We booked three nights here through Booking.com at fairly short notice. Shortly after booking the hotel phoned to say that we had been double booked. They offered an immediate refund or we could stay but change rooms each night. We elected to stay and received a very warm welcome on arrival. Social distancing and cleaning procedures seemed to be very good and we felt safe and secure with this.
Switching rooms each night was not a problem as we had limited luggage and the staff were amazing, moving our bags and any clothes hanging in the wardrobe for us each morning to our new room.
The beds were very comfortable, and rooms had tea, coffee & biscuits, toiletries, small tv and bathroom, all spotlessly clean. Views are amazing to wake up to.
Breakfast was lovely - cooked to order with a good choice of food and the option to pick and choose what you would like from the English breakfast items. Home made bread toasted was also excellent. Service was always superb and with a friendly attitude.
We ate dinner in the restaurant overlooking the valley during our stay and the meal was first class. Food was beautifully cooked and an imaginative menu.
If you like corporate sleek hotels with no atmosphere this is not for you, but if you like a friendly, welcoming place to stay, with all the comforts of home, you can't go wrong. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back.
Finally, we'd like to add a big thank you to all the staff who went above and beyond and ensured we had a lovely stay.

We stayed in a B&B a couple of minutes walk away and ended up eating at the Three Wheat Heads every night of our three days in the area because it was so convenient for us. Food and beer were good quality and we were happy to return. Portions are on the large size, so think twice before ordering a starter. That said, the Black Magic starter (black pudding and bacon topped with an egg) provided something different from the normal options on most menus. Staff were friendly, efficient and very hard working.

Good hotel. Small room. Clean (only some dust in the fireplace niche), very cozy. From the window of the room and the restaurant there are beautiful views of the hills with blooming heather. Great restaurant for dinner. Tasty breakfast.

This is definitely not 4 Star accommodation. Our first room had a broken shower so we had to ask to be moved. We were given a bottle of shower gel with a very small amount in bottom so it was used!! Covid and all! We moved to a room with a working shower. However, the bathroom was damp and the toilet seat so worn that the wood was showing through in places. Quite frankly disgusting. The bedroom was far from luxurious and did not match any of the reviews we read or the 4 star rating. Not worth anywhere near the £110 a night we paid.
The evening menu although good choices and good standard food, did not match the menu showed on the website by a long way. The restaurant has no atmosphere at all. The breakfast was good although if you want to enjoy a full english, everything is fried not grilled. Grapefruit juice not available for the whole of our 4 night stay despite a local supermarket and marmalade not available the first morning. There is no excuse for any of this.

We'd seen a couple of negative reviews about this restaurant but we're staying locally so decided to try it anyway, and we are so pleased we did!! We hadn't booked, and on arrival we were told there may be a short delay as they were hosting a large party. We were shown to our table and brought drinks whilst we perused the menu. Our orders were taken quickly and our food arrived about 10 minutes later. My husband started with leek & potato soup (very nice) and for main, liver & bacon (one of his favourites), which was cooked to perfection. I had pan fried salmon which was delicious. We finished with coffee. The staff were great, attentive and friendly and are certainly not deserving of the negative reviews. We had a lovely evening and I would definitely recommend visiting the Three Wheat Heads if you're in the area, you won't be disappointed.

We went to this pub three times during our week’s holiday as it was so good. A huge variety of delicious and beautifully presented options including an excellent choice of vegetarian and vegan dishes. The staff were so helpful and friendly too, especially Aaron, who we must give a special mention to - he was great! The four of us sampled ten different dishes over our three visits and all were delicious. Food isn’t too expensive and we’ll worth every penny.

We were recommended this Inn and made a last minute booking so were very lucky they could accommodate us. The views from the restaurant are stunning.
The food is exceptional on every level - fantastic taste, served piping hot on hot plates, huge portions and so much choice! Every dish was fabulous and reasonably priced.
The young barmen were friendly, efficient, helpful and very polite. The restaurant was full and they kept everything flowing with apparent ease.
Thropton and surrounding areas are very lucky to have this jewel in their crown!

We visited the Three Wheat Heads for a Sunday carvey after hearing great things about the food. We arrived and were seated, then immediately asked what we wanted to drink. Not a major problem, but there was no welcome or conversation from our waitress. Shortly after we ordered and our drinks arrived, we were called to the carvery counter to make our choices. The gentleman serving appeared to be the chef, and again there was no conversation with us, instead several rather barked questions as to what we wanted. Once served, we sat and tucked in. Immediately we all reached for the salt cellar on the table to try and add some flavour to an otherwise bland meal. The meat didn't seem to be fresh and lacked taste, the vegetables were luke warm, unseasoned and, I would have been prepared to bet, frozen rather than fresh as advertised & served in chipped crockery. The "new " potatoes appeared to be reheated, as were the soggy, chewy Yorkshire puddings. All in all a disappointing experience, and sadly one which I will not be rushing to repeat.

We stayed here for a night as a starting point to the Northumberland 250 and we were really impressed, there’s ample parking, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the place has plenty of character (and not that ‘needs doing up’ type of character), the room was spacious and clean with a well equipped bathroom and lovely views.
We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant with has views over the hills that are absolutely breathtaking. Both dinner and breakfast were very generous portions and lovely too. My only small gripe would be the instant coffee that came with breakfast, but everything else was brilliant - We’d happily stay again.

I made it here on my fourth day of walking St Oswald’s Way. I was tired and wet and I was greeted and ushered to a beautiful room. The room had everything I needed for the night and the bathroom even had a bath tub. The restaurant has a varied menu and I went for the pork souvlaki. Definitely worth trying! The atmosphere was welcoming and warm and I had a great conversation with a couple seated next to me. I went with pancakes for breakfast the before day 5 of my walk and that kept me going all day.
