We stayed here for a week in early December, just before the high-season kicks in. This small family-owned hotel is located in central Zihua, close to Playa la Madera, with a well-maintained pool and spacious rooms. We chose this place because of the glowing TA recommendations you see here, and we found them to be accurate. The owner, Edison, worked in the U.S. for 16 years and speaks very good English. He’s helpful and friendly, which is probably one of the biggest draws. You can’t beat the rates. We paid 700 pesos/night (about US$50/night) for one of the smaller suites, which was really spacious, with AC, overhead fan in the bedroom, living room with balcony, lots of storage in open shelves and closet. They advertise that the wi-fi is strongest near the pool and in common areas, but we had no problem connecting in our room. There was a kitchen area with sink, stove, fridge, cups, and glasses, and for US $10/night more, they will supply kitchenware. There’s a charge for a coffee pot unless you’re staying a week or more. Bathroom included a large shower; the hot water takes a few minutes. Since some TA reviewers said it was super clean or “spotless,” I wouldn’t want someone to be disappointed, so I’ll add that this is an older place and the furnishings are a bit worn, run-down. . . chips, stains here and there, and the bathroom tiles and sink were discolored. It is hard to keep these "spotless," and they were not shining and spotless. Some reviewers wrote that the walk to the beach was five minutes. I’m a leisurely walker and it was still under 10 minutes and about the same to the town center and Playa Municipal and the Plaza de Armas and the basketball court where local events are held. I like being in the town. . . but, if going again, I’d also consider staying on Playa la Madera if there are places at or close to beach level. (Most I read about have many stairs to the beach.) Since the beach hotels are also equally close to the town center, having quick beach access would be nice. However, for a town location, the Solimar is a terrific value.…
