We very much enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Casa del Balam. Our two-bedded room was spacious and Cesar kept it spotless. One of the highlights of the hotel is the beautiful interior courtyard with trees and vines overhead. It was a great spot for breakfast every morning with excellent service provided by Sebastian, who quickly learned we like lots...

Nice staff. Wonderful location to everything in historical centro Merida. Room was clean. AC worked and shower water was hot. Wifi, like everyone says, was spotty and staff was working on installing a new router when we were leaving in late Jan. Solid place at about $100 USD for 3 adults.

Our twin bedded room was good sized and comfortable. Aircon efficient but not needed at night in February. Clean bathroom with easy to operate shower. Some noise from fridge but none from street as reported by others. A rigmarole if you want to open the fridge - call to get it unsealed and unlocked then give credit card details. Never...

Excellent room, very spacious, very clean, nice colonial style furniture. Well located but very quiet, service was impeccable. A real old-style Mexican hotel, not high on swimming pools and other amenities.

A hotel with a good location to visit the city centre. Within walking distance of Paseo Montejo. Very clean and comfortable. Friendly staff. Avoid room 105. There is a spot light just in front of the window switched on the whole night.

As part of the toilet amenities this hotel provides ear plugs and for a good reason because there is a lot of noise here. The ventilation system is noisy around the clock, especially if the air condition is also on. Our room was in direct contact with the open air so there was noise from traffic and music in the...

Apart from one incident with a staff member this would have rated excellent. First the bad bit. The bar fridge was locked and we asked if it could be unlocked so we could put our own drinks in it, well the "Lady" (We think it was the manager) came up and took everything out of the fridge and threw them...

I loved this place. The hotel, its inner atrium, the grounds, and the interior landscaping - they all add up to a tranquil and stylish place to stay, and, in our case, to hang out a lot in the back yard patio with the pool and surrounded by beautiful flowering plants. The staff was gracious, our room was large, and...

The Casa Balam is in the perfect location, no more then 3 blocks from everything. As soon as you arrive at the curb you know this place is going to be great. Before we could get off of the cab the bellhop was getting our luggage from the cab and then walked us to the front deck inside an amazing...

I searched many hotels before deciding on Casa del Balam (House of the Jaguar). My wife and I agree that it is the loveliest, friendliest hotel we have ever experienced. Service goes beyond what we expected. I told them about my bad back and they gave me a chair with a slanted back. Every morning we sit on the patio...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa del Balam is one of the oldest and most distinguished hotels in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula, it's also one of the few original Mexican Art Deco houses left in the city. The hotel was built in 1970 incorporating facets of the original home of Fernando Barbachano Peon, pioneer of Tourism in Mexico. His daughter, Ms. Carmen Barbachano Gomez Rul (who was also involved on the family business), left the original facade and selected the name of "Casa del Balam" (Mayan words for "house of the jaguar") to honor his father nickname "balam" due to his visionary sharp business mind. Ms. Barbachano was very devoted of the colonial period and decorated the house accordingly. Big wooden furniture, rocking chairs and wrought iron accessories were part of her fine selection. She had envisioned a place where every touch could softly spoke of the serene ambiance of the city, and where friends could be made instead of just mere clients. When looking at the amazing interior of this Casona and experiencing the warm specialized service of its personnel, one can easily understand that Ms. Barbachano did accomplish her desire of uniqueness, and in a very exquisite way! ... more   less
