I was on a flight to Seattle when I sat next to a woman who had spent a lot of time in Vancouver. I'd never been to Vancouver and she insisted that I if I had the chance. She recommended the Sylvia hotel, saying it is the place that she stays every time that she goes to Vancouver. I made... More

I can tell that you put a lot of thought into what you were going to write about and you did it well. You are correct, we will never try to be something that we are not and try to compete with other larger chain hotels. We are a heritage site and thanks for your opinion about getting the mix... This hotel has an ideal location, right next to Stanley park and the bay. My family and I walked out one day and walked around the park and to downtown. The next day we walked around Granville. This is the perfect way to see Vancouver. This hotel had a lovely place for breakfast/brunch and pretty rooms with lots of charm.... More

I enjoyed reading your review, short and to the point, covers off what other guests are interested in. Thank-you for mentioning that you enjoyed the Food and Beverage and views from the restaurant. The location is fantastic and close to everything in a quiet residential area. We hope that you will return soon. More

This hotel has such a greal location right by the sea. We were really pleased we had booked this from the moment we arrived. Hotel has great character. Staff were all really helpful and made us feel at home very quickly. Comfortable bed and pleasant room. Bar and restaurant were both good, we enjoyed the quality of the food and... More

Great to have a kitchen in the suites and if you're high enough up, great views of english bay. Can be pretty noisy street sounds at night with the windows open. Not fancy but all very comfortable and clean. Great service and accomodation of our bikes. Really we go here because of the history of the place, the history of... More

Having rooms with kitchens is a plus for guests that plan to stay for more than one night and cook in their room to save the costs of eating out each night. Room 801 is special, great views above the trees of English Bay and more space than most guest's need, that room is very large and rarely available as... More

This hotel is beautifully located, the staff are very friendly and helpful. I have read a number of reviews that talk about old and period. I found the hotel is in serious need of an update. There is old and stylish and just old. Thus falls in the latter camp and flaking paint and the very worn look makes it... More

Thanks for taking time to write a review and for staying with us. The beds are comfortable and the staff appreciate your comments about their service and friendliness. We are over 102 years old and it does not appeal to everyone taste, however we do thank-you for staying with us. More

I discovered this wonderful, historic hotel back in my younger days as an alternative to the expensive executive hotel where I was attending a conference. It is an old building with tons of personality and slow elevators and we truly love it here! It is an old apartment building right across from the beach. We come every summer with the... More

I stayed at the Sylvia in August with my wife, 2 twenty-something sons and our Wheaton Terrier. We are a pet friendly hotel and have been since 1960, in fact we are the only hotel in Vancouver that does not charge extra for pets. The location of the Sylvia Hotel is stellar. We really enjoyed being right across from the beach. We had our car but it was an easy walk to Stanly Park to ride the bikes. Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
A hodgepodge of landscapes, the West End combines verdant gardens and blocky modern architecture, with Victorian bits and Edwardian bobs in between. It is a paradise for takeout food, take-away coffee, and perhaps incongruously, some of Vancouver's most languid lines of beachfront. English Bay and Sunset Beach invite swimmers, strollers, and picnic-lovers to take in dusk settling over the water, or to jog along with the sunrise, offering breathtaking views at any time of day. The West End merges together so many looks and flavors probably because it functions a hub: its the leafy pit-stop between nightlife and entertainment venues along Davie Street, and the shopping paradise that is Robson Street, offering visitors beautiful parkland to rest on, and quick, easy food to re-fuel with in between ventures.
