A charming hotel set in beautiful gardens and woodland - ideally located with excellent road links to M4 and M5 motorways. The hotel offers 44 individually furnished bedrooms and suites. There are two spacious lounges plus a choice of dining. The elegant Westonbirt Restaurant offers a fine selection of dishes utilising seasonal and local produce wherever possible. The informal menus in Jack Hare's are also seasonal and are served in traditional pub surroundings.

The Hare and Hounds Hotel is often celebrated for its quintessential Cotswolds charm and attentive service, offering a welcoming atmosphere and well-maintained amenities. While its prime location is ideal for exploring local attractions, some guests have noted disturbances from road noise and less-than-ideal soundproofing.
Although the hotel's cleanliness and professional staff earn high marks, the value proposition is occasionally questioned due to the pricing of meals and accommodations.

Stayed in"Lime" accessable room, excellent covid safety measures in place, prompt housekeeping when extra pillows, milk etc requested and this was left outside room. Best to book for dinner or eat in bar, food excellent at dinner and breakfast.
Worst bits were no access to patio area that comes with the room as large step down from patio doors onto loose stone making it definately not accessable. Carpet in room was rough, ridged, hard and made of rope like texture and was extremely uncomfortable under foot. Waiters at dinner and breakfast did`nt give you time to get seated before they were bombarding you for your order. With some improvements hotel could be something special. Would possibly visit again if price was right.

We had a fantastic mini break, using hotel as a base to explore attractions in Cotswolds (need to book these in advance). Delighted that we chose Hare and Hounds as they are taking Covid Care of both staff and visitors. Welcome letter suggests you ask for anything they have removed from rooms (eg slippers), or miss in that rooms don't have daily Housekeeping (eg fresh milk, or check of chemicals level in hot tub). All requests and queries very well handled by staff and manager; staff very helpful.
Gamekeepers (room 49) really is a wonderful characterful suite, obviously designed with bride in mind for weddings (eg own ironing room). See website for photos ! Also nice little kitchen area with sink, good fridge, kettle in addition to Nespresso machine; no cooking facilities. Very private suite, no noise from neighbouring room, little noise from hotel road that passes (note: car parking near, not adjacent), some noise from hotel staff nearby mid morning.
HOT TUB is dedicated and secluded - felt better than sharing facilities in a spa !!
Food was much enjoyed in main restaurant (need to book) at very well spaced tables. Waiting staff did not wear masks (their choice), but they sanitise on every trip and cleaned chairs / changed cloths between customers. Included breakfast has wide menu (great food), supper menu smaller (wide range prices, food recommended) and may change daily. Recommended.
Gamekeepers Suite needs an urgent refurbish, particularly the "sisal" carpet in bedroom (torn at foot of bed and uncomfy underfoot) and issues with shower water flooding out onto corridor carpet. We would have rated only 4 star based on this but both reception and manager took care to reassure that refurbish should be soon.

+1
We stayed for 2 nights as a family with 2 children. The room (No. 1) was a really good size: actually two individual bedrooms with a shared bathroom so there was loads of space. Bathroom was great, very well kept and with a strong shower. It was not 5* luxury but it was clean and comfortable.
We chose the Dinner Bed and Breakfast offer which I thought was an excellent deal especially as it saves you having to drive to and from another location for dinner. Food overall was good with a nice range of options - one or two of the dishes might have been a bit bland but there were a lot to choose from. One dinner dish was a whole Scottish Grouse which I thought was amazing value! The only minor criticism I have was that every time we ordered poached eggs it was a bit of a disaster, which was a shame as the rest of the food seemed well prepared. For some reason they were not able to poach eggs properly. But this was a minor quibble really.
All the staff were very good, friendly and efficient, especially the restaurant staff at breakfast and dinner.
I'd recommend the Afternoon tea. Again very reasonably priced and nicely prepared.
The hotel is well located for a number of local Cotswolds attractions and has a very nice lawn outside to stroll around. We don't have dogs but we noticed it was a dog friendly hotel, with even an outdoor 'Dog Wash' signposted.
All in all a very nice stay and would recommend, but maybe din't order poached eggs!

We stayed Sunday on a special deal that included a 3 course Sunday lunch, newspaper and breakfast to celebrate my birthday. I booked directly and asked if white meat (e.g chicken or turkey) was available for the roast. I was put through to the restaurant manager who said if I put in a request they could accommodate which I thought was nice. Unfortunately the message didn't get passed on by the receptionist and the kitchen was unaware at our meal...and the foreign waitress (with a hoop through her nose) was very rude and argumentative telling me that pork was white meat and so the kitchen didn't need to supply me with anything else. After explaining that pork is actually red meat (while she continued to argue for a few minutes, screwing up her face and telling me I was wrong) I was told I could have chicken but I'd have to wait 25mins for it to be cooked. So not a good start!! The restaurant manager eventually came over and apologised and offered us a free drink.
The hotel is tastefully decorated with several seating areas to read and chill out. The bar area does get noisy and very busy at peak time but Sunday evening it's deserted. Please be aware that the hotel is on a busy road outside of Tetbury so if you wanted to go elsewhere it would require a car journey.
Our room (20) was at the back of the hotel so quieter, overlooking the garden. The only downside was how hot the room and hotel in general was; every radiator was on full blast which was really unnecessary! Not only must their heating bill be massive, but it's not great for the environment either.
Westonbirt Arboretum is just next door and Tetbury, with its pretty old buildings and boutique shops is only a 10min drive away so a good location if you wanted to explore this part of the Cotswolds.

Response from Cotswoldinns, General Manager at Hare and Hounds Hotel
Responded 18 Feb 2020
Dear SH-J1979, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us your feedback, it really is much appreciated. While I was pleased to see you enjoyed most of your stay I was somewhat disappointed to see that we have let ourselves down during your dining experience. I have personally spoken with the member of team you mentioned and we apologise for the way she came across. We have discussed how to improve going forward to ensure this level of service does not happen again. I wish you a belated happy birthday and I hope the Hare & Hounds Hotel have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future. Kind regards, Quintin Fisher, General Manager

Having a voucher for any of the six hotels in the ‘Cotswolds Inns and Hotels’ group, we liked the look of this one because it was not in a town centre or right on top of a busy street or road. We were not disappointed, particularly when given a room in the rear quarters (although rooms at the front might find fast traffic on the main disturbing). The room was extremely spacious with a very large double bed that was actually a bit hard for our tastes, but the general comfort and the well-appointed bathroom (Moulton Brown adding a nice touch) more than made up for that. Car parking immediately to the rear was very handy.
The Covid19 measures were very well explained and checking in (and checking out) was an easy process. But, having gone to all that trouble, it was rather disturbing to find bar and restaurant staff without face covering of any kind while serving food and drink, and talking to you at the same time.
With dinner booking limited because of social distancing in the dining room, we had to eat in the bar on the first night. It was surprising to find this was exactly the same menu as the restaurant. Given the current restrictions, that is perhaps understandable; less so, having to pay the same price without the restaurant trappings and sitting uncomfortably at a table in the bar. The food on both nights was good – but no more than that and perhaps below the anticipated level you might expect in an establishment with some equally classy prices. The rice with the Thai curry, for example, was stodgy. The lamb dish (mash and greens) was served in a bowl and completely without imagination, although the lamb tender and tasty. Breakfast was excellent, the poached eggs being perfect (always a good test!).
The lounge and the library were delightful havens, adding to what, overall, was a very pleasant stay. But not the 5 Trip Advisor rating you might expect .

We checked in at lunchtime with a receptionist who was polite but quite cold and matter of fact. We took afternoon tea, it was served with no butter, then cold crumpets. Dinner was good, but forgot my tea. Coffee was served whilst we were still eating.
This is a nice hotel, the road in front can be a little noisy But rooms were well equipped. Just need to get the service right for 5 stars, servers just need more attention to detail.
Loved the library dining room is smashing breakfast was poor, the yogurt was warm the porridge was made with water and the pancakes returned not properly cooked.
So disappointed.

A firm favourite of ours for Sunday lunch.
The buildin is delightful and well maintained.
The restaurant is exquisite and the staff, overseen by Ian, the manager, courteous and efficient.
The food is good and sensibly priced. I am impressed that the cheese course, unlike may other places, is not subject to a supplement.
The tables are well spaced and overall, noise levels are low.
As we only go for lunch I cannot comment on this hotel's other services.

A beautiful hotel but unfortunately there was no evidence of any care by the staff to protect each other or their customers from Covid. On arrival we were greeted by quite young reception staff who were very unlikely to have had two covid vaccinations and neither of whom were wearing face coverings. This carried on throughout our stay of 3 nights. The dining room was crowded at breakfast and there were no windows open to provide ventilation despite it being August and a fairly warm day. Not one member of the staff we saw wore a mask and although no longer mandatory the government guidelines do state that masks should still be worn in enclosed spaces which are likely to be crowded, when you are with people who you do not know. I contacted the CEO of Fullers who own the hotel prior to writing this review but apart from stating it was up to staff what they did was completely uninterested. Covid cases are alarmingly high at the moment and while many people are double vaccinated there are still plenty of people who are vulnerable, possibly immunosuppressed or haven't yet managed to get two vaccines on board yet. As a health care professional who has been vaccinating since Christmas, I find this attitude very depressing as the delta variant of Covid is extremely infectious and simple measures such as wearing a face covering, sanitising hands, fresh air and keeping your distance helps so much to protect each other. This hotel was also in the middle of nowhere so I would suggest staying in the village of Tetbury where you have a good choice of restaurants and hotels and where everyone seemed to be taking a more cautious approach. Taxi's are very difficult to get from the Hare & Hounds as there are only two taxi companies so unless you want to drive or eat in the hotel every night it is not ideal.

Unfortunately, due to staff shortages, the Beaufort restaurant was closed in the evenings for the duration of our stay. Evening meals were served in Jack Hare's bar instead, with a limited and unchanged menu being offered to hotel residents. The bar area lacked atmosphere and the food and service was not as good as we had expected and had enjoyed in the Beaufort restaurant on previous visits. The hotel were very busy hosting weddings throughout - not surprising that these were given priority over hotel guests. Hospitality staffing is a problem throughout The Cotswolds, but its disappointing when it impacts a stay that we had been looking forward to for some time. Best to check the situation before you book, otherwise you could also be disappointed. The limited numbers of young staff tried hard and did their best, but...! Don't know if this issue affects other hotels on The Cotswolds Inn group. We will think again before booking another stay.

Stayed here for 3 days en route to Devon - a fabulous setting just 10mins drive from the town of Tetbury. Covid precautions were still in place, however did not lessen the fabulous customer service experience.
The staff were incredibly professional, efficient, friendly with incredible interpersonal skills, particulary the team in the bar & dining room. Housekeeping chap was incredibly friendly & spoke highly of his experience working at this hotel
We were allocated a lovely room next door to the laundry, which in the daytime can be quite noisy. As we had our 5m old puppy with us, who does nap in the day we asked to be moved
.......situation handled wirh the utmost good manners & within 15mins we were in our new room - can't ask for any more than that.
The food was great, the gin was greater & a brilliant choice of fine wines served up with a chat, a smile & a particularly high standard of attention to detail.
Well done to the entire team offering a fantastic holiday experience to us at a particularly diffficult time for the hotel industry.
Thank you
( my husband is a retired training manager for Marriott Hotel Group so we can be quite critical & have high expectations, however, nothing here to criticise at all )

We were in a front double rooms and minor background noise from the road didn’t bother us.
If sensitive , suggest you request a room at the rear.
We enjoyed our stay here.
We didn’t take a dog so but sure but did see dogs in the breakfast room so I Don’t think they have to stay in the room
