First port of call in our 4 week stay in the North and South Islands and this place was the most expensive And the most run down we stayed in. How they got the cheek to call this 4 star is beyond me. Rusty metal in the bathrooms, engrained mould, running Alive with ants, dead mosquitoes on the floor, terrible decor, dirty old carpets. $270 a night!!! Breakfast included but you gotta pay for bacon or eggs!!! Unbelievable. Avoid go somewhere else, they need to refurbish big style...instead of ripping customers off
We booked for a week and on day one got stuck in the hotel lift for over an hour. A technician opened the door half way between floors and the fire service lifted us out. On the way out my calf ripped and I spent five hours in hospital. We had to leave to recuperate at home and were still charged $600 for this. They should have refunded all of this. We wrote to the owner about this and still haven’t had a response. The place seemed run down and did not offer the five star accomodation and service they had promised with barely any staff. We were offered a meal that was inedible (which was served by the person who checked us in) and we were very disappointed all round. The evening meal was inedible and the breakfast minimal - no continental or juice etc, just a fry up. It’s been…
We had lunch here in the front dining room overlooking Auckland Harbour. Good food and drinks at pub prices . Very good service and free WiFi. This is an old hotel restored to its former glory and is in an ideal position on a corner opposite the ferry terminal. I recommend it if you are doing a day trip to Devonport.
This restaurant is located just a few steps away from the ferry terminal, and is an easy commute over from the Auckland city center. Our group had reserved the back room for dinner. Our servers were very efficient and made sure that we had everything that was needed. I had the leg of lamb which came with mashed potatoes and was very good. My wife ordered the tuna which was a very thick cut of fish that was seared on both sides, but still rare in the center. It wasn’t her favorite, but others in our group really liked it. We both had tiramisu for dessert, and it was different from any that we had ever had before. The cake layers were chocolate which actually made it much better than the typical way that it is served.
What once was probably a grand old hotel, now tired and run down. In desperate need of renovation or even a lick of paint, which is such a shame because it would otherwise have enormous potential. Amusing (or infuriating, depending on your sense of humour) 'Faulty Towers' aspect to the service and upkeep. To give but one example: my in-laws complained that they could not turn on the light without the fan coming on as well but were told that this couldn't be avoided because of the old wiring; a little later I heard another guest complain that his fan kept on coming on whenever the people in the room next to him turned on their fan! The service, depending on who you get, varies enormously, from rude to efficient and polite but ultimately isn't up to scratch: my in-laws and my…
Beautiful old hotel in Devonport, Auckland. Very charming. But the food is sub par!! We unfortunately chose the pork belly and it was disgusting. Fatty crackle-less barely cooked pork floating in packet gravey withsome sort of off white tasteless kumera slop also floating around. Honestly worst meal ever! Manager did say she needed to go teach the chef how to cook pork!! Really?????? Got a few dollars off the price but take our advice and go eat somewhere else.
We visited the Esplanade Hotel on New Years Eve with family from New Zealand, England and America. What was meant to be a special occasion, ended up being memorable for all the wrong reasons. To name a few; - It took 3 hours to be served 3 courses, all of which were supermarket standard. - The waitress lost our food order, and then lost our drinks order. When we re-ordered both they still got it wrong. - We waited over 45 minutes to be served a drink in a mix of all different glasses. - After asking to see the Manager on several occasions, he did not show his face and in fact ran away on one occasion when we tried to speak to him. As for the hotel itself - we enjoyed staying, it has lovely views and is in a great location. It’s a shame the restaurant was so poor. This place…
I stayed here during a business trip. I love old historical hotels like this. The rooms are all done in the style of the period, the lounge downstairs has a fireplace and a library like atmosphere, and the team running the place are very nice. Loved to read about the history of the home and the area.
The quality of the food was very poor, standard supermarket type caramel slice, large muffins, canned cream and worst of all mould on the sandwich bread!! Initially the service and selection of teas were fine but soon after the food was served there was a lack of service. When I showed the mouldy bread the waitress took it away and there was no follow up to apologise or offer to put it right. I definitely would NOT return.
Food - very poor and service was the same. We ordered Devonshire Tea. The tea was just warm and the cream was obviously instant from a can and very small quantity for the size of the scones. Also hardly any jam given. We asked for a pot of boiling water to add to tea, but this never arrived. Will NEVER go there again!
