Swagatam! Two different worlds, of beauty and yonder, of verdancy and subtlety. White sands beckon the blue-grey water on one side, and a leisurely flowing river of amber on the other. Branching out of the coastal mainland, a thin stretch of land, houses a secluded retreat, a sanctuary. To the explorer. To the ones who tread distances in search of sanity. Ones who saunter, despise agenda, eschew populous holiday destinations. Those who explore, escape, take a sabbatical, to find self, to rejoice, to celebrate, to seek absolute “nothingness”

Lovingly nestled between the Kavvayi backwaters and the Arabian Sea, we chanced upon “V Retreat” or “Valiyaparamba Retreat” - a gem of a getaway, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Located in Valiyaparamba Town (Kasargod District), Kerala, getting here is part of the scenic adventure. The nearest airport is in Kannur, followed by a 1 Hr 45 Min journey by road.
Ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway, or for groups of friends / Family who want to immerse themselves in nature for a few days, V Retreat has it all. The hospitality is impeccable, the cottages and rooms are neat and tidy (very important in seaside locales), and the landscaped Gardens are well maintained. The food is mostly the local cuisine, cooked with local ingredients…..Delicious and fulfilling!!
While lazing around the whole day on the beach is the preferred option, those who want to explore the place a bit can go boating or kayaking at #Kavvayistories (a 45 min auto ride from the resort) or take a boat ride on the backwaters bang opposite the resort. A word of caution for those wanting to splash around in the private beach stretch behind the resort – the sea can get a bit rough in the late afternoon and evenings. Use the lifejackets the resort provides and make sure you are in a group looking out for each other as there are no lifeguards around.
A big shout out to the owners and hosts Mr John and Mrs Shirley, and their dedicated Staff Mohanan, Raju and Gauri, who did everything possible to make our stay so amazing.

This retreat has a excellent location , beach on one side and just cross road and backwaters on that side. There are not many people on the beach. You get a feel of real interior kerala culture. we enjoyed tasty local home made food here like idiyyapum , vadlappum, kadle curry etc .
Rooms were clean. Staff demonstrated very good hospitability and are welcoming. If you want to experience peace and serenity out of busy , noisy city life, then this is the best place.

Situation of the hotel is stunning, on the left side BackWaters and on the right sea…
Very intimate place, very good food, I loved the fish and vegetarian dishes. Staff very nice and attentive. Asked them for everything and they will kindly do what they can to accomplish your wish. The area is just amazing. The hotel owners prepared also a campfire on the beach, it was unique ! Thank you so much.

Beautiful place, with beach on one side and the backwaters on the other side. Very remote all together. Good get away from city life. While swimming make sure that the season is safe to swim. The manager of the place took great care of us and made our stay memorable, so a big thanks to him. The accommodation is basic, don't expect any luxury. Food served was local and delicious. Good holiday stay for families and groups of friends. Unique place in Kerala.

A very difficult place to find it is vital to have the phone number of the manager before you set off. We called him, gave the phone to the tuktuk driver and eventually we arrived.
As the driver pulled into the driveway my wife and I both said, simultaneously, no this can't be it!
The downsides first......probably triggered by our expectation of the 4000rps per night full board that we'd paid in advance.
A rather dilapidated single storey building surrounded by coconut palms and agricultural debris. It does have a wood store type shack that is used for the dining area, but luckily we weren't asked to use it.
The rooftop terrace has now been reopened but it is reached by an unlit, steep rickety wooden staircase and the terrace roof has disappeared, I assume it suffered some storm damage in the past however a temporary material roof has been tied up to give you some shelter from falling palm branches and coconuts.
The veranda at the rear of the property, where the bedrooms are located is shabby and covered in sand and weeds growing between the slabs. It is has sunk in areas too making it a little dangerous in the dark.
The room was probably the biggest disappointment though. It had not been cleaned well recently and the window nets were stuck on by an assortment of gaffer tape and velcro. The old rusty metal wardrobe was filthy and we had to wipe it out and line it with plastic bags before we could use it.
The bathroom was adequate but the wall tiles were only staying on the wall by luck and neither of us dared touch the tiles by the shower incase they all fell off. The hot water never did work on any of the four days although the manager did bring us pots of hot water in the evening for a bucket bath.
The upsides....
The situation, although in a poor state of repair and cleanliness, is in an idyllic setting sandwiched between the Indian Ocean and the backwater.
The beach is endless and empty of people, the ocean is rough, with strong tides and currents especially when whipped into a frenzy by the strong winds in the afternoon. A very difficult place to swim even if you are a strong swimmer. We managed to spend plenty of time enjoying ourselves in the water but mostly just jumping through the crashing waves. A dangerous place if you are not fit and strong.
The backwater is very quiet with almost no water traffic except a regular ferry service. This is a great way to see the whole area, which is huge, without spending a fortune. I think we spent 4 hours travelling all the way to Payyanur and back for 48rps in total.
The food was excellent, the lady cook (sadly I've forgotten her name)was very good and we ate different local dishes every mealtime. Getting tea or coffee always seemed a bit of a trial although it did materialise eventually.
Vijay, the manager, went out of his way to make the best of our visit and was always asking if we were happy, but didn't really want any constructive feedback.
Conclusion
Would I go back? No, would I recommend it? No. In truth, there are better places, easier to get to, cleaner, better maintained with better views of the ocean and backwaters at half the price. Although I was really looking forward to going there I'd rather have stayed where we were at Thottada Beach.

Pros: The location is very beautiful. The beach is endless and empty and only 20 meters away from the accommodation with backwaters in front.
The staff is friendly and very helpful. They provide 3 times a day delicious simple Keralan food.
Contras: The place is dangerous because of falling coconuts. So you cannot use the terrace. You have to stay on the porch.
The rooftop is not in use. Food is served in a cramped open shed with a floor of loose sand where the chair legs sink.
Because there us no shelter from the sun on the concrete roof of the rooms, the rooms are very hot.
Hot water is on request and in the third room only available in a bucket.
The offered canoe trip is limited to a lap around the lake. There is no safety equipment on board.

What a fantastic place - 20 metres from the fabulous Arabian Sea beach with local fisherman providing the entertainment between dips in the sea. In the other direction 20 metres to the Backwaters and fabulous sunrises over the mussel farms . Apart from that you can arrange canoe rides with local people and also take a trip on the local ferry. We were in the house 40 metres down the road which was fine but it was bliss to be able to take meals on the cool roof of the main building. However the highlight was that we arrived to share with the locals their bi-annual Theyyem festival - what a privilege! Make sure you get to one in North Kerala if you can. The stand in staff were excellent and Abis English improved

We stayed here for four days and wished we could have stayed longer. Located on an island between the Arabian Sea and the backwater lagoons is is easily reached by rickshaw or ferry from Payannur. The rooms are basically furnished but spotlessly clean and food is served in an area above the rooms with great views over the lagoon and out to sea. The South Indian food is excellent - really delicious and varied.
The atmosphere is very relaxed and because the empty white sandy beach is only 30 metres away we were able to take a dip in the wonderfully warm sea at any time.
The host, Mr.Ranjith, looked after us superbly and nothing was too much trouble. He organised our canoe trip, advised about ferries and places to visit. Local people are really friendly and love to have a chat and seemed genuinely pleased to see us.
A brilliant place to relax and get away from the hustle & bustle of travel or the cities. We highly recommend it.
