We have just returned from a pleasant stay at The Bear. It was our first visit to a hotel since February and we realised that there would be some differences to our previous visits to this hotel due to Covid safety precautions. On arrival we sat in the fabulous outside seating area and enjoyed a lovely lunch. Customers are required to purchase drinks, order food and pay at the Outdoor pavillion bar. Food is brought to your table when it is ready. It was not busy and one way systems and entrances/exits are clearly marked. Customers using the hotel are asked to sanitize hands and record their contact details on entry to the garden. Tables are well spaced and there is a good atmosphere. Staff clean tables between customers. To protect staff, customers need to be advised not to lean on the bar when ordering food drinks. The bar needs to stick more quality real ales rather than mainly lagers. The country house (additional building) is being refurbished. We had a lovely room(very good room) on the 2nd floor with a view of Rodborough common. Luxury towels and toiletries were in the bathroom. Tea and coffee making facilities were good. The rooms were not serviced during our stay but replacement towels, toilet rolls and tea and coffee replenishments could be requested if required. We ate breakfast and dinner on the restaurant. The dinner service on the first evening was disappointing but this improved on the second two days. Breakfast service was good each day. The menu has changed since Fullers have taken over and the dinner is no longer a fine dining experience. There were some shortages of wine and menu items due to COVID restrictions and stock control due to only recently reopening. On the first evening I had a lovely sticky toffee pudding but on the second evening they had run out and I was given a pudding of inferior quality and was not advised that they had run out of the original pudding. Other than that, we enjoyed our meals but they were not the same as those enjoyed in previous years when the chefs were able to design their own bespoke menus. The area is lovely for country walks or as a base for accessing other areas of the Cotswolds. There is a lovely pub called the Black Horse in Amberley to get a drink or meal whilst exploring the expansive two commons. ( Minchinhampton or Rodborough). We will return and look forward to seeing how it improves post-COVID.

This was a 'pit stop' stay for us on our way from the Costwolds to Bath on a weeks stay-cation, we actually wasn't expecting too much as we'd booked the stay on a B&B plus dinner deal, but it turned out to be our favourite Hotel of our trip!
As soon as we arrived on a hot September day, we felt instantly relaxed, we had come from a 3 night stay in a beautiful private barn which unfortunately lacked outdoor facilities, but The Bear made up for that in abundance, with it's stunning (very large) garden, which was beautifully decked out with lovely Rattan table and chairs and on the green, there was an array of large deckchairs and sofas, to spend the afternoon lazing with a drink and a book....bliss! We had a nice light lunch which we ordered from the outdoor bar before checking in, Social distancing being observed really well both in and out of the Hotel and the reception staff were friendly, helpful and quick at getting us checked in so we could head up to our room in the main building. First impressions were very good, this Hotel is oldie worldy with so much charm, but they have also given it a slightly modern/updated edge, without being too plush. I was so impressed with all the little rooms dotted here and there, where you could sit in peace and quiet and enjoy a drink or just a read. We were pleasantly surprised to find we had a large 4 poster bed in our room, a nice sized bathroom which was well decorated, clean and fresh and divine Bramley toiletries in full size, which was really impressive, the shower was fantastic, nice and powerful. We then headed back down to the garden to take advantage of the surroundings and the beautiful weather for a couple of hours before dinner.
Our meal was booked in the Hotel restaurant and our server, a lovely lady named Cara really took care of us, particularly when it came to my allergies. The restaurant setting is beautiful, with gorgeous views and the room itself was comfortable and modern. Our meals were excellent, I really enjoyed my main of Cornish loin of hake which was cooked to perfection and my husband said his Valrhona Caramelia chocolate was one of the best deserts he's ever had! After dinner we sat in the very pretty courtyard for a couple of drinks.
The bed was huge and so comfortable and the drapes were thick and heavy which allowed for a nice dark room with uninterrupted sleep. We had breakfast the next morning back in the hotel restaurant, I had the full English which was just OK and nothing special unfortunately, but my husband really enjoyed his Eggs Benedict. We had a very welcome late checkout of 12pm and once we were all paid up, went back out to their garden for another hour of reading and relaxation before heading on to our next destination.
We were really sorry to leave The Bear, it was such an unexpectedly perfect break and we would not only highly recommend it, but are planning another trip there for longer next time. Keep up the Good work Bear!

This is our third visit to this hotel and on this occasion we booked the “Sublime Sunday” offer of b&b plus a three course Sunday roast which I thought was pretty good value @£133 although drinks at the bar are quite expensive here, £5 for a local IPA and £11 for a large white wine (Sauv Blanc). The bar has some nice and cosy seating areas and is a really nice place to relax before or after eating.
The meal and service was second to none and the Library room restaurant is a lovely place to sit and enjoy your dinner with great views.
Our double room situated on the third floor of the main hotel was a good size and very comfortable and being a corner room had excellent double aspect views of the local scenery. The room had tea and coffee making facilities, a safe, iron & ironing board and plenty of toiletries in the en-suite bathroom. The only minor problem in our room was that the TV did not have any signal but this didn’t really bother us as we didn’t intend on watching tele anyway.
We took our breakfast in the room next morning (£5 tray charge applies) and this was delivered promptly at 09:30 as requested. The breakfast was very good, although no hot or cold drinks were provided so assume that you need to request these separately.
We really enjoy staying at this Cotswold Inn hotel and no doubt will return again in the future, the staff are very attentive and provided exceptional service throughout our stay. Drinks are on the pricey side but in-line with what you expect to pay at other similar establishments.

My husband and I stopped here overnight to break up a long journey down south. It was a lovely stopover in a clean and tidy hotel where the staff were friendly and polite. We took our dog who was made most welcome, and the location was fantastic for both an evening and early morning walk over the common. The views from here were fantastic. We spent the evening in the dog friendly bar and enjoyed a good meal and a pint. Before our stay I had seen poor reviews regarding the bar meals but needn't have worried. Yes the menu was simple and traditionally what could be classed as 'pub grub', but it was filling, tasty and just right for us. The only fault that I would have was that you cant book a table in the bar and it did get busy later on in the evening. We did personally get a table, but I as a guest of the hotel, I would have felt a bit put out if I had turned up for food and been unable to get seating. This may be something the hotel should consider if encouraging dog owners to stay as you are able to book in the main dining area but cant take dogs in there. Breakfast for dog owners and their pets is available in a separate room to other diners. We were more than happy with this, it was cosy and comfortable and our dog was happy as he got his own sausage! Overall, a successful and enjoyable stay.

Yay! The Bear is open again. It has been given a deep clean, lots of hand-sanitiser in place, and a one-way system marked out on the floor, that I kept getting wrong (maybe just me!). The rooms are comfortable, individually decorated, stocked with tea and coffee making facilities and in the bathrooms are the fluffiest towels ever! Our breakfast was delicious, there’s a good choice of tempting options – and with a complimentary ‘welcome back’ glass of prosecco in the Bear Bar the night before, our family really enjoyed our stay.

the positives first - beautiful setting, staff generally attentive on a busy afternoon, certainly all polite.
Looking at the menu ahead of our visit, I was concerned about how un-interesting the vegan options would be (lots of simple sounding salads), and frankly some of the most expensive vegan food that I had ever seen. Unfortunately, my concerns were realised. Even before we'd decided what to order, we queried the menu key with pb (plant based), though many dishes were vg (unlabelled in the key) and v (labelled vegetarian). Waitress helpfully went to the kitchen to check and seemed assured by the chefs that they were one and the same. We were also assured that the butternut Wellington was vegan, after another waitress (also polite) checked for us. We ordered one of those and the Thai curry. It came out with a yorkie (milk and egg!) And was full of feta or another goats cheese. Thank christ I didn't tuck in before inspecting it. Both the roast and the curry were simply never worth £14 and £15.50, that price needs to be either an absolute portion or exquisite quality. This was neither, falling well short on both accounts. The £9.00 vegan pud that my partner ordered out of hunger had us both laughing at its size and sad looking complexion. Three tastless wafers and a few raspberries with coconut cream. Hope if we return to see clearer labelling, better communication of allergens/diets, and prices better reflective of quality/portion sizes. Perhaps a better venue for drinks and comfortable seating

Arrived and was promptly checked in by lovely reception staff and given directions to our room which was average sized but decent and superficially clean. Nice touches with the dog bed and blanket and dog bowl (even if not clean on closer inspection but just needed washing out in sink). Big comfy beds and slept well.
Went for early dinner drinks on terrace outside which was lovely and staff were very attentive out there and even more dog friendly giving out treats.
We Booked in for food at 7pm and sat in common room with our dog as bar was completely empty and another couple with dog were also in common room. Order was taken promptly and pea soup arrived for starters in good time. The soup was delicious and obviously homemade. Unfortunately we were then forgotten about completely despite waitresses coming in to see to other table in same room and left with no drinks and no main course in sight. My husband went to find someone and reluctantly someone came over to take our drinks order but did not clear away plates or empty glasses and said she would ask someone about our mains. 20 minutes later (1 hour and 15 mins after our starters) our mains arrived. Yet again, unfortunately the steak was extremely grisly and not worth anything near 28.00 and the salmon had been frozen and served with peas out of a can and chopped bacon. No-one came to ask if things were alright with the meal which they obviously weren't! There was no way we were ordering desert as who knew how long it would take to come. The waitress eventually came to take away our starter bowl and mains and emptys after my husband going back to bar to attract attention. The waitress then did take the salmon off our bill.
Breakfast the following morning was similar to dinner. This time we made sure to attract attention of a waiter from restaurant so we would get our order taken and admittedly this was done promptly. When asking for some apple juice however, we were directed to go and get it ourselves despite him standing in the room with the self service watching me pour it. The full breakfast was okay and eggs done well however there was no offer of toast and so had to request this separately after having eaten most of the breakfast. The hollandaise sauce on the eggs Royale was yet again disappointedly out of a jar or packet and the pastries were still slightly frozen.
Went to reception to settle our bill emailed to us and found out the room next to us had their meals and drinks added to our bill but thanks to the friendly woman on reception this was swiftly rectified.
In summary, nice room with good reception staff but poor, unprofessional/inexperienced waiting staff with overpriced, poor quality food on offer. 4*hotel realistically acting at around a 2*. Will not be returning and has put me off visiting other hotels in the cotswold inn chain!

We stayed at the hotel with our beloved dogs earlier this month. From the outset we were impressed with service and this continued through out our stay. We received welcome emails before travelling, advice on leaving luggage to check in due to room location etc. The staff were lovely - very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is cosy and traditional with beautiful clean spacious rooms. There was a small extra charge for the dogs but that was nothing compared to the joy of being able to have them with us. Food and drink was all delightful and even the dogs got a sausage each for breakfast. Overall a lovely visit on a dark Autumn night and a lovely walk across a blustery common in the morning. Will definitely return!

Due to visit later this month and paid full amount upfront some 3 months ago. Clearly it is not appropriate to visit now and the hotel informs me the restaurant is not always open because of cancellations. However, this hotel will not refund a penny and quote terms and conditions in their defence. They will issue a voucher valid for 6 months only ... how much use is that? This episode shows the penny pinching attitude of this organisation and their lack of concern for their guests. It is appalling and I am tempted to give them a very bad press if there is no change in their disgusting attitude!

Just had a lovely Sunday overnight stay, together with another couple, to celebrate our Ruby wedding anniversary. We booked the ‘Sublime Sunday’ deal which included Sunday lunch with wine. I told them on booking what we were celebrating, and they kindly upgraded our room to a large one in the recently refurbished Country House annexe with a beautiful view over the Stroud valleys. They also gave us a complimentary half bottle of sparkling wine. Staff were young, friendly and efficient. We went straight in for lunch, which was delicious. My only small gripe, which prevents me giving 5 stars, is that on the website the ‘Sublime Sunday’ deal states it includes a 3 course Sunday lunch and a complimentary glass of wine. But when seated, I had to ask what we could have off the menu on our deal. The waiter wasn’t sure, so went to check, and returned to say we could have up to £43 per room/couple for food, and £10 per room for drinks. The roast dinners were £17 each, the desserts £7 or £8 each, so you can see the price didn’t even cover 2 courses, let alone 3, and I don’t think there was a glass of wine for £5, so we ordered one of the cheaper bottles of white at £24, plus one soft drink for a non drinker. So we did have extra charges which we had not anticipated. It should be clearly stated on the website. As we were staying the night, and there’s not much else in the area, we had to get something to eat in the evening in the bar. We chose a ‘sharing’ baked Brie with sourdough toast and salad, plus 2 portions of chips, and that was sufficient for the 4 of us, and was very tasty. The bed was comfy, we slept well. I liked the touch of deckchairs and tables outside the Country House, from which to relax and enjoy the view, even though we didn’t use them. Breakfast was a highlight, delicious with a good choice of hot food, freshly cooked to order, and a good continental buffet. Toast was proper bread, not sliced. Good quality coffee, offers of more drinks, toast etc. All in all, an excellent break at a good price, with just that one proviso. I would certainly go again.
