Beautiful like the painting of a great master, Chateau de Mercues bears witness to eight centuries of history and culture in perfect harmony. Both a wine estate and a Relais & Chateaux hotel with a nice fine dining restaurant. Chateau de Mercues is a haven of peace in the heart of the Lot region.
Location : Good Chateau itself : Beautiful and good setting Accommodation: Poor, many rooms NO a/c Food : Quite good Service : Poor Overall, the Chateau is rather beautiful and set in well-maintained grounds with nice views. The problem is with its “software” - WIFI is very weak and majority of rooms has NO air-con so if you go there in summer, it can be extremely hot and uncomfortable, even at night. And they don’t bother to provide fans or other means to make your stay any better. In fact generally, the service, particularly at the reception, is rather pompous and unhelpful. It’s a real pity as the place has good potential but it’s let down by its lack of modernisation and attitude of some staff. Surely, an upgrade is needed to keep up with “Relais & Chateau”…

Best food from room service ever, wonderful hotel but I cannot recommend as our room never went below 30 degrees, no fans no protection from mosquitoes maybe some rooms are better ours was room 16,. They did bring us a very ineffective fan but that just reduced room temperature to 30 degrees before that at 10.00p.m. it was 34 degrees and yes that was hotter than it had been outside all day!!! So it may be beautiful but impossible to sleep. Such a shame

The location is great but the room was truly disappointing. Only a third of their rooms are upgraded and offer Air conditioning. Make sure you specify, otherwise the hotel will assign you any random room. Standards can vary greatly. We were there during a heat wave. Temperatures in our room reached 30C, even throughout the night. We asked to change rooms but they couldn’t accommodate us. We asked for a fan and they couldn’t provide this either. This establishment does not merit being part of Relais&Chateau.

Perched high on a promontory along the River Lot, this beautifully restored château/fort that originated in the 13th century, and repaired several times after the numerous wars through the ages, has all modern conveniences inside along with heavy timbered ceiling supports that appear to be hundreds of years old. According to the Château, the 24 rooms and 6 suites have each been restored to correspond with either when they were built or their historical importance. Our room (#20) was quite large with a beautiful view of the River Lot below in two different directions. In addition to having an excellent restaurant, a swimming pool, a tennis court, and three 21 speed hybrid bicycles for day rides, one can have a tasting tour of the excellent wines are made and bottled at the…

The buiding is as impressive as you will see in the pictures but the room we were given was in a terrible state, the carpets were threadbare and the stained the bathroom taps were old and rusty and quite frankly this ruined the whole experience however good the food and the people were. I did mention it and they were totally ambivalent and that was that. I would not stay here again!

The views from our room were breathtaking. Walking the grounds on this spring day was like being in a fairy tale, enchanting; the gardens and the river below were so beautiful. Our problem was that we were given a room downstairs u set a very busy kitchen. The decor of the room was modern and the amenities were all present, a large shower, a tub, 2 vanitiesin the bathroom but the bedroom area was small and narrow with not much room to move around. The noise from the kitchen located directly above this room kept us up until almost 1:00 am. We called management and they said it would stop. We even asked about the noise when we were shown the room and were told there was sound proofing. Turns out there was not.

After a very stressful two years this was the first self focussed trip we have taken. I had remembered Chateau de Mercues from our stay there almost 30 years ago and as we needed to overnight during a long trip the Lot and I had good memories of the Chateau, I decided that we should visit again. Both my wife and I were truly happy with our decision. It is a beautiful place, the service we received was impeccable. Already we have recommended Mercues to several friends.

This was certainly the biggest hotel room I have ever stayed in--you might want to use your cell phone to call from the bathroom to the bedroom. Comfortable bed, fantastic views, nice art deco furniture. I even had a private terrace! A few criticisms: the wifi was wonky, the showerhead was noisy and stingy, the bathroom window shutters were warped (which compromised privacy), and exterior wooden bits needed repainting. I could hear the neighbor's TV. Breakfast was not as good as expected (limited cereal selection in sealed plastic packets, scrambled eggs too salty, no cheese).
