Nestled in a captivating location, Grand Velas Riviera Maya enchants with its soft white beaches and a vibrant array of activities suitable for all. While the hotel exudes luxury with its spacious, well-appointed rooms and a plethora of amenities, including a luxurious spa and engaging live music, some travelers have expressed concerns over the value, citing the high cost of extras.
However, guests consistently celebrate the hotel's cleanliness and the staff's exceptionally attentive service, which contribute to an inviting and lively atmosphere.

Detailed Reviews
This is the best all inclusive property we have been to without question. The service was top notch, the place was full of fun and the food was really great. We have plenty of great restaurants in NYC and Sen Lin left me leaving dinner wanting to go back the next night.
We originally booked in the Zen but quickly moved to the Ambassador upon arrival. The Zen is remote and requires a shuttle to everything except the spa / Sen Lin restaurant. If you are looking for sublime quiet with no concept of being at an ocean resort- stay here. We found it easier to take a shuttle to dinner or the spa as opposed to taking a shuttle for literally everything else.
The amenities and rooms at the ambassador are a little dated, but huge, clean and well maintained. The property itself is stunning. The balconies really need a little more furniture they are so big they look empty!
Service was 5* - outside of trying to secure late checkout on the last day, but I’ll get to that in a second. The staff is accommodating and gracious and there aren’t people just standing around. anyone who complains about the service here has issues or has literally never been to a resort in the Caribbean, ever. They are polite and they hustle.
Regarding checkout: We spoke to multiple people at the concierge about even a 1pm checkout and they said it simply “wasn’t possible” to leave the room later than 12pm, even though we knew other families who were able to on that same day. That aside, this place REALLY needs a shower / changing / locker facility for those who have late flights but still want to enjoy the resort until departure. Every high end hotel we have ever been to offers this.
My only really complaint about the resort in general is the water activities. I expect to pay extra for motorized sports - but not for a paddle board, kayak or to have to make a reservation for a bicycle.
Also this is a pool centric resort. The beach here while beautiful is fairly narrow and too rough / rocky to swim in. If you want to do more than sit in a lounge chair on the beach I would go somewhere else.
There are a ton of “show” activities at the resort on a daily basis. Magic shows, soccer games, singing, acrobatic type stuff, in addition to beach bbqs, fire shows, pirate shows, in the evening. There are also water activities for the kids and things like a trampoline and rock climb wall. If your kids are not teenagers these will all be extremely entertaining.
If you’re kids are older, or you are looking for nightlife this probably isn’t your spot.
All of this said we would go back in a heartbeat. It’s a beautiful, well oiled machine that didn’t disappoint.

Thank you very much, Rob, for sharing with us your fondness on your overall vacation experience at Grand Velas. To admire your 5 Star rating and knowing that you would return "in a heartbeat" means that we will surely have the honor and pleasure of hosting you again in the future. I am glad to know that despite the "minor room for improvement," you do perceive our hotel's operation as a "well oiled machine that didn´t disappoint." We own a week at this resort, but haven't been in 14 years. Going back, the property and rooms were in almost as good of shape as they were when they were brand new (when we bought). This is a beautiful resort. The rooms are spacious and palatial. The grounds are immaculately kept. But the staff is probably the most impressive thing, which is kind of amazing, considering how big of a resort it is. Every time we called the front desk for something, whether it was to bring ice or pillows or fixing something, they were there within a few minutes. Viri and Gabby, Who do crafts and other fun things for the kids, are fantastic. They are super kind, sweet, and fun. Our kids absolutely loved them, and we felt great with leaving our kids with them. Jordan, Who is on the entertainment staff, was a constant source of fun for our kids. They truly made friends with him, and he provided them lots of laughs and fun. They clean the room every day, including doing the dishes (which is good, since there is no dish washer), sweeping, changing the sheets and towels.
This is the most well stocked kitchen I've experienced at a time share, and the things we felt there weren't enough of they brought us more.
One disappointment was that they charged us for using the amenities - gym, mini golf, tennis. We are owners, and owners apparently get amenities for free when staying during their normal week. But we had traded in during a different week because of the coronavirus. When you are there on a different week than the one you own, they charge you for amenities. That was pretty disappointing, considering we've paid over $10,000 in maintenance fees for this property over the years.

Thank you very much, Christian, for visiting this beautiful region and sharing your positive impressions with the world. In reading your detailed comments, it is apparent that your experience was at an entirely different property. At Grand Velas, our suites do not come equipped with kitchens as we are a 100% All-Inclusive Resort. Nor do we have in our employ the Kids Club personnel that you kindly highlighted by name. But for us, the most important aspect of your review is that your family enjoyed themselves during their trip to Mexico, and on behalf of the entire hospitality industry in Riviera Maya, I thank you for making the trip. Until next time, sir, we wish you and your lovely family a safe and happy summer in Phoenix, Arizona. Thank you, RODOLFO GONZALEZ DIRECTOR GENERAL GRAND VELAS RIVIERA MAYA

We have been to this resort many times, but have stayed home because of covid for the past year. It has always been our favorite place in the world for beautiful views, delicious food, and outstanding service. Everything you could want is included so you can relax and enjoy yourself during your stay. This includes basically any food you could want at any time of day or night and most drinks too. Pool bars, pool side wait staff, ocean side wait staff, room service, casual restaurants, buffets, and formal restaurants. There are even snacks in the spa.
Just in case eating isn't your ONLY vacation priority, they also have a piano bar, karaoke, teens club, kids club, non motorized sports and various activities each day. This is more of a relaxing hotel than an entertainment venue, but I feel like they do a good job keeping paradise from feeling boring for anyone that needs some daily activities.
Then covid happened and my family (spouse + 2 young kids) have been stuck in our house for a year. We have taken covid very seriously, and are finally venturing out now that my husband and I are vaccinated. I was incredibly impressed with how very *normal* the hotel was able to make life feel while we were there. All of the staff wear medical masks and face shields and everything in the hotel is cleaned frequently. They encourage hand sanitizer, shoe sanitizer, social distancing, and masks for the guests, but they no longer require it strictly. I would estimate that half of the guests wore masks while we were there (including us), but it was also very easy to stay a safe distance away since the hotel is so large and they are not booking to capacity yet. They provided hand sanitizer in each room and a packet of sanitizing wipes for guests among a million other small things to help encourage effortless healthy choices. Also, they provided easy onsite covid testing, which the US currently requires for re-entry.
I was amazed to find out that the hotel was hit by 2 hurricanes and a tropical storm last season. They have fixed all visible damage to the ocean areas, though the beach is a little shorter in areas, but I believe they are still working to fix the jungle/zen area before they reopen. In the meantime, the Spa is still open and amazing. Even if you don't do a full treatment, it's worth it to go to the Water Ritual through their facilities and really relax.
I am so excited that I get to return to paradise again and that my family was able to travel safely to this resort!!

Thank you so much, Sarah, for sharing with the world your detailed account of what Grand Velas provided for you and your lovely family. As a team, we admire and respect all of the precautions that you have taken as a family to reach this point. Now, twelve months later, your need to escape was fully realized, and you were able to pamper yourselves with all the wonderful services and amenities that you have come to know and love. And allow me to say that your firm seal of approval on our sanitary protocols means a lot to us and to many other travelers who are contemplating the best and safest resort to invest their well-earned time and resources. In saying that, we look forward to hosting you more often as you make up for your one-year absence. And after reading your informative review, your decision on where to go is now more obvious than ever. As always, Sarah, we continue to place ourselves at your faithful service. Take care, my friends, RODOLFO GONZALEZ DIRECTOR GENERAL GRAND VELAS RIVIERA MAYA

Normally I am not this kind of review person but since I was reading all these excellent comments here while looking for a great holiday location, I think I need to alert now other travelers, as we ended up very disappointed with this resort.
Although the resort itself is quite beautiful, we were expecting much more for the high amount of money with spent there.
Our room was musty with old and worn down furnishings, without any lovely touches, just a cold, simple and borring room. We payed even more for having a plunge pool on the terrace which we unfortuneately did not use more than once as it was never cleaned, even we had requested it a couple of times.
In general, the service we experienced at pool, beach, in the restaurants and lobby was forced, often unorganized and even unprofessional, especially when a group of male pool staff talked about me, not knowing that I am fluent in spanish.. That was a very uncomfortable situation for me which I even did not tell my boyfriend until we were back home, in order to avoid any greater discussions.
Our "Personal Concierge" we exactly saw twice: Upon arrival and then during Check out, when she was evidently expecting her tip...
Nightlife? Does not exisit at all at this resort There are several bars but when there are not closed , they are empty without any bar atmosphere. The most ridiculos is that there is a so called "Piano bar", but there was no piano player during our complete stay.
The daytime activities - a real hit and miss. Often we arrived at the announced time and place, but the activity staff arrived late or even did not show up.
When requesting dinner reservations at the lobby desk, we always got the answer that there was no availability, really hard to believe as the hotel seemed on a very low occupancy. Then during dinner, we found most of the tables empty... Also it was annoying that the hotels advertises 8 restaurants and once you are there, you find out that most of the restaurants are closed..
In general, a very unhappy experience and really not worth the money!
We wanted to express our dissatisfaction to the Hotel Manager during our stay, so we asked for him in the lobby, but we did not see or hear anything of him during our complete stay...
I have stayed before at the Rosewood Mayakoba and Belmond Maroma where you will definitely have a better and more luxurious experience.

Thank you very much for taking a moment to share with me your concerns over your much anticipated Grand Velas vacation. I apologize for not living up to your lofty expectations in the area of service and accommodations. You can expect that I will meet with my department heads to discuss the lapses in service that you are describing in order to reinforce in them our philosophy of gracious hospitality. And you can also be assured that one of the topics that will be addressed is proper dialogue and etiquette when attending to the needs of our valued guests. We have already audited the quality status of your suite and have not found any signs of "old" or "worn down furnishings." Quite the contrary, your 1,100 sq ft unit consists of the luxury amenities that are found in all of our suite classes, including our Presidential and Imperial Suites. But we will continue to investigate the cause of your disappointment. Concerning the lack of ambiance that you noticed during your stay, unfortunately, we found ourselves at a very low level of occupancy, which is somewhat common just after the New Year's celebrations. The lack of fellow guests with which to interact will perhaps alter the overall vibe of the resort but, I can favorably say that now, in February, we are running a higher than usual occupancy rate resulting in many other guests on property. I do hope to have the pleasure of meeting you in person during a future visit to Riviera Maya to show you, personally, all the positive aspects that previous guests have raved about. And in the meantime, I place myself at your service for all your future needs and requests. Thank you, RODOLFO GONZALEZ DIRECTOR GENERAL GRAND VELAS RIVIERA MAYA

In the midst of the world falling off its axis, I was able to escape to the Grand Velas Riviera Maya with my friend Kendell for a few days to celebrate his birthday. It was the most unforgettable trip from the minute we arrived to when we were dropped off at the airport. The service was impeccable from the creative way the linens were given to us at arrival to clean our hands, the surprised birthday balloons and desserts sent to our room for my friend to the amazing food at the various AAA 5 diamond restaurants and the extreme care (wearing mask and shields, having disinfectant mats to wipe your shoes off at every entrance, hand sanitizer everywhere, social distancing implemented, temperature checks taken every time you go to a restaurants, and the rooms are sanitized before being assigned) everyone took to make sure were all safe and they were complying with the Covid protocols. The staff is best in the business and they went above and beyond to make sure our stay was one of the best vacations I have ever had. Our amazing concierge Santiago is a ROCKSTAR. He was so attentive and made sure all of our needs was taken care of. Shout-out to Carolina who took great care of us and took some great pics for me. Valeria, Roman, William and Rudi, you guys are amazing and made our experience unforgettable!
Due to COVID only the grand class section of the resort is open but it’s immaculate and the views are to die for. There’s a great pool bar and the cabanas on the beach were magical. I enjoyed many delicious cocktails and meals (the tacos are so good) by the pool and beach. One of my favorite restaurants was Piaf which basically took me back to my favorite city in the world, Paris. The décor and ambience was breathtaking and the food decadent. The activities staff is also topnotch - I wanted to go jet skiing and they didn’t have any available at the resort at the time but they tracked down a jet ski from another location for us. We had so much fun and that sea green ocean was beautiful. I also went paddle boarding for the first time and they gave us a great lesson. On my last day I had a chance to get an unbelievable massage from the spa. It was outside on a cliff overlooking the ocean and let me tell you, I passed out from the masseuse’s gifted hands and got the best sleep of my life.
Blue Dreams transportation took us to and from the resort and airport and they had amazing service including, sanitizing our luggage before it was put in the vehicle.
Special thank you to Tulio and Lizette who coordinated my trip and made it an experience of a lifetime! I can’t rave about this resort enough. I have literally been trying to figure out how to get back there ASAP since I left. If you’re looking for an escape and want a safe place to go during this pandemic, look no further because the Grand Velas Riviera Maya is everything vacation dreams are made of.

We recently returned from a wonderful family vacation with our 2 young children (2 & 5yrs old). The food was quite good (better than most all inclusive resorts) but by the end of the trip we were pretty sick of it. The best part of the trip, by far, was the excellent service we received. Our concierge in the Grand Class section, Christian, went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. He took great care of us, especially our boys who adored him. We arrived to balloons and treats, the next night he left a tent in our room for the kids, and another afternoon he drew them bubble bath with balloons in it! Levi was our favorite server on the beach and Daniel at the Ambassador pool put so much care into the drinks he made which we really appreciated.
The biggest downside for families with young children is that the restaurants are all quite formal and don't open until 6pm each evening which was a little late for our 2 year old (especially since the meals can be quite long). We did room service on the last night and the kids loved it!

Thank you very much, Jennifer, for bringing the kids with you to enjoy the Grand Velas vacation experience together. Reading your glowing comments on your children's happiness makes me proud of the dynamic young women and men who make friends of the little ones while fulfilling their dreams with great activities, amazing entertainment, and wholesome fun for the entire family. Concerning our dinner hours, the earliest that we operate our dining venues is at 6 pm. However, if there is anything that my casual restaurants, snack bars, and suite service can prepare for the kids in the meantime, we will certainly make it happen. And we do it with the hope that you and your lovely family make the trip from Buffalo, NY, a yearly tradition. Thank you again, Jennifer, for entrusting Grand Velas to provide you with "The BEST service!" You can be assured that Cristian, Levi, and Daniel, will remember your young ones and continue to light up their days with their energetic personalities. As always, we place ourselves at your service for all your special requests, RODOLFO GONZALEZ DIRECTOR GENERAL GRAND VELAS RIVIERA MAYA

My husband and I visited Grand Velas in October after re-booking 3 times. We decided to take the leap of faith and went over his birthday weekend. It was absolutely incredible and we had a wonderful time!
Safety protocols were well thought out and consistent through the whole resort. The hotel helped us book transportation to and from the airport and the drivers were friendly and sanitized our luggage. The luggage was again sanitized when we arrived at the resort.
Carolina was our concierge and she was amazing. She set up so many special treats for us throughout the weekend for my husband's birthday and was available all the time for questions we had.
The resort is very large but since there were so few guests only one part was open, however both of the pool areas were open. The hotel did a tremendous job of making the experience great and giving everyone personalized attention. We got to know Norma, Jorge, Willian, and Ana very well and they were so gracious. Also, ALL of the food is AMAZING!
We would 100% stay at Grand Velas again and encourage anyone who may be thinking of a trip but unsure of the safety to consider this resort!

Thank you so much, Athena, for finally taking that "leap of faith" and spending your husband's birthday with us at Grand Velas Riviera Maya. As director, I am delighted to learn that you felt very safe from the moment you arrived at the airport. Knowing that you noticed that our safety protocols "were well thought out and consistent through the whole resort" reflects beautifully on the training and investment that we made to make your stay a stress-free and fulfilling experience. And having dedicated professionals on-hand such as Carolina, Norma, Ana, Jorge, and Willian makes it much more easier for you to sit back and enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of the resort. On behalf of all the young women and men who work as a team, I thank you for sharing your excellent recommendation of Grand Velas with the world and wish you and your husband the best of the best this Holiday Season. As always, we place ourselves at your faithful service, RODOLFO GONZALEZ DIRECTOR GENERAL GRAND VELAS RIVIERA MAYA

We just returned and had the most incredible visit. I think I am spoiled for life! We stayed in the Grand section and loved our plunge pool that overlooked the beautiful ocean!!
Carolina and Diana were incredible room hosts, making sure everything was perfect during our stay--with dining suggestions and reservations, and checking in throughout the day.
Daniel was SO fun with salsa lessons and zumba class on the beach. He even came in early to host a private class for us to accommodate our schedule.
Lois hooked us up poolside! He never let a drink get empty and always showed up at the perfect moment with a menu or chips and guacamole for us! Absolutely fantastic service.
Everywhere we turned, cleaning and safety protocols were being handled beautifully and we felt 100% safe the entire time we were there. All of the staff was so eager to accommodate our needs and provide the absolute best service imaginable. This resort is a no-brainer! Absolutely book!

Janelle, the most crucial goal for us, apart from your outstanding level of satisfaction, is your health and well-being. Those two essential elements were well-described in your enlightening review. Having the peace of mind to delve into all the amenities and activities that we offer is truly worth its weight in gold. I think this could be my most favourite hotel, from the moment you step out of the transfer from the airport you are welcomed by friendly staff, check in was a breeze which is what you need after a long flight. We arrived late at night so once we were shown to our room it was straight to bed for us, excited to explore in the morning and explore we did!
This hotel is outstanding from the rooms to the grounds to the pools but special mention to all of the staff, we did not encounter one member of staff who did not greet you with a smile. The staff here can not do enough to help you and nothing seems too much trouble.
It normally takes us a few days to settle in to a holiday and be able to relax, this hotel takes it up a notch from the very first day we felt so relaxed I've never been to a resort like it, pure bliss!
My son thoroughly enjoyed the kids club and loved the teen club where he could come and go as he liked, the activities were brilliant as were the evening shows and pool entertainment, the entertainment staff were just fantastic.
Myself and my mother in law visited the Spa once for treatments and the second time to have our hair styled, both visits were good, the spa is outstanding and treatments were amazing I thoroughly recommend if you get the opportunity to experience the spa do it!!
All the restaurants were fantastic, we were always well looked after and food was outstanding. We especially loved the catch of the day down at the beach was a great experience to watch the boat come in and the fresh fish taken to be cooked.
Special mention to Israel who looked after us at the Ambassador pool, nothing was too much trouble from finding loungers for us, moving umbrellas to keep us in the shade with out us asking, he knew when we needed a cocktail even before we did (the bloody marys were outstanding) he really looked after us which we very much appreciated. A mention also to Tide from the Ambassador pool, so friendly and also when needed looked after us so well.
Michelle our concierge was such a sweet girl, always checking to make sure we needed anything, again nothing too much trouble from sorting dining reservations to long chats with my father in law!!
Amy Negrete Guest Relations was fantastic, alway stopped for a chat whenever she saw you to make sure everything was ok, she arranged a beach dinner for our family which blew us away absolutely fantastic and certainly a meal to remember, thank you so much. And thank you for giving us some laughs in winding Michelle up!!
Israel great bar tender, he worked in the piano bar until he was moved to the bar in the Zen, he greeted us by name and remembered what we liked to drink so each time we were served by him our drinks were ready. Great customer service.
There is certainly something very special about this hotel and it is down to every member of staff, they all appear genuinely happy to work at the Grand Velas and this shines through.
Thank you to all for making us feel like VIP's, and making our first stay at the Grand Velas so special, we can't wait to return this July/August.

On behalf of Amy, Michelle, Tayde, and both Israels, I wholeheartedly thank you and your lovely family for making the trip, trans-Atlantic, all the way from Newcastle, England, to spend your well-earned holiday time with us. In reading and appreciating your wonderful comments, it certainly appears that each member of your family found their particular niche and special interest. Whether it was a Spa Day for the ladies, Kids and Teens clubs for your son, or just a friendly chat between your father-in-law and the staff, we feel that we have something for everyone. And as director, I couldn´t be happier to learn that what you felt soon after your late arrival was our version of "Pure Bliss." We look forward to hosting you again later in July. I am sure that you are in touch with Amy and that your arrival will be just as smooth as it was on this occasion. As always, my friends, we continue to place ourselves at your faithful service. Cheers! RODOLFO GONZALEZ DIRECTOR GENERAL GRAND VELAS RIVIERA MAYA

We just got back from Grand Velas Riveria Maya. This place receives five stars for a reason! This has been our second trip to this particular property and we have also been to the Grand Velas in Puerta Vallarta. The resort is first class and consistent across the board on terms of cleanliness, friendliness ,great food, accommodations and exceptional service.
Our concerige, Carolina, was beyond extraordinary. She was so helpful with everything from making dinner and spa reservations to covid testing arrangements. She was masterful at "making everything easy". She found us at the pool the first day just to stop by and chat. When we mentioned offhand that it was our anniversary, we were surprised with special dessert at dinner and a fully decorated room with balloons and rose petals. She also left a very warm personal note that she had wrote based on our visit. We haven't had a concerige ever do that before.
The whole staff is very friendly, warm and attentive. The resort looks like it's off a postcard and is spotless. Although some of restaurants were closed due to the number of guests, they would alternate the schedule so we didn't have to eat at the same place twice. We thought they went above and beyond with safety protocal regarding covid. All staff wore masks and face shields which I am sure is uncomfortable and hot but it didn't diminish their attitudes. Hand sanitizer, touch less menus, antiseptic floor mats, temperature checks were the norm. Kudos for making the best of a tough situation.
Special shout out to Pablo for his entertainment as well as Luis, Taye and Oscar at the pool. Took great care of us and we wanted for not. There will be no unwelcome surprises when you visit here. This is a luxury resort that will exceed your expectations.
