We took the ferry over to Devonport to have an afternoon away from the buzz of Auckland . We explored on foot and popped into the Esplanade for a drink before heading back across the water. It wouldn't have taken much for us to decide to stay for dinner, but it wasn't to be. While we were there entertainment arrived with his guitar and played a few numbers before we left. Shall we say he put his own take on the songs and we weren't inspired to stay, so moved on relatively quickly.
We were told that we had booked superior room. We decided that we would make the most of the Harbour Sun Room and booked an extra night. We were disappointed, and appalled at the state of the room:- There was a discarded used paper towel left on the sunroom floor. The sunroom seemed to be used as a storeroom, 2 heaters and a fan, furniture and cushions in disarray. The venetian blinds did not work. The curtains were hanging from their hooks. The carpets in the room had not been vacuumed properly for some time, anything put on the floor was covered in dust. The glass surfaces, tables and mirror, had not been cleaned properly The breakfast provided was substandard, when we asked for fruit juice we were told that it would be extra!! We can understand that in these times…
We spent 2 nights at Esplanade & are disappointed as we love heritage buildings & were looking forward to the stay. Our room was musty & decor very dated. Service was not professional and the breakfast was also disappointing. Try bacon & eggs on cold plates, not nice. The Esplanade is in a stunning location and it is a grand old building however I wouldnt recommend it as a place to stay & we wont be back unless it is shown significant TLC and investment.
We came over from the Auckland cbd for a nice breakfast for our grandmas 84th birthday and it was highly disappointing so, if your looking for a disgusting breakfast with a frustrating experience with a short wait of 40 minutes to spear for a coffee then this is the place for you! My sister ordered a salmon bagel which came raw/slimy and tasting nothing like salmon- after asking for a different piece of salmon they returned it with a better piece of cooked salmon but with a raw/chewy bagel- not toasted. We waited about 45 minutes for some tea/hot chocolate it was ridiculous- hot chocolate came luke warm. I ordered tomato, toast and a hash brown (seemingly simple order) came with 2 poached eggs swimming in liquid and I’m vegan so that wasn’t acceptable- they took the plate away…
We had a few drinks to meet friends on Saturday evening. The service was terrible and the place needed a good clean. Hardly anyone there, which is not surprising. Music was the only redeeming feature.
First port of call in our 4 week stay in the North and South Islands and this place was the most expensive And the most run down we stayed in. How they got the cheek to call this 4 star is beyond me. Rusty metal in the bathrooms, engrained mould, running Alive with ants, dead mosquitoes on the floor, terrible decor, dirty old carpets. $270 a night!!! Breakfast included but you gotta pay for bacon or eggs!!! Unbelievable. Avoid go somewhere else, they need to refurbish big style...instead of ripping customers off
We booked for a week and on day one got stuck in the hotel lift for over an hour. A technician opened the door half way between floors and the fire service lifted us out. On the way out my calf ripped and I spent five hours in hospital. We had to leave to recuperate at home and were still charged $600 for this. They should have refunded all of this. We wrote to the owner about this and still haven’t had a response. The place seemed run down and did not offer the five star accomodation and service they had promised with barely any staff. We were offered a meal that was inedible (which was served by the person who checked us in) and we were very disappointed all round. The evening meal was inedible and the breakfast minimal - no continental or juice etc, just a fry up. It’s been…
We had lunch here in the front dining room overlooking Auckland Harbour. Good food and drinks at pub prices . Very good service and free WiFi. This is an old hotel restored to its former glory and is in an ideal position on a corner opposite the ferry terminal. I recommend it if you are doing a day trip to Devonport.
This restaurant is located just a few steps away from the ferry terminal, and is an easy commute over from the Auckland city center. Our group had reserved the back room for dinner. Our servers were very efficient and made sure that we had everything that was needed. I had the leg of lamb which came with mashed potatoes and was very good. My wife ordered the tuna which was a very thick cut of fish that was seared on both sides, but still rare in the center. It wasn’t her favorite, but others in our group really liked it. We both had tiramisu for dessert, and it was different from any that we had ever had before. The cake layers were chocolate which actually made it much better than the typical way that it is served.
What once was probably a grand old hotel, now tired and run down. In desperate need of renovation or even a lick of paint, which is such a shame because it would otherwise have enormous potential. Amusing (or infuriating, depending on your sense of humour) 'Faulty Towers' aspect to the service and upkeep. To give but one example: my in-laws complained that they could not turn on the light without the fan coming on as well but were told that this couldn't be avoided because of the old wiring; a little later I heard another guest complain that his fan kept on coming on whenever the people in the room next to him turned on their fan! The service, depending on who you get, varies enormously, from rude to efficient and polite but ultimately isn't up to scratch: my in-laws and my…
