Room was unclean asked for a refund was told we could not have one. He said he would give us a bigger room and i explained it wasn't the size of the room although it was very small it was the fact it was dirty. He said there was no chance of a refund and gave us the keys for the room next to the original room. As he had said the room was bigger but just as dirty. The guy at receptions said they didn't have a housekeeper and were looking for one and i suggested he should clean the rooms or not rent them out. The bed was the most uncomfortable every and very old with springs poking through. Paint was peeling off the ceiling and the curtains were torn. The floors had not been vacuumed and the bathroom floor was sticky and the shower dirty. I actually wrote the date in the dust on the windowsill and on top of the bin.…
We booked a table for 4 for xmas lunch. Our steak was served medium rare, we asked or well done. We were supposed to have smooth mashed potatoes..... only one of us got potatoes with the meal and they were not mashed, just dry lumps. The roast veggies were raw. As were the green beans and broccoli. One of the desserts was Pavlova (debatable) with kiwi fruit which was served as half a kiwi fruit on the side and no sign of the berry compote! The waitress forgot to bring another glass of wine as ordered and the service was painfully slow. There was very little xmas spirit or decorating bar one xmas tree in the corner of the room. Very disappointed with the whole event. It is a beautiful Hotel with stunning views but the service and quality of food was very below par. Will not be returning again.…
Totally disgusted at the dreadful service from this hotel. Had booked to stay for my birthday , went into level 4 lockdown, despite multiple attempts to contact with no response, we were charged for the nights stay we never had. No chance to rebook. Highly recommend you never stay here. It needn’t be like this, we would have happily rebooked. I see we arent the only ones to have had this experience
This was our last stop on our trip around New Zealand. We took the ferry to Devonport and had brunch at the Esplande before going to the airport. We made allowance for the staff who were clearly busy trying to set up for the day but our group of four loved everything about it. We are easy going customers so it did not matter if the service was a bit slow, we were quite contented to sit in the window seats and watch the world go by. Brunch came and was fantastic. It was the best way to wind up our travels and we would certain go there again
We were looking forward to going for dinner. What a shambles this once iconic place has become. Everything is old and dirty. The staff need training and a lesson on what to wear. A raincoat is not appropiate uniform for the waitress to serve food in. Toilets stink, food is below standard. Waste of money!!
We had been here several years ago and loved it. This time very disappointed. Room was overcrowded with cooking facilities that are no longer used. The bath had little paint on it and the bathroom tiles full of mould. The Venetian blinds in the bathroom broken, and the curtains in the bedroom not hanging properly. The TV needed a degree in technology to work. Could only be turned off with a secret button at the back on day one, and day two no control over the volume. While the service was lovely, the bed comfortable and the room warm, the general air of decay both in the rooms and lounge bar was grounds for crossing off this once grand place.
How sad that it was such a bad experience. Four of us...booked the Penthouse...no gas in the fire so the apartment was freezing. There were cheap plastic fans dotted around. The dishwasher had the previous guests dishes unwashed. No tea in the container. The pot plants in the master ensuite had seen better days. The second bedroom had an ironing board, iron, heater and air con unit cluttering the room. As if this wasn't bad enough sadly the staff weren't interested.
Don’t know why other people are complaining.. this is a stunning building and my room was beautiful. Harbor views in two different directions from separate windows, immaculate modern bathroom and period style brand new seating area to enjoy the views from. Fridge, electric blankets, free standing full length mirror, original fireplace. fabulous value compared to a regular motel or CBD hotel. Friendly and helpful hotelier. Great bar area. Can’t believe my luck value-wise.
This is no experience in revelling in the history of what was once a fine and grand hotel. It's shabby, tired and currently disrepected. The service seems chaotic and it had all the hallmarks of a Fawlty Towers episode. The room was tired and sad. Curtains were faded, paint was peeling, the fridge had been left off so was leaking and the bathroom had some weird wiring experiment going on with NO lights above the mirror. It's a beautiful that needs to be cherished and nurtured. It certainly isn't getting that treatment now and the rate we paid $175 (!) was certainly a rip off.
At weekend at faulty towers...on checking in the receptionist had no record of our booking, insisted on photo ID and even suggested we had booked under a different name? I was given the pile of check in information to see if I could see our names among the people already booked into the hotel, so much for privacy? The room and bed was very substandard, we had to request the floor be vacuumed as there was hair all through it. The smoke alarm went off at 4 am the first night in the room next door and continued for one hour! Room service does not include clean towels or washed cups.
