Detailed Reviews
I stayed at Kichanga Lodge with my adult son for nine very enjoyable days. The resort is quite simple, which was one of the things we liked about it. The secluded private bungalows scattered in the grounds are very spacious with ceiling fans and mosquito nets on all the beds and are cleaned every day with a turn down service in the evenings. The staff are always smiling and were ready to help to make our stay as relaxed as possible. The reception staff were extremely helpful in organizing taxis for us on several occasions and helping with anything we asked. The buffet breakfast is varied and plentiful. We felt very fortunate to have such a stunning beach side area with plenty of sunbeds and shade to gaze at the receding or incoming tide. The complimentary tea, coffee and cakes every afternoon on the beach was a welcome touch. I would definitely recommend Kichanga Lodge if you are looking for somewhere to get away from it all, that is not pretentious and preserves the culture of Zanzibar with lovely staff to make every day special.

Our trip to Zanzibar was planned in 2 days and we weren't even sure if our booking was confirmed when we got on the plane. Everything turned out perfect. We were upgraded to an ocean view room and had half board. The bungalow was spacious and clean. An extra fan was provided. Large walk in wardrobe. Breakfast was plentiful and varied. Dinner was chosen from a set menu...always at least two meat/seafood and one vegetarian option. The menu was never repeated once in the 10 days we were there. Local and delicious food. We did have a traditional Swahili buffet on 2 occasions. The green mango soup was a winner! The beach is cleaned each morning and although the tide does go out quite a bit, it was lovely to walk in and bop around. The pool is clean and refreshing. Nice to have the odd lunch on the beach and walk at low tide all the way to The Rock Restaurant. The staff are a real asset to this lodge. They are friendly and helpful. Always smiling and trying to help. Zuleikha at reception was a star. Booking us excursions and taxis when needed. Also confirming and adjusting our airport transfer when it seemed like an airport shutdown was looming. On our last night with just 7 guests remaining they surprised us with a dinner and champagne next to the pool area in candlelight. What a way to end our trip! Would love to someday come back to this amazing place. PS: This might be in Africa, but the WiFi was exceptional!

We booked in here for a few nights after climbing Mt Kilimanjaro on the mainland to unwind and relax and we were not disappointed. Tastefully appointed in a very much African style and quietly tucked away with its own small beach separated by headlands it was just as expected. Rooms were basic but clean, the staff excellent and if anything the menu could be improved, ie buffet fine but have more than two choices and salad can consist of more than cucumber, tomato and carrot in a country where all grows abundantly. Overall though more than happy and would gladly stay again.

Lovely tranquil location with fantastic staff. We found a tortoise munching on some fruit outside our hut just after we arrived which was a lovely surprise. Lovely huts but would have been better with air conditioning. Even with a ceiling fan & extra standing fan we were too hot so we tied back the mosquito nets which helped a little & thankfully not may mozzies around but still too hot getting ready for dinner etc. Food was very good (coffee was terrible, though filter coffee generally is). Sea is good for rockpooling & thankfully they have a variety of sea shoes you can borrow but even when the tide was in it wasn’t good for swimming as a bit rough so you can only bob up & down & hope you don’t stand on a sea urchin of which there were a lot. We took a taxi across to Kae beach which was better for swimming (although a lot of weed) and seeing the sunset. Beware getting ripped off by taxi drivers and hotel will charge commission on airport drop offs so book online or haggle - we got $35 to airport having been charged that a couple of days earlier just to go to Kae beach! I went scuba diving with Buckannears in Pingwe (excellent healthy reefs and beautiful sandy beach for swimming). George & his staff couldn’t have been nicer & we really enjoyed our stay.

Very well and good stay in Kichanga Lodge with an incredible and magnific Team !
The food is excellent, the team is at the top, the views of the Indian Ocean are magnificent, the absolute calm in the bungalows with sea view as well as the small private hammock. I loved the spirit as well as the quality service going so far as to deploy the mosquito net in the evening in the room. Thank you all

Nice family hotel with a small pool and beautiful beach. It is a bit remote but the advantage is that no one bother you on the beach to buy tours or souvenirs. We spent 4 nights there and the staff was so kind (all of them) and In fact this is the real value of the hotel. Food was not good the first 2 days but then very tasty the next 2 days especially when it was suhaili food. Breakfast is good and it is a buffet. I do recommend this place.

+1
Just spent one night at the lodge, but would return. Staff was very helpful and professional. A wonderful open air main lodge on the Indian Ocean. Many private beach houses, with deluxe screened in beds, maid service and hot shower. The beach is private, stocked with a bar, a fresh water pool and a massage hut. The restaurant served a lovely breakfast and lunch options were fresh and delicious.

We wanted a quiet resort and a picturesque beach which we found here. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We didn't do many outings but stayed on the beach or by the pool as it was hot, muggy weather. Our one day in Stone Town was very hot but interesting and the resort could organise it for us.

It is a pleasant enough place. A little run down but average for Zanzibar. Friendly and very helpful staff. The food is average at best for the breakfast buffet with gone is gone attitude. Lunch is good with a good selection but then back to average for dinner, either buffet or parts of buffet put together as fixed menu.
Definitely a good 3 star hotel. 4 star .. I am not so sure.

To be honest, we never found ourselves on the beach at a time when you couldn't swim in the ocean. High and low tide occur at different times of day, so it depends when you go and when you want to be on the beach.
The bottom has clean sections but also quite a lot of urchins. The lodge will supply you with beach shoes if you don't have your own.
It’s a set menu at Kichanga Lodge. While there’s not much choice of cuisine, the food is nice and homely. On the days we had food at Kichanga Lodge, it was largely seafood made in local style. As for the drinks, it’s economical.
We (family of 4) went to the beach, rented a boat and boatsman to go snorkeling, played football with the staff etc. Our boys especially liked the quality of the WiFi (best in Tanzania)
Hey! We're vegetarian and there was quite a lot of fruit/cereals etc for breakfast. For dinner just specify your dietary requests and I'm sure they'll accommodate. Having said that I'd bring extras to fill in the gaps if I were you. Nearest decent supermarket is in Stone Town.
You'll LOVE Kichanga. It's my favourite resort in Zanzibar with a gorgeous beach and unforgettable sunrises!
"Some rooms are set back from the beach, so consider if you want to hear the ocean all night due to the open windows."Read full review
