Having stayed at some very nice backpackers' hostels in South America, where I had just arrived from, I was expecting more of North American hostels. La Maison du Patriote was a huge, huge, huge let-down. Although its location is incomparable (located right on one of the busiest and prettiest streets in Montreal), the hostel itself was a tremendous disappointment. The...

We stayed 2 nights and met some interesting people, the hostel is friendly and has good cooking facilities. Situated in a great spot in the old quarter we were able to walk and travel on the underground all around the island Wifi good we got a large deluxe room although the dorm arrangement seemed well thought out. Would recommend

This place is awesome ! So many other fellow travellers and a great dorm style room up top. It says 22 bed dorm but it has like all the beds with curtains and they made it into little rooms itself. Very cozy and helpful with a ton of information. I think it may be the cheapest hostel in montreal and...

We spent a week in La Maison du Patriote during FINA world masters swimming championships and Heavy Montreal. Hostel is clean, safe and comfortable. There is a lounge and a well-equipped kitchen. Wi-fi worked perfect. I would definetly go again. Highly recommended.

We stayed here for a week in August. We came to Montreal for the FINA World Masters Championships so we needed to stay longer and booked a private room. I really liked that the hostel is like a home! It's a small hostel and reception is there only for part of the day (from 9am to 6pm I guess) so...

Arriving in the summer evening into a cosy one bedroom that overlooks the streets of Old Montreal, I knew immediately that this place was going to be good. Add to that a fun atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff, superb resources (to make it more fun they were drawn onto the walls with chalk), and perfect location. The time of year...

Great location among plenty of shops, galleries and delicious cafes. Reasonable walking distance to the Metro station. The lounge room was a great space to chill out and meet other traveling folks. There are even musical instruments and sound equipment for you to jam out on! Fully equipped, clean kitchen to prepare your own meals. The dorms were well spaced...

I stayed here in late December for two nights. It wasn't the best. It's in a really nice location, being in old Montreal so it's very pretty. Even though the place is very clean and nicely decorated.. It's not very well run, there's only one staff member who most of the time wasn't around which isn't very convenient if you...

Positive points: If you are a more touristy than party person you are well served here in terms of location. Negative points: it's not as cheap as they say - there is a lot of fees you need to pay. They have a limited number of internet connections available. So, if you are not connected 24 h/day, you will not...

After a long day on a train from Toronto, I crashed here for two nights before heading back home in the states. They make you remove your shoes in front of the entrance which was fine with me. They were undergoing a little bit of painting in the living room. I slept in the male dorm which was fine except...

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
