Staff are so friendly and welcoming, food & drinks are cheap and the location is good (if you don't mind a 15-20 min walk up and down steep hills to the town centre).

The room was very dated and there's nothing particularly 'deluxe' about the deluxe rooms, you just get a robe and maybe they're a little bigger. No shower gel provided, but lotion and shampoo was which I find strange! Walls are so thin that when the person next door closed a bed side drawer it was super loud and felt like it was in our room next to my head. Rooms aren't soundproofed so you can hear everyone closing doors, walking around and outside noise which contributed to very disturbed sleeps especially as some guests had a loud shouting row outside at 2am on my first night!

I was also woken up by an excited loud child in the pool at 8am (surely that's too early?!) and I was on the top floor so I'd hate to think how loud it was to the guests below. Would be good to have more than 6 deck chairs in the summer so more people can sunbathe by the pool. Some more breakfast options would be good as it's quite limited and vegetarian sausages weren't always available, lots of people have recommended you add fruit but I can see that hasn't been taken on board.

One last thing, the do not disturb/please clean the room door sign was hidden behind the fire safety notice attached to door and I didn't see it until my last day so my room wasn't cleaned for the 4 days I stayed. Not a problem to me but would've been nice if the cleansers knocked on the door to check if no sign was on display as they do in other hotels.

So we ended up at Devon only to find the hotel we had booked didn’t exist so in a blind panic we googled & found the anchorage.
We got it at a extremely good price & also paid for brekkie at £5 a head.
We arrived 10 minutes later & as soon as I said my friend was disabled they accommodated by changing our room to a ground floor.
We hadn’t booked dinner but opted for the 3 course at a reasonable £12. The food unusually was buffet style & you could sit anywhere.
The only downfall in my opinion is all the food was either frozen or processed I unfortunately but was tasty.
I’m not sure if you could go up more then once but once was enough.
They had a singer on & my friend said he did ok & got the audience involved.
The beds were comfy & there were mattress protectors on the beds 😬
The only downfall was our room was next to the men’s toilet & it was quite noisy with the door slamming all the time.
Breakfast was also buffet and had plenty of choice. The bacon was extremely nice & the rest was hot & edible.
Well worth a fiver 😊
These are all observations & not complaints as we would happily stay again..

We paid £126 for a small double room for two nights in August 2020.

The location was good. Just a few minutes’ walk to the pleasant Babbacombe Beach. The bed was really comfortable. The breakfast was okay, there wasn’t that much choice but all the hot things you’d expect. The public areas of the hotel had been made COVID-secure with one-way systems/hand gel etc.

The small double room needed a lot of TLC. A lick of paint goes a long way as well as a good solid clean, which in light of COVID I would have expected it to be cleaner. It had a very pungent smell when we first walked in and it never really disappeared even with leaving the windows open. The carpet was grubby and the bathroom had seen better days (the bath mat was filthy and unusable). The only plus points about the room was the comfy bed, a modern TV and a good shower, but they should go without saying.

Cleanliness = 4/10 the rooms were not fully cleaned at all. There was dust and grime on surfaces, the remote control was filthy. There was rubbish under the beds. Toilet roll had been ripped off. Did NOT feel very COVID-secure.

Hosts = 7/10 - front of house staff were understanding and kind but breakfast staff were rushed and did not make us feel welcome.

Breakfast = 8/10 it was understaffed but had a good choice off food. Food itself was good. Staff wouldn't let us sit on a table because it wasn't cleaned (which is fair enough) but then they didn't clean it all until breakfast was over...

Sleep = 7/10 comfy beds, soft mattresses so if you like a firm mattress then you're out of luck. Thin walls, could hear snoring and grunting from next door. Someone near us had a dog that was barking at 11pm.

Overall quite disappointed with our stay. It was meant to be a romantic birthday weekend away with my partner. When we first saw our room we were so upset we had to ask to change rooms. We booked a standard double room but our it looked NOTHING like the photos on their website or on booking.com. I appreciate not all rooms are the same but if you advertise a bath in your standard double rooms, then there should be one in ALL your double rooms. There was soap provided in the rooms but no shampoo or conditioner so prepare to bring your own.
I felt like the hotel just simply chucked us at the back of the building, furthest away from reception, in the worst room possible. We asked to swap rooms and were told an upgrade would cost £50 per night (we were staying for 2 nights) or we could have a twin room and push the beds together. We opted for the latter. The twin room was larger than our original double with a more modern bathroom but it was still small, had no bath, and was covered in dust. Putting these things aside we were grateful for the swap but it shouldn't have needed to happen in the first place.
Location was good, 5 mins walk to Tesco for essentials and 15 mins to the beach.
There are probably nicer places to stay nearby.

Well what can i say, as our breakaway was very nice relaxing and nothing to do because we left it all the the happy friendly supporting staff at the Hotel.
We arrived on Monday late afternoon, not knowing what to expect, as this was the first time we had been to this hotel, since we always use to stay at the Clifton Hotel in Teignmouth, for 20 years and decided this year was a change because Clifton was more expense than The Anchorage in Torqury.
We were told to book in for dinner when we arrived because we had only booked bed and breakfast and they were happy for us to join in for dinnertime in the evenings, however, we arrived late and i phoned through to book in and that was no problem.
My husband is a basic dry eater with no sauce and when he a problem with one meal they were happy to help out with his requirements and i also had a dietary requirement due to Kidney Disease, and they were happy to supply me with what i needed for breakfast and dinner.
I think the staff are very friendly, happy to help and also go out of their way to help if they can with requests.
There is also Accessibility rooms for the Disabled, however, you have to ask and book in advance to your stay, as there are limited?
I had a lovely room, which was room 26 for a family of four peolpe, since my Mother In Law shared a room with my husband and myself. The room was big with four beds and the bathroom had a toilet, sink, bath, shower and rails to hold when getting into the shower, bath and onto the toilet, which would be suitable for someone with mobility and a family who want to sleep together.
I am Severally Blind with limited sight and i concerned when we had to change tables for two morning and Thursday they had to move a lady from our table, which was good of them. We were told at the beginning of our stay to sit in the same place for the duration of our stay, which would of been easier for me or somebody else who maybe disabled. We were able to sit at our table at night and i was near to the buffet serving area, which was a help for me.
I work Voluntarily in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole doing Assess for Disabled people and that is why i mention the disabled people staying at The Anchorage Hotel, because it is very accessible for the Accessible rooms, bar are for drinks and entertainment, dining area, reception and also going out through the door, which a little ramp going up to the entrance. I am not sure about the garden are and there is parking in the car park or just outside of the hotel, but i am notsure if there is accessible parking bays for Disabled?
Pet dogs are allowed in the hotel, but not in the dining room, howerver, Guide Dogs are allowed into the Dining area with the blind person.
We have booked for late September, as we really enjoyed ourselves at The Anchorage Hotel with lovely staff.

We are very fair people so we will start with the positives. We booked 3 nights here for our first holiday of the year, something we were looking forward to. We entered the hotel and were greeted by a lovely receptionist, she was very kind and helpful and gave us the key for room 7. We also noticed the hotel were fully compliant with COVID-19 measures and we felt safe and there was sanitizer and floor markings in place.

Now for the bad bits, we entered room 7 and I can honestly say it’s the worst hotel room we’ve ever been in. It genuinely looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for years, cobwebs laced on the walls in the corner of the room, on the inside of the windows, and on the lamp shade. There was dust on the skirting boards and inside the bedside cabinets, the curtain was ripped, bathroom grubby and the bedroom ceiling had a huge stain on the roof, along with various other suspect markings and stains on the walls and ceiling, I’ve probably missed stuff out.

We called the reception and spoke to a gentleman who again was very helpful and when we complained immediately offered us a change of room. Number 33, so off we went and got our new key, up to the next room, upon opening the door, it looked a tad more modern, but once we were in there was a very strong stench of damp / drains. The corner of the room by the door was so damp the paint was flaking off the wall and mould was visible , dirty skirting boards and bathroom, marked and even cracked walls in this one were the key highlights. There is clearly a big damp problem throughout this place and it’s in dire need of refurbishment. The only thing we were thinking about less than 20 minutes after entering this hotel was how soon we could get out of there.

Once again, the staff were great and were clearly working with what they could and they refunded us in full just before we checked out, we just don’t want people to feel the sheer disappointment that we did. Save yourselves the heartache and go elsewhere.

Currently staying in this hotel, I have to say I feel it should be a 2 star. The staff are very friendly which is one positive however the cleanliness of the rooms and hotel in general isn’t great. I think especially given the current pandemic you would expect any touch points to be wiped down regularly, we actually had to go out to the shop to get some anti bac wipes and wiped down all the light switches handles tv remote in the room and there was brown dirt which came off. In the wardrobe there was a spider with large cob webs which doesn’t look like it’s ever been cleaned. The bed sheets have staines on them and marks all over carpet, windows also have spider eggs all over them. Also orange marks on towels.

The lounge bar area was clean and there is hand sanitiser throughout the hotel but you can see the hand marks all over the door handles.

The worst thing about this hotel is the noise, our wall must have been so thin we can hear everything going on in the room next door, every time a plug socket is plugged in and plugged out we can hear, when their talking when the TV is on. It really isn’t pleasant and wouldn’t have expected this or experienced this in any hotel stay.

The outside areas are nice and it’s in a good location. The car park is small, but not an issue.The swimming pool is open but very merky.

I don’t think I would feel so disappointed but we are staying here for 4 nights, I think 1/2 nights would be okay. But the level of cleanliness and next door room noise is enough for me not to return to this hotel again and would advise against anyone wanting a relaxing peaceful stay some where.

I wasn't going to bother writing a review initially, I just thought, we would chalk it up to experience. However the hotel popped up when I was searching recently and I've decided to share our experience. We've stayed at some lovely family run hotels and B & B's, but this was awful.

We stayed at the Anchorage Hotel during the easing of the first lockdown. It was nothing like the smart photos and in obvious need of refurbishment. The management of Covid health and safety was commendable, neither could we fault the service of the staff, barr one person - the Manager! Basil Fawlty has nothing on this man who didn't give a stuff! 

We were put in a room that broke all health and safety regulations and had badly stained furnishings. The mattress on one side had completely had it (the springs had completely gone and it should have been binned years ago). As a result my boyfriend had a really bad night. If that wasn't bad enough, there were low level wall mounted lights between us. We had to sleep at opposite sides of the bed, in order not to bash our heads on them. Quite clearly the lights were centrally placed, for the use of low twin beds and not a double. The old upholstered chair had heavy staining to the seat and arms, which quite frankly, turned my stomach.

The second night, the receptionist moved us to a different room. It was okay, but again, nothing like any of the photos online. If the Anchorage was not not able to offer the standard of room advertised they really shouldn't have taken the booking.

What is even more surprising, is that this is a family owned business, managed by a family member. You would think he would have more pride, but no, He was extremely aggressive and offensive and offered no apology whatsoever. I recommend you Google "Rude Manager, Anchorage Hotel, Torquay.

We paid £110 for a last minute impromptu trip to Babbacome on Saturday night. We had a pleasant stay and with the great weather enjoyed an hour next to the hotel pool sunbathing and swimming. The pool is deep enough to swim and clean.

Our room was spacious and felt clean but was also a bit dated as it was the end of the corridor (1 single bed 1 double bed) next to the pool. However there was a slight damp smell when entering the room. We noticed this every time we entered the room. It was freshly painted so wasn't too much of an issue.

The hotel garden and bar were lovely and enjoyed a beer and glass if wine in the evening and breakfast was good. A full English breakfast was provides and social distancing was adhered to.

The staff were friendly and apologetic about an incident that happened in the night. The guests next to our room had an altercation and we were woken up in the m8ddle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep. The hotel dealt with it well. Bu5 this wasn't thier fault and unavoidable.

I think for the price, we could have expected a better room with no damp smell. Due to the guests next door we didn't sleep that well. Felt we could have done with a discount! For this reason we would not go back again for the same price as we paid top money for the room and had some issues.

Despite this we enjoyed our stay and felt the hotel was good. The room could have been a bit better.

We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by a lovely receptionist. We were given the keys and got to our room. It stunk of cigarette smoke. Not just alittle bit either. My husband went to shower and we then found that both towels were dirty. One appeared to have what looked like rust on and the other had a big stain on it. I took them down to reception and asked for 2 clean ones, again the receptionist was very polite and said she would bring some up. Hubby in the meantime had sat on the bed and realised it was broken. When the receptionist came with the towels, we asked her to step inside. She too thought the room really smelled and also saw the bed. We were told to go back downstairs in 5 minutes so she could sort it out for us. I asked if hubby could continue with his shower as he was already in the bathroom by this point waiting for his towel. She said that was fine. We went downstairs and we greeted with a very rude manager who told us we couldn't have a refund as we had already used the facilities. Despite the receptionist saying we could. He said That he couldn't do anything. He then asked us to go sit on a nearby table. About 5 minutes later he gave another key to my husband and asked if we could go see if that one was OK. I had already looked online with the hope of leaving the hotel for another 1. But everywhere in Torquay was fully booked due to the Bank Holiday weekend. The 2nd room smelt better however you will see from the pictures that the 2nd bed had tried to be fixed with 2 bits of wood. It was dirty and the loft hatch in the shower had been left open.Dirty skirting boards, damp ceilings. We had a terrible night's sleep that was made even worse by some girl running up and down the corridor shouting for her friend. We were offered a complimentary drink by the manager but other than that as I said, we just found him so rude! I wouldn't go back there, which is a shame as Torquay itself is beautiful.
