I recently had the pleasure of being in Oaxaca for a working seminar on Mezcal and stayed at Casa Machaya. What a neat hidden treasure this B & B is. Situated on a gorgeous hillside overlooking a small valley and the mountains that surround Oaxaca. The Casa is large, and completely furnished with all necessities that one could want for...

My girlfriend and I stayed at Casa Machaya for 10 days at the beginning of September, and we had the best time, thanks to Alvin and Arlene (and their adorable dog Tito). My girlfriend had been to Oaxaca before but the trip was a first for me, and Casa Machaya was the perfect choice for accommodation: close enough to downtown...

Casa Machaya was the perfect choice for my four year old daughter and I, when we spent two weeks in Oaxaca last August. Our accommodations were comfortable, spacious, cheerful and tastefully decorated but the best thing about Casa Machaya were the Starkmans who were exceptionally gracious hosts and very knowledgeable. They went above and beyond what I have experienced at...

We returned from a month long fabulous vacation in Mexico, most of it spent in Oacaxa. A major contributing factor was our stay at Casa Machaya and conversations with its gracious hosts, Alvin and Arlene Starkman. Up in the highlands of Oaxaca City, a short cab ride (provided by the Starkman's) to the historic center of town, a portion of...

Casa Machaya was an excellent place for our family to stay in Oaxaca. The space was very comfortable and the hosts were superb. Alvin and Arlene were very knowledgeable and great resources for all of our questions. We highly recommend Casa Machaya.

This place is great. Alvin and Arlene are wonderful hosts and very knowledgeable. We had basically an entire floor of their home -- bedroom, bath, kitchen, patio, private entrance. We were greeted with snacks and mescal, even at 10:00pm when we arrived. They do not actually serve breakfast, but every day the kitchen is resupplied with coffee, tea, fresh fruit,...

We had a great experience after the the 4-5 inch hail storm that greeted us. Alvin & Arlene were gracious since we were late due to the storm. Over the next several days we relied on Alvin's knowledge to see some great locales. We went to the black pottery area, zocalo, saw artisans, had great food and overall great experience....

Comfortable, apartment-like setting, including separate kitchen and own entrance, in a lovely home nestled in the hills on the outskirts of the city of Oaxaca. Breakfast supplies are provided (but make your own). Very personalized service by Alvin and Arlene sets this place apart, Alvin drives you into town each morning and you take a taxi back at night (15-20...

My wife and I spent a month at Casa Machaya, and couldn't have been happier with our accommodations and the considerate attention of our hosts, Alvin and Arlene Starkman. They made us feel at home from the moment we arrived, and went out of their way to provide both advice regarding restaurants, shopping and museums in Oaxaca as well as...

“We stayed in the main guest level. Since we were a couple only, we didn't use the small extra bedroom that's part of it. If you are travelling with another couple or older children, rent the second independent suite upstairs (which Arlene showed us for future reference).”
