Hôtel La côte surprise was our third stop on our Gaspésie road trip in early July. We booked pretty last-minute before leaving for our trip (a week or so ahead), since Covid kind of threw off a lot of people's original summer vacation plans, including ours, so our choices for Percé accomodations wasn't exactly abundant. This hotel appeared to have favourable views of the famous rock, and considering you are in Gaspésie's most famous town, the price point was acceptable... And oh dear, what a view it had! It's this place's best asset, and it would appear the ownership/management knows it. Sitting on the balcony, watching the sunset with a glass of wine is one very pleasant activity you may do here, or eating your styrofoam packed breakfast (more on that later...) I had read many of the less favourable reviews prior to leaving about the condition of the place, some of the staff, etc. I agree with most of them. Even prior to arrival, when I booked it directly on their website, I inquired if they could contact me should a room with 2 beds become available through a cancellation. I got a reply back saying "we are sold out of rooms with 2 beds". Thanks... I realized you were, otherwise I would've booked one. I was just asking if they did become available. Anyway, so much for customer service. The check-in process was fine, with the gentleman manning the desk at night being quite nice. He explained we had to pick our breakfast the night before during a time slot, told us which building our room was in, all of this with proper sanitation measures in place. The room was as everyone else described them. Older but clean. It has that old cottage feeling with all the wood, which isn't a bad thing. The carpeted area around the bed is ancient. The furniture is very much from the 90s, perhaps 80s even. The curtain covering the entry door was falling off its railing, so I put it back as the hooks were still there. Overall, you can clearly see the rooms could use TLC sooner than later. I can confirm the walls are cardboard. Wish for quiet neighbours. Ours were, except for the showers they took where we heard every word of the conversation...The bed has a washable white duvet which was appreciated during these pandemic times. Mattress was comfortable enough, but no more. They should be replaced again sooner than later. Pillows flat as a pancake. BYO. Bathroom had a relatively new and clean soaker tub and a good hair dryer. There is a mini-fridge and sort of a vanity that must have once served as a kitchenette. Breakfast was delivered on time directly to your room, but in styrofoam containers (unfortunate they're still even legally allowed to use those in 2020), and my "chocolate banana" waffle had a drizzle of chocolate and I'd say about 1/4 of a banana sliced so thinly, it would have made Québec folklore figure Séraphin Poudrier proud. The dining room was closed because of Covid. Only the reception desk was accessible in the main building. So to conclude, I'm sure there are better options if you're looking for more up-to-date accomodations in Percé, but because of their location on a hill, you'll never get the view from other properties. That's a fine piece of real estate whoever first built this got, and this is what you pay for. It's clean, it's comfortable enough for a night (or two), and frankly, I personally had no issues with the in person service, as the lady who checked us out also steered us the right way for the ferry service to the island. However, don't expect anything more than average. You are captive in a touristy town where hotel/motel owners know that they don't have to go the extra mile or provide anything exceptional, because people will still come. This hotel is a good example of that.…
