I booked a suite here for a short break but the following day got the flu and was unable to go. The landlady said they had a 48hr cancellation policy and I would be charged £180 for the room, in spite of being sick and having only booked less than 24 hours ago. What a horrid thing to do, they...

Thank you Bumblebumb for your review, which I'm sure many reading will understand that cancellation policies are put in place to "not profit from someone's misfortune" but to protect small businesses. May I suggest next time you book any hotel in the world that you see their cancellation policy first, as I recently found out that many London hotels have...

We've stayed at the Lion several times. We were disappointed this time by the lack of details which have always made our stay special and enjoyable. Room service has disappeared for complimentary tea & coffee - the sort of thing which makes being on a break just that - and is replaced by a cheap white plastic travel kettle and...

We ate in the restuarant and stayed overnight, an experiance not to be recommended or repeated. It could be a gem but only if someone takes on site responsibility and cares a bit more about the customer. The positives - the staff were friendly and tried. The negatives - over priced bar and restuarant, pokey room lacking in facilities, the...

I don't live too far from Winchcombe so have been to various pubs and restaurants in the town. However, this was my first visit to The Lion on North Street. It's absolutely lovely, one of those places that you walk into and immediately feel comfortable and valued as a customer. The service was quick, efficient and friendly. We were all...

I normally look at reviews before booking anywhere, but my husband booked it as it was to have an evening out with friends who live in Winchcombe, big mistake! First impressions of our £140 room were it was very small, dark, dingy and 2 single beds when we booked a double, with just some coat knobs to hang clothes. We...

Paid for a 'superior' room that was small, noisy & had a broken window & bedside light. No hot water one night/day. Shower temperamental & leaked. Food mediocre. Couple of nice staff but mostly service not very good & slow. Very quaint & had potential to be superb although parking could be a problem Not having a TV was actually...

Popped in for a quick lunch after our walk. Menu looked interesting if overpriced. We chose crab sanwiches and at £7.95 expcted more than just smear of crab in a massive roll. We spent ent them back and they came back with more crab. Still not generous but just about acceptable. This was accompanied by an apology, saying that it...

We stayed for just one night and unfortunately did not need to eat in the restaurant but friends tell us it is very good and certainly we liked the look of the menu. Everyone was very friendly and could not have been more helpful. The barman even lent me his cufflinks as I had left mine at home! Our room...

We arrived at the Lion Inn on Friday evening - we were nearly an hour late at 9pm after a badly timed 20 mile walk and were worried we'd have missed the restaurant altogether. We were met by the warmest of welcomes and were told to take a few minutes R&R in our room before coming down to dinner -...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lion Inn started life as a coaching inn in the 15th Century. Over the years it has gone through many changes and played an important role in the village and surrounding areas; providing food, drink and accommodation for both people and horses, in a variety of guises. Having fallen in love with the building, Annie Fox-Hamilton took over ownership of the Lion in October 2011 and spent six months on a major renovation of the building and grounds. We were determined not to lose any of the inn’s original quirky charm; we unearthed quite a lot more than we had anticipated such as Minnie Mouse – the vintage wall painting in Room 1 we couldn’t bear to lose. The Lion has a bar, snug, restaurant, garden (ideal for alfresco dining), 6 double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a mini suite. All have extremely comfortable beds, their own individual character and ambiance. ... more   less
