We’re a bit of a rare breed amongst boutique hotels in the Cotswolds. Our thinking is, if you’ve got it, flaunt it. Nestled very nicely in the ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’ village of Painswick, our picture-perfect Palladian house is your new home-from-home. Boasting roaring fires, sink-into-me sofas and seventeen bedrooms where peaceful slumber beckons, we’re the perfect place for a snug escape in the countryside.

The Painswick Hotel emerges as a boutique establishment with a mixed bag of feedback on its value – some guests question the cost, while others are enamored enough to plan return visits. Luxurious amenities garner praise, including the plush rooms and gourmet dining, set amidst a charming atmosphere with cozy touches that enchant many visitors. While service is often lauded for its professionalism, it can falter when the hotel bustles. Most find the rooms comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, though occasional maintenance issues surface. Its prime location is a hit for exploring the area, and the hotel's cleanliness consistently impresses.

We have just returned from a blissful 2 nights at the Painswick. We were blessed with the most heavenly weather which meant we were able to see both The Cotswolds and the hotel in all their glory.
Our room was on the third floor and although classified as a small room we found it perfectly acceptable with a large bathroom, extremely comfy bed, air conditioning and fabulous views out over the garden and valley below. We were even able to have breakfast outside, which for this time of the year was a huge bonus.
The food was exceptional and all the staff with just one exception made us feel extremely welcome.
Henry did make us feel rather uncomfortable on two occasions, the first was after a very long hot walk we were relaxing in the comfy lounger in the garden and a very nice waiter advised us to move into the shade if we wanted to have a nap, so he sanitised another lounger and we nodded off for about an hour.
We then decided to have a wander round the village to walk off our delicious afternoon tea and when we came back we sat at the front of the lawn to admire the view once more. Henry then came over and asked that we didn’t keep moving around as chairs had to be deep cleaned each time.
The second occasion he made us feel unwelcome was at dinner.
Initially I had only booked dinner for the first night but on driving through the village we noticed there was absolutely nowhere else to eat so on check in a very nice man said absolutely no problem we could book for 8pm on the second night.
When we arrived for dinner Henry told us there had been a mix up and no table had been booked but they had moved things around and managed to find us a table, something we did not need to be made aware of as it made us feel uncomfortable and we were being intrusive.
I would however definitely recommend this hotel, in fact we already have! A real little quirky gem in a quiet village with the most excellent chef.

My boyfriend and I stayed and dined at the painswick on the back of a recommendation and we weren’t disappointed!

It’s set in an idyllic village with gorgeous surrounds for those who enjoy exploring the great outdoors.

The food was incredible and service matched!

The room we stayed in was quite small (there was a booking mix up) but immaculate and nice touches such as radio playing when we arrived and hand made treats.

We are looking forward to our next visit.

We booked in two weeks ago as part of a birthday celebration and took advantage of a winter package that included a one nights stay with a treatment and evening meal.

On arrival, we were upgraded to the most beautiful room with a wood burner which was just wonderful. I had arranged a few surprises for my partner which were all executed to perfection.

Thank you to everyone at the Painswick for a great stay especially Vesna who was amazing.

We will be back again soon!

What a delightful little place. We arrived for a 3 night stay at the Painswick with our 15month old. Having stayed at Barnsley House for a couples weekend before we had a rough sense of what the place might be like being part of the same collection. The Painswick did not disappoint. We opted for the George Suite which has a nice terrace balcony, lounge area, huge bathroom with free standing bath and rainfall shower. The room was cosy and spacious. One thing to note if travelling with children is that the George Suite is on the second floor so you may find yourself having to carry a pram up and down the stairs. We didn’t find it an issue but worth noting if you are coming with a little one.

Overall the service was very good with staff friendly and attentive throughout. From bar staff, to the room cleaner and waiters and waitresses in the restaurant, real credit to the hotel. There are several lounge areas both inside with log fires and outside with sofa loungers. Despite the place being at full occupancy it never felt busy and has a very relaxed low key vibe. Food was very good from breakfast through to dinner and the Sunday lunch we had. So credit to the chef. Be warn food comes at a price and a beef Wellington for £28 seemed a bit excessive
Service at breakfast was a tad slow, on a few days but my sense is part of that was the team adjusting to new covid set up.
Being quite secluded without facilities like a gym or spa, the Painswick is a place to come and relax and it serves that space well. If you are looking for something a little more lively this probably isn’t for you. Equally being a 20 minute drive to Cheltenham town centre a perfect base to explore the wider area. Great place to recharge and relax.

We have just returned from a wonderful stay at this delightful hotel .
We were struck by the friendly helpful staff who run this lovely property set in the pretty village of Painswick .
We sat on the gorgeous terrace having drinks and an excellent afternoon tea and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. We can’t remember everyone’s names but Jacob and Henry particularly stood out .
Mention must be made of the strict adherence to Covid rules with chairs and tables sanitised as soon as any one vacated them . Staff wore masks at all times but still managed to stay friendly and cheerful.
Our room which was described as medium sized was delightful , spacious and spotlessly clean with a large bathroom and generous supply of REN toiletries .
There was a coffee machine, tea making facilities and delicious home made biscuits .
Dinner and breakfast both excellent . We can’t wait to return !

So the parking is a bit of a nightmare particularly if you are in a rental and don’t know your vehicle. Strange angles and quite tight to walls.
We arrived early with the intention of going to the pub. But delightfully (and rarely on this particular trip) the room was ready at 13.45. Yay.
We unloaded our bags which were disappeared by a charming young men (charming young men are ubiquitous at The Painswick) and checked in. Our room was on the top floor – had I known I’d have extracted a few items rather than sending the poor guy up with 20 kgs of Samsonite.
Down to the lovely bar where we sat in front of the log burner and nibbled a couple of beers and proseccos. Sadly it was another dull afternoon in the Cotswolds so we couldn’t take advantage of the delightful outside spaces (some hardy folk did).
We watched people eating champagne afternoon teas with absolute envy (dinner was booked so no option to enjoy) and were we to return we would definitely indulge in this – looked delightful.
But dinner did not disappoint. Tasty and a wee bit original and well above the pub food experienced in other similarly priced hotels.
A super experience. No hesitation in recommending.

Six friends who have seen the new year in together for over 30 years decided to have a change and go to a nice hotel. We chose the Painswick and it was the perfect choice. I’ve rarely felt more at ease in a smart hotel. All the staff were brilliant and it really did feel like home from home. Nothing was too much trouble. Evening meals were superb and breakfast choices perfect. The hotel location is idyllic and weather was good enough for some lovely (albeit rather muddy) walks. Room was lacking nothing (except possibly a few more lumens for those of us ageing types who have difficulty reading labels etc).

Very unlikely we’ll fail to return sometime, even if not to repeat our new year experience

We stayed at The Painswick to celebrate our wedding anniversary we were away for 5 days and this was our first stop overnight for dinner bed and breakfast because it was a special occasion we booked The George suite. On arrival in the beautiful picturesque village we entered the car park which is small and there are limited spaces but some are reserved for residents, the Painswick is a beautiful building and we sat outside in the gardens for a drink the view over the Cotswolds takes your breath away, we were then shown to our suite which was lovely and the balcony was amazing overlooking the garden and surrounding area, we were so pleased we had found such a gem to start off our trip. When we went down for our evening meal we were one of the first to be seated, the waitress took our order then we realised after a long wait people who had arrived after us were eating and we were still waiting eventually we received our starter then we were forgotten it was over a hour and we still had not received our main meal and everyone who had arrived after us had eaten there mains, my husband wanted to complain but I’m one of them people who never complains, I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to ruin the evening, after a very long time the food arrived and the same thing happened at breakfast we were seated at a table ignored 4 other couples had there orders taken and had finished there breakfast and we were still waiting but the waitress did apologise even so I had to ask twice for our toast. It’s such a shame because the hotel was lovely and the food was very good but the customer service we received was the worst we have ever had and the bill was £605 for 1 night dinner bed and breakfast. The following night we stayed at Thornbury castle where the service is astounding and the bill was cheaper also having the best room at the castle and exquisite food. Of all the places we stayed The Painswick had the most staff so couldn’t be accredited to staff shortages. Very poor service but they did win on the comfiest bed and pillows.

I called this hotel to book a stay for new years eve. we are a group of 3 people, one couple and one single person. Hotel does not have rooms for 3 people, neither they have a room for 1 person.
They told me to book 2 double rooms, meaning that the single person would need to pay the room rate that a couple would normally share. Well this could be fine, even though very unconsidered of single people... What followed, was just horrendous. The only option to stay over New Year would be to book their package. They aid that our single friend would also effectively need to pay for that package that will include dinner etc as much as we would pay as a couple. When I asked why would single person pay for nonexistent partner, they told me its their policy. When I asked why do they discriminate against single people, the reply was the same: its our policy.... WOW

Dear Laraw912, Thank you for your review and apologise for any inconvenience or misunderstanding. We are sorry to hear you felt this way, this certainly was not our intention as we do not discriminate against anyone, and everybody is welcome in our house. I would like to clarify that all our rooms can accommodate maximum two adults therefore our rates are based on two adults sharing, hence you were suggested to book an additional room for your friend. Regarding stay on 31st December, due to the special celebration of the last day of the year we only offer our two-night stay package on New Year’s Eve. Thank you for again for your feedback and if you wish to discuss further, please contact us directly. Best Wishes, Monika Smolarek, Assistant Hotel Manager

Stayed overnight, given a room upgrade on arrival, lovely staff, we had the tasting menu which was fabulous, this is a really relaxing location which offers suggested walks around the local. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and the food explanations and wine flight details were excellent. The young French waitress knew her stuff when it came to the wines. All in all this hotel serves up excellence.
