The hotel is in a heritage building in the most dominant location at Devonport harbor and ferry pier. The rooms facing the sea are OK, the rooms to the backyard are small without view. The biggerst advantage of this hotel is its location to have the ferry right in front of the hotel to reach the center of Auckland in 12 minutes.

This is a quaint old fashioned hotel reminiscent of the hotel setting that I imagine from Roald Dahl’ book “The Witches”. The bed was extremely comfortable, but the room was extremely small. The bathroom was oddly much larger than it needed to be but the shower pressure and temperature were just fine. The place could use a coat of paint and air con units to improve my rating. The on site pub seems to be a very civilised affair with a nice log fire, but food was not available during our brief stay. For food head off to the many venues in the adjacent Devenport suburb - it’s also quaint and worth a visit. Of note is this hotel’s proximity to the ferry terminal from Auckland city. It is literally across the road and rather convenient.

We had lunch here in the front dining room overlooking Auckland Harbour. Good food and drinks at pub prices . Very good service and free WiFi. This is an old hotel restored to its former glory and is in an ideal position on a corner opposite the ferry terminal. I recommend it if you are doing a day trip to Devonport.

This restaurant is located just a few steps away from the ferry terminal, and is an easy commute over from the Auckland city center. Our group had reserved the back room for dinner. Our servers were very efficient and made sure that we had everything that was needed. I had the leg of lamb which came with mashed potatoes and was very good. My wife ordered the tuna which was a very thick cut of fish that was seared on both sides, but still rare in the center. It wasn’t her favorite, but others in our group really liked it. We both had tiramisu for dessert, and it was different from any that we had ever had before. The cake layers were chocolate which actually made it much better than the typical way that it is served.

We booked for a week and on day one got stuck in the hotel lift for over an hour. A technician opened the door half way between floors and the fire service lifted us out. On the way out my calf ripped and I spent five hours in hospital. We had to leave to recuperate at home and were still charged $600 for this. They should have refunded all of this. We wrote to the owner about this and still haven’t had a response.
The place seemed run down and did not offer the five star accomodation and service they had promised with barely any staff. We were offered a meal that was inedible (which was served by the person who checked us in) and we were very disappointed all round. The evening meal was inedible and the breakfast minimal - no continental or juice etc, just a fry up. It’s been 11 months and the negative feeling from the experience has not abated. Do not go here. Then only thing five star was the price and location!

At weekend at faulty towers...on checking in the receptionist had no record of our booking, insisted on photo ID and even suggested we had booked under a different name?
I was given the pile of check in information to see if I could see our names among the people already booked into the hotel, so much for privacy?
The room and bed was very substandard, we had to request the floor be vacuumed as there was hair all through it.
The smoke alarm went off at 4 am the first night in the room next door and continued for one hour! Room service does not include clean towels or washed cups.

Room was unclean asked for a refund was told we could not have one. He said he would give us a bigger room and i explained it wasn't the size of the room although it was very small it was the fact it was dirty. He said there was no chance of a refund and gave us the keys for the room next to the original room. As he had said the room was bigger but just as dirty. The guy at receptions said they didn't have a housekeeper and were looking for one and i suggested he should clean the rooms or not rent them out. The bed was the most uncomfortable every and very old with springs poking through. Paint was peeling off the ceiling and the curtains were torn. The floors had not been vacuumed and the bathroom floor was sticky and the shower dirty. I actually wrote the date in the dust on the windowsill and on top of the bin.

Don’t know why other people are complaining.. this is a stunning building and my room was beautiful. Harbor views in two different directions from separate windows, immaculate modern bathroom and period style brand new seating area to enjoy the views from. Fridge, electric blankets, free standing full length mirror, original fireplace. fabulous value compared to a regular motel or CBD hotel. Friendly and helpful hotelier. Great bar area. Can’t believe my luck value-wise.

We were told that we had booked superior room. We decided that we would make the most of the Harbour Sun Room and booked an extra night. We were disappointed, and appalled at the state of the room:-

There was a discarded used paper towel left on the sunroom floor.

The sunroom seemed to be used as a storeroom, 2 heaters and a fan, furniture and cushions in disarray.

The venetian blinds did not work. The curtains were hanging from their hooks.

The carpets in the room had not been vacuumed properly for some time, anything put on the floor was covered in dust.

The glass surfaces, tables and mirror, had not been cleaned properly

The breakfast provided was substandard, when we asked for fruit juice we were told that it would be extra!!

We can understand that in these times the cost of maintenance can be challenging, but shabby does not need to be unclean. A pre requisite of hospitality are clean, well presented rooms and a simple well prepared and well presented breakfast.

First port of call in our 4 week stay in the North and South Islands and this place was the most expensive And the most run down we stayed in. How they got the cheek to call this 4 star is beyond me. Rusty metal in the bathrooms, engrained mould, running Alive with ants, dead mosquitoes on the floor, terrible decor, dirty old carpets. $270 a night!!! Breakfast included but you gotta pay for bacon or eggs!!! Unbelievable. Avoid go somewhere else, they need to refurbish big style...instead of ripping customers off
