My partner and I had a lovely one night stay at the Pointer. We were upgraded to a better room as it was a quiet night for bookings, and we enjoyed a delicious dinner in the pub as well. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room itself was lovely.
We arrived for dinner on Sunday at 6pm. As it was a hot day we requested a table in the garden. We found it filthy with cigarette butts cutlery and other refuse on the ground. I ordered chicken liver pâté which turned out to be pork liver pate which seemed to have been bought in. The mains were a lamb salad and pork belly. The first was raw lamb and the second was fatty and undercooked. The lamb salad was changed for a burger which was also undercooked. It was clear from the charming front of house staff that many complaints had been received. Clearly the kitchen staff had not been properly trained and had little idea of their tasks. It is an establishment that was at the top of its game in the past with a matching reputation that now has slid down into the dumps. So sad
We were looking for a perfect family mini break and we couldn’t have chosen better. The Pointer pub and hotel is lovely, the food was absolutely delicious. I thoroughly recommend the burger and the fish and chips. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming or warmer and after a lovely dinner we went to our rooms which have huge comfortable beds and lovely bathrooms, a very good nights sleep indeed. I can’t recommend this place for dinner and a couple of nights away highly enough. It really was a perfect break. A special mention to Peter who very kindly arranged to send back our forgotten footwear, he definitely went above and beyond thank you so much.
The Pointer is absolutely amazing. We cannot speak highly enough of the extraordinarily kind, engaged, professional staff, the gracious service that went above and beyond, the friendly, homely ambience, the truly delicious Michelin-quality food, the spotless, tasteful, well-appointed bedrooms…… We were overwhelmed by the extraordinary kindness and professionalism we were shown no matter which way we turned. The Pointer will now become a very regular feature of our family life. My son and his fiancé approached The Pointer having had their wedding cancelled three times due to Covid-19 restrictions, the third time only a month before the wedding. This was their FOURTH attempt to rearrange their special day. The bride and groom’s vision was always to have a small (only ever to be 15), very high-quality wedding in a country setting offering Michelin-quality food to the people they most cherished. They had originally planned to have their wedding on the Isle of Skye at the world-renowned Three Chimneys before Covid-19 put paid to their plans. However, it perhaps says everything that the groom stated in his speech that ‘Plan B had actually proved far superior to Plan A!’. They felt that their wedding day was even more perfect than they had ever dreamed – and The Pointer and its outstanding staff are largely responsible for this success. We honestly cannot speak highly enough of the uniquely wonderful Jack and Emily who, from the outset, so professionally and graciously sprang into action to ensure that the wedding day was both successful and safe in every detail. They went to great lengths to set up a perfectly-sized dining room (although it could take double the guests). The room was completely separate from other diners, with private use of a courtyard garden accessed through French doors. They very cleverly and discreetly managed to create a COVID-secure environment without making this the primary focus and draining the joy from the occasion (e.g. they attractively displayed facemasks for guest use whenever they exited the event room). The well-appointed hotel rooms were not only meticulously clean and sparkling, but beautiful, quirky, and tastefully-decorated, all with spacious bathrooms and crisp, white bed linen dressing large and very comfortable beds. Prior to the main event, we attended a pre-wedding meal to select the wedding-meal menu. The food was sumptuous and the service kind, friendly, and unpretentious by people who so ‘know their stuff’ that they didn’t need to put on a show. The amazing Ollie talked extemporaneously and confidently, when asked, about the differences between the various wines, champagnes, and mouth-watering cocktails. On the day, many guests repeatedly extolled the virtues of his gorgeous gin cocktails! Matteo, the talented chef, in his open kitchen (always a good sign) creates the most superb food – and we can say this unreservedly as we’ve enjoyed several meals here over the month, including an outstanding pre-wedding meal with an array of different starters, main dish, and various desserts. We also enjoyed the most exceptional Sunday roast we’ve ever had in any restaurant (and we’ve eaten in many 5* restaurants all over the world). The wedding breakfast the morning after the wedding was really tasty, but, without doubt, the five-course wedding meal was an absolute triumph with an array of exquisite dishes. The Pointer is a uniquely special place. This is in large part because Jack and Emily, obviously loved and respected by their team, lead by example, inspiring their wonderful staff (including Matteo, Ollie, and Peter) to emulate them in going above and beyond in every single respect. They have created a unique, high-quality environment focussed on gracious service, balanced with a friendly, kind, family-like atmosphere that is reminiscent of a by-gone age. Nothing was too much trouble, and both Jack and Emily constantly took the initiative to make our day as wonderful as possible, anticipating and addressing our needs even before we were aware of them – including miraculously, and so discreetly, producing a little bowl of chips for a starving two-year old about to kick-off just as the ceremony began, and then again warm toast as the speeches got under way. They offered (without prompting) and succeeded in removing candle wax that had spilt copiously down the groom’s jacket. They pushed the baby to sleep in the buggy to allow his dad to be at the meal table. Their engagement with the guests and attention to every need – before ever a request was uttered - were absolutely second to none. Constantly, we heard our guest uttering: “They’re amazing here”. It’s three days since the wedding, but I know that one of the most abiding and touching memories will prove to be the outstandingly kind, gracious yet utterly professional service from The Pointer staff; their outstandingly delicious and beautifully presented food; the sheer fun we experienced despite this COVID-madness exactly because we were made to feel so safe in this COVID-madness; and the restfulness in our beautifully comfortable and well-appointed hotel rooms – all because The Pointer so ably, yet discreetly, carried the weight of the measures to keep us all safe and well-cared for. The Pointer genuinely saved the day – but with such style and aplomb of which kindness and graciousness were intrinsic elements woven throughout a wonderfully unique experience. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts and unreservedly and wholeheartedly recommend The Pointer as a wonderful family venue for delicious meals and Sunday roasts; as a friendly spot to sit and enjoy a drink with friends; as a perfect Covid-secure, stylish wedding venue that focuses on people’s well-being above all else. We will continue to sing the praises of The Pointer far and wide – and to enjoy the uniquely, wonderful, gracious company and experience of The Pointer. Really lovely hotel. Looks to be newly refurbished. Great size rooms and very comfortable, went with a dog and they even had a bed and water bowl in the room for the dog. But the rooms are still exceptionally clean.
