My wife and myself had often said when driving past this Georgian Crescent Hotel, we will have a weekend stay and see if it is as good as it looks. The occasion arose this last weekend when my wife following knee surgery was ready for a break and I had spent the last six weeks being chief cook and bottle washer looking after her, a weekend when we could be looked after was very appealing. The reception was very welcoming and friendly, portage was soon arranged and we moved into a Junior Suite, well appointed and a view to die for. We did not use any of the extra facilities such as Sauna, indoor pool or Gym, so cannot comment on these. We did use the restaurant, the waiting and bar staff were helpful and friendly, I thought the menu to be not very exciting and overpriced, and was to find out that the food in general was not good. The first evening my wife ordered scallops and as she still does not have a large appetite following the surgery it was decided that she would have this as a main dish and I ordered whole` grilled plaice, my plaice was soggy and overcooked, I did eat it but commented to the waiter that it was overcooked, my wife just said her scallops were not very nice! She was kept awake all night feeling very bilious, and told me in the morning that the scallops were cold and she did not think they had been cooked! If I had know this I would have sent them straight back. The following evening we again went to the restaurant as we did not wish to go out from the hotel to dine. so again my wife ordered a starter of garlic mushrooms to eat as a main. i ordered a duck starter which was cold and not very nice, this was removed from the bill, my main was a rump steak which was very dry and and not very appetizing. The we both ordered apple crumble for dessert, this was the absolute end! My wife does not like custard so just had cream, and soon found that this crumble was terrible the crumble was made of huge lumps of floury pastry, the apples were not cooked and it was served in a mini saucepan it was not acceptable, I had ordered the custard as well as the cream, mine was also uncooked but worst of all the custard came out of a little jug in lumps, needless to say this was sent back. On check out the receptionist was extremely helpful and fair and asked us about our stay and made further adjustments to the bill, which was OK but did not make up for what was expected to be an enjoyable culinary occasion and experience. I would stay again but will not use the restaurant.

We spent just 2 nights at the Osborne, but have been so impressed we booked a further trip for next week.
The hotel is built on the side of a hill, with well-cared for gardens and facilities.
The hotel building is split between the hotel and the residential/holiday apartments, with adequate parking around the circumference of the building for all, although we stayed in October, in peak season it may well be a different story.

The reception staff were well-trained and efficient, any queries were swiftly resolved. I had occasion to request a handyman to see a problem with my shower head, before I could go up to my room from reception, the man had been there and fixed it.

The Crescent restaurant had a balanced menu, my wife and son had the pan roasted lamb rump with a delicious sauce all made with beautifully fresh ingredients and mashed potato. My daughter-in-law had the plaice very fresh and delicious. My little granddaughter had a gigantic sausage with baked beans and mashed potato from the children's menu. I had the rump steak, medium to rare and it just melted in the mouth, no fat or gristle.
Just my daughter-in-law and myself were game for dessert, she had the rhubarb crumble which came with a small jug of custard and a scoop of ice cream. I had the hazelnut sponge which was very dry, the caramel sauce with which it came could have been 4 times the volume to make it more palatable. The wait staff were impeccable in their attentiveness without being intrusive at all.

The building is old, and it shows in places. For some peculiar reason they just have names for the rooms, the doors and corridor signs do not display the numbers. This results in guests traipsing up and down the corridors searching for their rooms. That's not too bad at 8.00pm, but late arriving guests after 10.00pm walking up and down the creaking corridor floorboards trying to find their rooms is very disturbing late at night.

This is something that can easily be rectified, I did mention it to the reception manager when checking out. On our return trip in a couple of weeks time I will see if anything has been done about it and report back here. Edits after posting are not allowed on Tripadvisor so it will have to be another review.

The indoor pool was very warm and inviting but the chlorine levels were high to suit which can make the eyes sore, if you use the pool you may want to wear goggles.

Leisure pool and gym have the worst male changing facilities I have ever seen in an hotel. They are rarely cleaned and often devoid of toilet paper, soap or hand towels. There’s a lack of accountability or evidence of any attention to detail anywhere .... and lots of long term dirt.

Location lovely.
Room ( had suite on 1st floor) good, clean with sea views. No towels in room on arrival and had to ask.
Decided to have a light lunch and ordered the Nacho’s and White bait. The nachos were basically a plate of nacho’s with melted cheese with a pot of ? Sour cream and another bowl of ? Guacamole which was totally tasteless and probably out of a packet, no salsa? Lunch cost us £14.00 seriously overpriced for what we got and put us off eating there in the evening even though a dinner voucher was included in the price of the room.
Neeldless to say we cancelled our dinner reservation and ate in town!
Breakfast was basic, and not very inspiring and to be honest for a four star hotel lacked finesse and presentation. We both had a full English breakfast and the “West Country sausage” as described on the menu was cheap and tasted awful. We both took a bite and left it. A previous comment put on here by another customer commented on the “ bread being “ dry” as it was not covered and sat by the toaster. I fully agreed with this and obviously this has not been rectified. Seriously for the price we paid this hotel is not worthy of four star rating. Staff were very pleasant.
Don’t bother using the indoor pool! You have to navigate a series of rooms to find the changing rooms and the lockers do not have keys so don’t leave valuables in them. I really enjoy a hotel with a pool. We were in the pool for 10 minutes only as it was not a pleasant experience as it looked grubby and shabby. Lighting was poor and overall this really does require a total facelift or deep clean with new tiling and improve the lighting.
If it wasn’t for our room and the fact we paid upfront ( don’t normally do this!) we would have gone elsewhere. Come on Osborne get your act together and update as this could be an absolutely lovely Hotel worthy of a four star. Further please present breakfast with some finesse and wider variety with fresher foods on display It covered . Tinned grapefruit and prunes really? and the melon looked uninspiring and dry on a board!

Firstly I want to make it clear this is a review only about the lunch we had at the hotel. We have not stayed in the hotel as such. We had lunch here and I would not normally leave a comment about a hotel. However there was one thing that stood out and deserves a comment. I found the staff some of the most friendly and helpful I have come across in a long time. I needed some help and advice and the receptionist went over and above what was needed to help. They are clearly accommodating and we have said if we come back to this area and want to stay in a hotel, this would be at the top of our list.
Thank David L

There are plenty of bars, cocktail lounges and pubs nearby. We are a 5 minute taxi or 15 minute walk into town, and along a beautiful coastal route where you will find plenty of places to try.
