This is our second stay at The Invicta Hotel, the first was in June 2022. To say things have changed at the hotel is an understatement. I think the hotel has recently changed hands and it certainly shows. Firstly, the hotel website states that it has a 4 star AA award. This is definitely for the old owners are this hotel is not noted on the AA website as holding any awards and would not be worthy of 4 stars. Surely any new owners would be obliged to change any incorrect details? This may seem a trivial thing but I was not happy when putting my pin number into the card machine to pay for the room with the receptionist watching me. I therefore messed up the pin. I advised the gent that he should not be watching me and should have least had been advised to turn away when he was being trained. This is a common courtesy never mind for security. No response was given which I took as “whatever”. I was also advised that the restaurant was closed for evening meals for the time being so we would have to make other arrangements. Again, this information should be shown on their website. We had no intention of eating there but others might want to. Our room (ground floor left) was as nice as before on initial inspection. However – 1. Turned down the bed. Had to check whether the sheet had actually been changed from the previous occupant. It was very crumpled and did not look as if it had been any where near an iron. Anyway, it was clean. Phew 2. No glasses in the bathroom or on the tea tray 3. Shower room is separate from the WC. Very strong smell of damp on opening the door. Evidence of mould on the grouting which could easily be cleaned 4. Fan comes on when you turn the light on in the shower room but runs out of puff, calms down a bit and then comes back on 5. Room was freezing but thought it was me at first as I was feeling tired. I was reading the welcome book and saw that the heating is only on 6am-10am and 6pm-10pm 6. I told the receptionist (different one to the gent on check-in) who advised it only gets turned on if guests ask. Really?? It's still cold in March - turn the damn heating on ! 7. I like to sleep with a bit of fresh air but couldn’t open the big window as the key had been snapped in the lock. Couldn’t reach the top window. This is obviously the reason behind the window and frame being filthy dirty as the cleaner can’t reach either I assume. This has not been touched in a long while 8. Window sill also had what looked like brick dust on the right hand side that again, had clearly been there for a while Parking – there is parking at the rear on a first come first served basis which is fair enough. We were lucky each time. The area is full of pot holes and uneven area and there is no lighting. Well there is but it wasn't working. This is an accident waiting to happen. Breakfast – I quickly found out that this again differs from the website. Some items had been removed from the menu. I settled for the full English and my husband chose poached eggs on toast. His eggs were hard and squashed on to one piece of toast. My breakfast was sent straight back to be re-done. The egg was hard. I don’t know what the mushrooms had been cooked in but they were all covered in what looked like congealed fat. The lady overseeing breakfast said it was butter. I don’t think so, it certainly didn’t smell like butter. What didn’t help was that the food was served on cold plates. You don’t need to have 4 AA stars to know that cold food is served on cold plates and hot food is served on hot plates. That said, the hash brown was fine as was the bacon. Corners are being cut everywhere but the owners are trying to be fancy at the same time. Individual little ramekins with piped butter but it was margarine. They advertise fresh pastries but they are long life individual items. My husband has a broken back and goes for quite a few walks throughout the day to help with pain and stiffness. We were made aware on check in that if we left the building our room key was to be deposited at reception for fire regulations. Makes complete sense. However, my husband went for a walk and I remained in the room. He was chastised by the receptionist for not leaving the key. I reminded him that his request was utter nonsense. Would we return? No. The Invicta Hotel, in my opinion, has been ruined.

Comfortable stay with very friendly staff on reception and at breakfast. All very welcoming. Breakfast was very tasty with plenty to choose from the help yourself options on offer and also ordering from the freshly cooked option. Hotel is in a great location, we would definitely stay again.

The website for this hotel and reviews were very good, so booked a night away here. Our experience was very poor, and wouldn't stay again. This is the only hotel where I have had to clean the bath before I could use it. Rest of bathroom ok (no glass or tumblers) but a number of curly black hairs resident in the bath tub. We had a superior king size bedroom, bit it was quite small. Also, although on 1st floor there was still 2 flights of stairs to climb, not good for a person of poor mobility. I would have complained personally to management, but didn't see anyone. On the plus side, we had a very good breakfast served by a friendly lady that was super efficient.

Great location for enjoying theatre, shopping, the Hoe, the pavillions and the Barbican. Comfortable room with nice toiletries. No lift so bear this in mind if you’re not so mobile. 24 hour reception, and car parking at rear of on street parking for a fee of £10. Good selection for breakfast and friendly staff.

My wife and I and our 2 yorkshire terriers just returned from a 2 night stay here and had a wonderful time, our room was large and bright the bed extremely comfy. Staff are great and the breakfast is excellent with a great choice, there is limited parking in a carpark at the rear but there is parking on the street outside (charges apply) great location very well priced and pet friendly, our only disappointment was the restaurant wasn't open but would certainly recommend this hotel

Stayed 3 nights and found that it's well placed for walking to all Plymouth's sites. The bed was large and comfy and we had a great nights sleep every night. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful and the breakfast was delicious and cooked to order. The only thing to watch is that the hot water is very hot, must cost a fortune to heat. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Plymouth.

We stayed here as part of a group for a business trip (Christmas party). The rooms were lovely and it was an easy walk to town and The Hoe. The owners are lovely and were very accommodating and the breakfast is superb. Would highly recommend and most definitely stay here again.

Very clean and friendly, was pleasantly surprised to have an upgrade on my room. Excellent breakfast. Only fault I had was the kettle in my room kept cutting out before coming to the boil. Will stay again.
