The original Queens Hotel was known as Southsea House and was built by the architect Augustus Livesay in 1861. It was then a large private house owned by Sir John and Lady Morris. The house was situated in an almost identical position to the front half of the existing hotel but was at that time surrounded by woodland – Stone Woods – and the Royal Albert Yacht Club. In 1865, it was transformed into one of the first hotels in Southsea by William Kemp Junior and became known as The Queens Hotel. In 1902, plans for a new hotel were submitted by the owner, G. H. King, after a fire sadly swept through the original building the year before. Designed by architect T. W. Cutler in 1903, the new hotel was rebuilt in the Edwardian baroque style in brown terracotta. This splendid, grade II listed building still stands today boasting outstanding views across the Solent and Southsea Common.

Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.

The Queens Hotel enjoys a prime location favored by guests for its proximity to local attractions and scenic seafront views. While the rooms are often described as clean and comfortable with picturesque views, some guests feel that certain rooms are cramped and dated. Opinions on value are divided; some consider the pricing reasonable, while others find additional charges for services and breakfast to be excessive.
The hotel's atmosphere and decor receive high marks for style and luxury, and while the service is generally commended for being friendly and professional, occasional reports of slow service surface. Cleanliness is a strong suit, as many travelers appreciate the well-kept premises. The hotel's amenities are frequently celebrated, particularly the dining options and attentive service, though not without some minor critiques regarding room service and decor.

We enjoyed a very lovely afternoon at the Queens on a very quiet Tuesday afternoon.
Firstly their COVID measures are reassuring with full trace check in and plenty of sanitiser available.
The afternoon tea came on 2 very grand cakes stands (for 4 of us) and provided us with more than plenty of food!
Sandwiches were fresh and well filled, the scones were still warm and they were very happy to accommodate a request for plain scones when asked.
And the cakes were an extremely generous selection including brownie, macaroon, tart and carrot cake.
And to add to our enjoyment a complimentary glass of mimosa included as well!
All the staff we met were very friendly and professional.
I have had many afternoon teas and I can only praise the Queens for their fabulous offering. Such excellent value for money, I will definitely be returning!

I would recommend everything about this hotel, from the polite, helpful & friendly staff to the comfortable rooms (corridors designed to look like black and white photos with dashes of colour - so stylish! - and excellent food. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious, with fantastic wait staff who couldn't do enough to make our experience comfortable and enjoyable. The hotel's location is also absolutely perfect as it's just across the road from big green open space leading to the seaside for a lovely long coastal walk. Will definitely be staying here again.

From the moment you walk into this hotel you know it’s special. From the beautiful external architecture from the 1900’s, to the high ceilings and luxury finishes of the reception, bar and dining areas. It’s a proper old school hotel.
The staff are all really friendly, welcoming and helpful. From the reception staff, to the bar and restaurant staff, you can tell they all genuinely care about the people staying at the hotel. Special shout out to the absolutely superb restaurant staff who waited on us on the evenings of 23 and 25 Sep.
The food was superb. Breakfast is a full English, or a full vegan, or a couple of other options plus cereals, toast etc. And for evening choices I highly recommend the pate followed by the mouth watering steak.
I stayed in room 128, one of the recently refurbished ones. It’s a superior double large sea view. And it’s a lovely room. Very spacious with a comfortable bed and very quiet at night too (though on my third night I think I have louder neighbours in 127!!). The bathroom is huge with a dressing table and walk in shower. Luxurious. There is a balcony too, more of that below.
The two bits of constructive feedback are:
A) The balcony is huge. But it’s a very weird shared balcony, with room 127 having access at the other end. I’ve never seen a shared balcony with strangers before!
I suggest a partition wall be put up to make things much more private. Ok nobody will walk along and nose into the others balcony doors, but it’s possible.
In addition, at either end of the 128/127 shared balcony is one window to another room. So I suggest partitions at either end to sort of block off those windows a little, so they don’t open their curtains to see people staring back at them.
B) the bathroom window needs a blind of some sort. It’s partly frosted but I’m not sure that’s enough.
Overall a superb hotel i would recommend to all friends and family. 👍

We had 6 rooms over last weekend, all couples thoroughly enjoyed - especially due to the staff and atmosphere in the Dukes bar, the hotel was so busy with private events on both evenings, all very glamorous guests and enjoyed soaking up the pre dinner atmosphere. The lobby and bar were decorated beautifully for Xmas and we did take a peak at the private function rooms - amazing! The staff were exceptional with their service and good nature. Rooms were updated, clean and comfy - water pressure not great on third floor and heating extras needed in a couple which was sorted quickly (it was a freezing weekend). Be aware of rooms near to the internal corridor doors if you like a lie in! We didn’t eat in the hotel as there were so many restaurants nearby, so can’t review dining. Very happy with our stay and would definitely return.

My husband and I have our last night at this lovely hotel! The staff go far and beyond to help you and are so polite. The standard double sea view room is nice lovely views of the sea from the room and bathroom. I personally think the room needs a bit of updating but it was clean and lots of hot running water. Lovely long and deep bath. Breakfast was superb , breakfast staff very attentive. We have 2 nights here and will definitely be back! Maybe upgrade to a superior double next time. I would suggest one thing that they should put bottled water in the rooms as the cold tap isn't that cold so not good for drinking. Can't fault this hotel bed is really comfy too!! Highly recommended.

Stayed 2 nights in Superior Room 229 with my partner. Clean and immaculate with all the usual handy bits such as safe, fridge, hairdryer and iron. Room felt a little compact but other than that the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was spacious and I loved the overall decor. Bath towels were about thickest I have come across which was great. One small suggestion is for the hotel to provide hooks on the bathroom door to hang them on as they were too big for the radiator.
Breakfast was fine although a bit confusing as the menu quoted individual prices depending on your choice of cooked food even though reception charged a flat £11.50. The waiting staff asked what we would like to drink but did not volunteer juice, nor did they offer extra toast and jam which was available when requested. They were nevertheless friendly and polite, and the same applied to the staff at reception.
Loved the location and would be happy to revisit.

We have stayed at the Queens Hotel at least once a year for the past 20 years. This year we were in one of the newly refurbished seaview rooms on them 1st floor. Overall it is much better. The rooms have been laid out to provide a feeling of space, perhaps with the loss of a little storage space, although there is plenty for a few days' stay. The bathroom is much more spacious and airy, with two basins. My only complaint is the shower, which has a fixed overhead shower head. I find these difficult if not washing one's hair and not terribly good at rinsing everywhere. The shower is in the bathtub, which isn't unusual. Due to Covid 19 there were restrictions on room cleaning, which we were aware of before we arrived. Overall a good improvement.

I have just returned from a 3 night stay over last weekend.
Check in was fine, staff prompt, courteous and very polite.
The room was a single on the second floor and i was very impressed with the decor and layout. The room was spotless and maintained by housekeeping that way throughout my stay. It had a fridge, which was a godsend, kettle, complimentary tea and coffee and a nice flat screen above the bed. It did get hot due to the warm weather, unfortunately, you couldn't open the window's for fresh air more than an inch and that needs correcting. although there was a fan but its never the same as fresh air. The bed was very comfortable.
I ate out at nights, so, i cannot judge the restaurant and breakfast was at £15 and included a lot of other peoples brats, so that was a no no for me and i gave it a swerve.
The hotel itself is very grand and you can tell that a lot of money has been invested in it and still is and it is good to see.
Furthermore, every time I came in to the hotel and went in or out of my room the staff always greeted me and wished me a good day or good evening.
I have travelled to hotels all over the world and I cannot understand some of the negative reviews on here regarding this hotel. its nonsense from what i can see.
So, My verdict : Highly recommended and I would certainly stay here again.

Recently stayed at queens hotel Portsmouth for a weekend trip with family. The hotel itself is lovely building and great location but the hotel has a heating problem, was overwhelmingly hot, and the windows only open a jar and the bedrooms already are suppled with fans and the radiators have signs saying ‘do not adjust heat’. I was unfortunately sick in my room due to the suffocating heat and after paying £462.00 for the room only that didn’t include breakfast, I was charged a further £200 unauthorised to my card for damages due to being sick in the bedroom. I was told that I signed a copy of this when checking into the hotel which I wasn’t made aware of at the time and then told that the carpet had to be replaced which I fought was a bit far fetched. I would willingly pay a cleaning fee but to say the carpet had to be replaced is ridiculous. I contacted the hotel asking twice for a copy of the document that I signed which I am still awaiting the hotel to send me since august. The hotel replied that the £200 they charged me was far less than what I cost them. I feel like I have been exploited and especially in times such as the current pandemic.
I’m not the only person to have stayed in queens to complain about your heating problem, this is something the hotel should look into getting fixed and also when people are checking into your hotel you should make them aware as to what they are signing.
Safe to say I will not be returning to queens hotel.
