Our room was clean with the basics - storage for clothes and gear, hangers, a complete en suite bathroom, and the owners brought us a mini-fridge for the room to keep a few drinks and our lunches cold. Quiets down later in the evening, good breeze for sleeping. Breakfast was amazing! Hosts were friendly and helpful. It's just a short walk to the beach. Markets are nearby as well as a bakery.
They arranged for a taxi to meet our flight in and then they drove us to the port on our departure.

Nothing fancy but convenient. You cannot throw toilet paper in the toilet which I think is plumbing across the island. Its conveniently next to a grocery store. They have lovely flowers in their garden. She makes fresh breakfast. They also have a pharmacy next door. Breakfast was juice, cereal, eggs, toast.

I had a very nice 1-night stay at La Gran Tortuga this week. The Room was clean, the AC cold, the hot water was hot, the Wifi worked well, and the bed was comfortable. In other words, they delivered on everything expected at this price point.

But they really went beyond. The breakfast was delicious. They helped me get a Sierra Negra tour booked for the following day. It was clear that they really wanted me to enjoy my stay and wanted to help however they could.

This was my third trip staying at Gran Tortuga in Isla Isabela! I spent two weeks surfing, snorkeling, hiking, and horseback riding. What really sets Gran Tortuga apart from some of the other hotels/hostels on the island is the personalized service/care from the owners. The complimentary breakfast does not end at a certain time, it is when you wake up, as long as you inform the owner beforehand. Special dietary requests: vegetarian, etc, no problem. During this trip they also helped arrange tours to Los Tuneles (amazing lava tunnels far offshore in the middle of the ocean) where i snorkeled and saw rays and sea horses and to volcan chico and sierra negra which was also a blast. They even helped me rent a bike to visit the Wall of Tears instead of having to hire a tour and go with a group. I was able to not only save money, but also to have an amazing bike ride and a much better experience. Juana and Jose, the owners, are really out there to ensure everyone has a great trip. They put people first and are not just trying to run a business like some of the other hotels.

That being said, in addition to the personalized attention, the conditions of the hotel and rooms are also high quality. They have now completed a second floor (4 or 5 more rooms) also complete with private bathrooms, hot showers and cool a/c (a must have for summer months). They are currently completing a chill-out area on the roof with a huge balcony and a bunch of hammocks, which will be perfect after a surf session, hike, snorkel, etc.

I will definitely be back in the Galapagos in 2013, and undoubtedly staying at La Gran Tortuga!

If you are traveling to Galapagos for the first time I think it’s important to understand a few things. The infrastructure in most of the islands is basic, what I mean with that is that if you are expecting big resorts like the ones you find in Punta Cana or Cancun you will be disappointed. We stayed at Isla Isabella- Puerto Villamil for 2 days. Here we did 2 of the most amazing activities (snorkeling at Las Tintoretas and Los Tuneles). While in Galapagos you are going to notice that the towns have very close net communities where everyone knows everyone. They understand that you as a tourist are their main source of income. So, they protect you and want to make sure that you have a pleasant and safe experience. The hotel provides a clean room with hot water very close to the city center (park) were you can find restaurants and bars and is also walking distance to a beautiful beach. Now the people are what make all the difference in the world. Juanita (the owner) treated my wife and me like we were family. From the moment we arrived to the time we left she make sure that we had everything we needed. I will highly recommend staying at this hotel.

We stayed with Juana from La Gran Tortuga on Isabela Island. Juana picked us up at the airport and took us back to the hotel. We had a fabulous room, HUGE with high ceilings and super clean. We are a family of 3 and we got a room with 4 beds, with A/C, bath, and a mini-fridge. It was really hot and muggy in April and the reliable A/C and good shower were such blessings and yummy breakfast was just the icing on the cake. We were extremely comfortable. (Juana, La Gran Tortuga; $378 for 3N, with breakfast). Juana booked us for the Las Tintoreas tour ($50pp) and Los Tunneles ($80pp). Both tours were Excellent!!! We also went snorkeling at Concha y Perla in Isabela. The bubble rope that denoted danger had gotten free from its anchor and was invisible. I got dragged out to sea on an extremely strong current, over sharp rocks and it was a pretty scary (and painful) experience! When I got back to the hotel, Juana took one look at my lacerated foot and took out some first aid stuff and took care of me. Thank you Juana!

Also, the hotel is an easy walk to "town", about 5 minutes. There are a few restaurants that serve very good food. Each restaurant has these daily "specials". They are really good deals with a juice, entre, and salad for $6-7 dollars. They are really the best tasting and freshest choices you can make. At dusk, some street vendors would come out and we got some really good grilled plantains too. Overall, a great time!

We enjoyed our stay at La Gran Tortuga. The room was clean and the air conditioning worked well. Breakfast was plentiful and well made. Juana's husband gave us an excellent tour of the mangroves and the wall of tears. We really enjoyed his stories about how life has changed in the years they have lived on the island.

Definitely our favorite hotel stay in the Galapagos. We accidentally got to the hotel a day early, but Juana accommodated us and made us feel right at home. We arrived at an odd hour and missed breakfast, and she promptly made us sandwiches and coffee. Then, she told us there was a large group visiting and that she was putting us in her own hotel two buildings away, at no extra charge.

Juana was also very helpful in getting us a day tour, and diligent about us getting it at a fair price. On our way out of Isabela, her husband offered to drop us at the ferry dock at 5a. Very sweet couple. Would absolutely stay there again.

We had a wonderful time at La Gran Tortuga. We stayed here for 3 nights and paid $180 (without tax) for the room. We received a deluxe room which had a private bathroom. The room was very clean and made every day. It was great to come back to a room with towels that come in different shapes, such as swans and flowers. In addition, the cost of the room came with breakfast every morning. The breakfast was so good and really filling. We had eggs, toast, cheese, ham, yogurt, fresh fruit, and freshly squeeze juice.

We ordered our day excursions through the hotel to Sierra Negra Volcano, Las Tintoreras, and Los Tunneles.

The owners of the hostel were really nice. The lady waited for us with my sister's name when we got off the pier. We had an ant problem in our room and they took care of it. Lastly, when we left Isabela Island, the lady gave us a bagged breakfast with a sandwich, juice box, and fruit.

I would highly recommend this place!
