at all, which is what we did.
The reception staff for our 2nd evening were very pleasant as were all the employees but it was Kyle especially who seemed to be everywhere; directing traffic, welcoming guests, serving drinks & food, breakfast chef/server/busboy, and was even seen changing lightbulbs!!
The next morning we were checked out with smiles and efficiency.
I live in the United States where we have lots of Holiday Inn Expresses but they don't have staff and customer service like the Portsmouth Gunwharf location!

Run down room with uncomfortable bed overlooking a building/carpark. Staff washed the stairs around 8am so they were slippery for people carrying their "Breakfast in a bag" up to their room. The Covid reduced breakfast really isn't worth bothering with. Only 1 lift is working forcing people to the stairs. The cheap parking is about the best part. Best to arrive off peak as the queue to get into the carpark can be massive! - Also there is along queue system to get into the shopping/quays area this also takes time.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean, warm and well presented. The bed was very comfortable too. The room also came with a few handy extras like an ironing board & hair dryer. The bathroom was very clean too, however it could do with some air freshener as my girlfriend dropped a mean loaf and I couldn't use the loo for 30 minutes. Other than that, it was all very good.

This hotel is ideal for both the designer shopping area and also for Portsmouth Historic Harbour.
Parking is in the shopping centre car park and refreshingly, was free of charge if you are staying in the hotel.
The guy working in reception was very friendly and helpful.
Our room was clean although it could have done with a paint.
Breakfast was preordered and ready to collect at a predetermined time. This worked very well.
The location is great with plenty of shopping and restaurants nearby.
I will stay here again.

I’m not a negative person, nor am I a Karen but I came here for my birthday with my boyfriend and well, here goes 🙈 I wasn’t impressed…

Great location- a 1min walk to pubs, clubs, restaurants, casino, shopping & tourist sights at the harbour.

Reception staff (only staff we saw the entire time we stayed) friendly, happy & helpful.

From walking in room seemed ok, we dropped off our bags and went out for dinner but upon walking back in the room filled with the smell of sewage coming from the bathroom plug holes, but was so late we just collapsed in bed.
Bathroom in general not very clean with a build up of un-cleaned limescale around taps/shower, pubic hair in shower 🤢

Stain on base/side of bed, chair and carpet beside it

Window didn’t open so couldn’t get fresh air into the room

We had a ‘Double’ room- the small double bed was more like a large single bed

There’s a kettle in the room but if you want water to fill it you need to go down the hall and buy a bottle of water from a machine as there’s no bottle of water or fridge in the room

Only meal we ate in the hotel was breakfast and again wasn’t a clean area, nor was all ‘hot’ food kept warm, with sausages put out on just a plate to go cold, cutlery dirty, no a great choice of food, only egg available is scrambled, coffee is from a help yourself machine and tastes vile. Tables were not cleaned even tho there were lots of empty tables they all had leftover/finished food plates on them.

All round an ok place to stay for 1 night of getting on the drink and needing a good location place to crash as it’s on the door step so no taxis required at the end of the night, but would not recommend this place for couples to have a nice weekend away, nor would I recommend it for families with children.

The high price per night is most definitely because of its location and nothing more

Good location if you want Gunwharf Quays, but be aware that the hotel has been fenced off from the Quays and you may have to queue to get in. We liked this hotel previously for its location, but it is still only as average and overpriced as when we last stayed. Unfortunately, this time we booked at the last minute through Booking.com, and not the hotel's own website, as we normally do. We booked a 'double' room, from the choice on the website of 'double' or 'twin'. When we checked in at 4 pm we were given the key to a twin room. When we said there had been a mistake, we were told by the friendly young man at reception that our booking was for a 'standard' room, and that meant that if a double room wasn't available, which it wasn't, we had to accept a twin. We said that this was unacceptable to us and asked for our money that we'd just paid to be refunded so that we could try elsewhere. The young man then told us that he didn't have the authority to issue a refund and that there was no managers available to speak to. The best he could offer us was the reception managers email address. When we said we had no time or ability to email anybody and would have to accept the twin room he simply shrugged and said there was nothing he could do, but admitted that they had had quite a few unhappy customers who had booked using Booking.com. All in all a very upsetting and unsatisfactory experience for our first night away from home this year

Ideally suited for visits to the Historic Dockyard and D-Day exhibition. Staff were pleasant and helpful. The breakfast was excellent. I'd give the restaurants that give a discount on production of key a miss as there are good pubs near the dockyard that serve good meals that are cheaper, hotter and more filling. Parking was good value in the underground carpark - first day free, and then £2 per day. Good transport links via ferry across to Gosport at a reasonable price; Good bus services to local area from the nearby transport hub.

You follow the sign for the car park. You park, walk up the stairs to the shopping centre and the hotel is a 2 minute walk. If you use a satnav or Waze and put in postcode it’s all very easy. You get free 24 hours and £2 a day after that. The hotel validates your ticket and gives you a discount card for some of the shops and restaurants. The hotel entrance is through a walkway but it is well signposted. Have a wonderful time.
