I contacted the hotel to book a room and lounge for 4 days, whilst my husband underwent back fusion surgery at the nearby hospital. I explained that I didn't know how long I needed, and could I be flexible about that. My husband and I had stayed there a few weeks prior. They told me I could book, and I repeated I needed flexibility. They booked me in for 5 nights. As we got closer to the time, we found out that my husband would require probably a bit more time in hospital so I contacted the hotel to extend and was told I could extend one more day but they had a big group coming in and were fully booked. I explained that I had asked for flexibility as I didn't fancy having to change accommodation whilst my husband was in hospital - they said sorry, they couldn't help.
Upon arrival, I was given an accessible room (which was fine) however the glasses were on the highest shelf in the kitchen and I couldn't reach them on tiptoe. Thankfully my husband was there the first night to get them down. Then I experienced poor room servicing regularly - twice I had to ask for toilet rolls as they were not replenished, I was not told I had to activate the Wifi before 2am, so had to phone for that, I selected to hang up my towels, not have them replenished, but they did that anyway, then one day I had no towels at all and had to phone and wait 15 minutes. The dishcloth was removed and not replaced. One day the full bin was not emptied and by the last day, they have removed two glasses and not replaced them. I asked again before I checked out if I could stay longer, they said sorry no. I moved to another accommodation in Takapuna and was there for another week as my husband had some complications and these people were amazing. Very flexible and helpful. Spencer on Byron was comfortable, but communication, service and helpfulness were lacking. I had to pay $20 per night extra to book an accessible park, which I found to be quite discriminatory. I probably won't stay there again in a hurry.

After staying here in 2014 and having a good experience I booked again for a week over Christmas and New Year.
I’ll start with the good - great location very close to Takapuna Beach and cafes/shops. Spacious rooms and good views at a reasonable price. The bad was that the rooms are old and tired and the bathrooms in particular need modernising. There was a damp smell and the wifi was absolutely hopeless in the room. I had to go to lobby to get decent reception which was annoying when I didn’t want to use data roaming.
I wouldn’t recommend if you’re looking for luxury or something special. It is ok if you need space to stretch out, and a kitchen in a handy location.
If they renovated this hotel it could be great again.

The Spencer on Byron is one of our preferred stays when in Auckland. The location in central Takapuna is handy for business but also an excellent staging post if you are heading north. It's also easy walking distance to a range of good restaurants. Rooms on the upper floors have great views over the harbour and city, or Lake Pupuke. The suites are well appointed and comfortable. Rooms are being upgraded progressively level by level - one we had had been completed and we could appreciate the work that had been put in. Service is always very good and the in-house restaurant is worth a try. We'll be back in March.

This was booked via my company's corporate booking tool which is definitely not on par with hotels I am used to for work trips. Apartment 1204 was decorated in 1985 and not updated since. Grubby, not clean. The gym is atrocious the most disgusting workout facility I have ever seen. I asked if there was sanitizer anywhere and was told no, I should have left. Really poor as usual but now during coronavirus breakout this should be standard. The treadmill is about to give away in the middle if I were to even think of jogging. Rooftop pool looks good in the website photos but it has 5 hard teak lounge chairs and the spa pool looks like it could use a few gallons of bleach and a good scrub. Had a wonderful fish dish with feta & watermelon and a brilliant keto benedict with mushrooms & avocado, shame it was difficult to eat knowing what a decrepit filth bucket this place is. Give the chef a raise.

Reading the reviews, I did not want to come to this place but I'm glad I did. Here are some things I noticed.

Reception doesn't seem to be manned between 230pm and 3pm, so I don't think there is any point coming early.

The lifts are great and the 11th floor hallway smelt fresh. We were in 1108, a suite with balcony (not the additional $10 for a view), and it seemed to me that this category of room was always on a corner, offering interesting views. We were facing north so straight at the Sentinel building which I actually really liked. It's attractive and being scared of heights it made me feel not too high up. We could see Tiritiri out one side and Lake Pupuke on the other, but facing south would have been nice too, getting Rangitoto, sunset and the city lights.

Our room was bigger and fresher than I expected, though furniture, carpet, walls and bathroom might not have been changed for a decade. A bit tired but clean. Linens lovely and clean, AC efficient and you can change the temperature and it does what you want.

Position of hotel is fantastic. On-street parking nearby and we know Takapuna but were still amazed by the range of quality eateries and shops within 5 minutes walk.

The tennis and gym and pool were good on level 2. Both pools were big and heated, ideal temperature for swimming and then relaxing in spa.

Staff we interacted with were friendly and efficient, but usually no one was behind the counter. You need to ring the bell.

Free coffee and biscuits in reception and nespresso machine with 2 capsules in room as well a generous quality assortment of Dilmah teas, hot choc, coffees etc ( also had dishwasher, clothes washer and clothes dryer such I couldn't get working).

Thank you Spencer Hotel! I hope to stay again one day!

We booked the school holiday package giving us $70 credit to use at the onsite restaurant/bar, it was such a great stay. All the staff were very friendly & room had great views. We missed out on parking but there were plenty of parking on the street right outside for very minimal cost. Roof top spa & heated pool was awesome. Would definitely recommend & will return

Booked a studio room with my partner and young son. We had wifi and many sky channels for in-room entertainment, so plenty of rugby and crankworx watching!

Gym has wear and tear, but well equipped with olympic bars and plates as well as a full cage and bench. Hopefully they add an elliptical machine when they finish the renovations.

Comments from another review about hygiene - well, gyms with spray bottles and cleaning towels don't necessarily make for a sterile environment. There are bathrooms in the gym, go wash your hands before you eat.

The only disappointment was the heat exchanger for the pools was broken, so no long sessions in the water which we usually enjoy.

My wife, myself and our 18 year old son attended a degustation evening last Saturday night and it was just brilliant. We had an awesome evening enjoying superb food and delicious wine matches from Sileni winery. The kitchen staff and chef were fantastic, with interesting food which was presented with flair - absolutely delicious. The Wagyu eye fillet steak was a highlight and I can not recommend this highly enough. Thank you for a great evening.

In comparison to the newer Quest Hotel nearby The Spencer is definitely in the motel range rather than a hotel. It is tired with damaged and mismatched furniture. Basic care and custody has slipped with damaged flooring, squeaky doors and dusty rooms.

The complimentary toiletries are cheap and nasty so would recommend bringing your own.

Views are amazing if you get the right side of the building.

The restaurant is closed and will remain so for a substantial period of time.

Our usual was booked out so stumbled upon this place. Nice and central. Staff pleasant and helpful. Paid for parking but none available so we were reimbursed. Looks slightly unloved from outside and same in foyer, went up in lift to dingy hallway that led to our room. At this stage we were a little unsure but when we opened the door it was great! Well appointed spacious one bed apartment with fabulous views. Bathroom small but functional. Air con was a bit dozey but on request a fan was provided, problem solved. This needs addressing as only one small window opened about 15cms.

We took the super shuttle to the hotel. I believe we paid $60 in NZ dollars. A lot cheaper than a taxi. Depending on the number of people in the shuttle it might take a little while to get there. Think it took about 30 mins from the time we left airport to hotel and we made 6 or 7 stops. Would use again. Did use for return trip and they were on time for pickup.

Hi how easy is it to get to north shore hospital from the hotel? Thanks

Hi cjmjs, It's quite easy. The hospital is about a 5 minute drive away. If you're wanting to use public transport. The hotel is about a 5 min walk from the Takapuna Bus Station and there are quite a few buses that leave from there and then go through the hospital grounds and stop right outside the hospital. The bus journey from Takapuna to the hospital would take 5-7 mins. Hope that helps The Spencer Team
