Kilmorna Manor is a unique, one of a kind home, that was designed and built by an eccentric Irishman in 1978, who decided that he wanted to have the best of both worlds: his deep love of the Lowveld Bush coupled with the gracious lifestyle of an English country squire. The result is one of the most unique homes to be found in Mpumalanga. A Tudor mansion of magnificent proportions set on a 208-hectare, malaria-free, nature reserve high up against the escarpment of Schoemanskloof. Kilmorna Manor Guesthouse and Private Nature Reserve occupies 208 hectares in the Schoemanskloof, a deep valley through which the Crocodile River flows down the escarpment from its source on the Highveld plateau to the sub-tropical Lowveld. Schoemanskloof is thus in a transition zone, with elements of both the Highveld and the Lowveld, and this has resulted in a rich diversity of plants, birds, invertebrates and other life forms. On the steeper slopes above and around the manor - at an elevation between 1300 and 1500 meters - the habitat is evergreen Afromontane Forest. Annual rainfall is between 1000 and 1250 mm per year and mist is a regular feature, sometimes lingering for days. This mist provides essential moisture for the escarpment forests that are sometimes referred to as 'mist-belt' or 'cloud' forests. Kilmorna Manor is a never to be forgotten experience. Surrounded by unspoiled bush, Kilmorna Manor is home to a wide variety of plant life from ancient gnarled trees to endangered cycads as well as fields of magnificent indigenous wild flowers. Sightings of soaring crowned eagles to darting brown hooded kingfishers abound. Take a gentle stroll through the grasslands, or for the more adventurous, a walk up mountain paths for the most spectacular view of the Schoemanskloof Valley. And for those who just want to relax - enjoy a sundowner on the deck of the rim flow pool and watch the zebra and waterbuck graze a few meters away. Kilmorna Manor has six gracious en-suite bedrooms, each leading out onto the lush sub-tropical garden, which is home to a wide variety of bird life, including the elusive Narina Trogon. Knysna and purple crested turacos grace the gardens as well as sunbirds that can be seen darting through the trees and aloes which line the stream flowing through the garden. Kilmorna Manor is well situated for day expeditions in and around Mpumalanga including Kaapsehoop, Dullstroom and The Kruger National Park.
Had one of the best stay overs ever at Kilmorna Manor just before Christmas. From the trip up the mountain, the welcoming, the accommodation, the meals, the gardens and THE VIEW, everything was exceptional. More than worth spending an extra day on your way to Kruger or Mozambique or even a weekend,

Kilmorna Manor guest house was a truly delightful experience. The owners, were incredibly welcoming and hospitable, making sure that our stay was as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The guest house itself was beautifully decorated, full of pictures, books, other treasures and stories, plus all the amenities you would need. What really stood out was the delicious food - we were treated to some truly mouth-watering meals during our stay. Overall, I would highly recommend Kilmorna Manor to anyone looking for a lovely, relaxing getaway in a beautiful setting. And a special shout-out to the owners for their warm hospitality and fantastic cuisine.

Kilmorna Manor is a unique and wonderful getaway. The house is exquisitely decorated and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Beyond the gardens is a large plot of the natural bush and grasslands which is perfect for hikes. The hosts are very considerate and attentive. The food we had during our stay was excellent. The swimming pool has stunning views of the surrounding vistas.

We were looking for a place to celebrate our anniversary. Browsing through Kilmorna’s website intrigued me. The rooms are colourful, bold, well-equipped and unique. I loved the setting as we had spent many lovely week-ends in Scheomanskloof, and Kilmorna Manor is almost on top of the mountain. We arrived and drank in the splendour of the manor, going from room to room each with tasteful furnishings and decor. The Manor is a Library in itself, something to read no matter your choice. Laura-ann and Philip were warm, welcoming and generous, giving us free rein of their wonderful estate. The unique dinner menu gave us another reason to stay at Kilmorna. All our meals were different but delicious. The signs on the road up the mountain remind you that “it will be worth it”. Indeed it is and we will be back at Kilmorna Manor DV. …

Kilmorna Manor - run by Philip and Laura-ann Orvis - was an amazing experience! It totally surpassed our wildest expectations. Their hospitality - the very unique setting in the mountains - the individuality of the rooms - excellent facilities - wonderful menu and service as well as their personal attention to the finest detail were truly appreciated. The very unique pool with its vistas, the forest walk, the tranquility of the garden - all in all just an amazing experience. The library and the art collection - as well as all the different artefact collections - so overwhelming - wish we booked a longer stay!

We had two wonderful, peaceful nights at this magical Manor. Laura-Ann & Phillip were the most gracious hosts and made our stay a memorable experience. The lovely trail steeped in nature, the hilltop pool with the magnificent view and the exceptional food were an absolute treat. We look forward to going back.

How does one capture the essence of Kilmorna Manor? Undisturbed relaxation, discreet elegance and warm hospitality? Cuisine that rivals the best restaurants in Paris? Cool waters in pool with a view? Irish Tudor in an African setting? To Laura-Ann and Philip, we say ' Thank you!' You have created a magical place with its impressive library that sits aloft the vast baronial hall, its bedrooms with four poster beds and fairy tale fireplaces, its rambling gardens and, last but not least, its zebras and antelope which we encountered on our walks around the nature reserve. Thank you, again. You, our hosts, made my husband's birthday a truly memorable occasion.

Dear Jill. We are speechless as a result of your incredibly gracious review. We are also humbled and thank you for taking the time out to write about your experience. Unfortunately the rot has now set in what with Philip speaking with an appalling French accent and demanding to be called Phileep!!

This place is a dream. Up the difficult dirt road, where one wonders how they built this place and what are the logistics of the entire operation, on the hill in the middle of the bush is an Irish Manor from a fairy tale. It's a Five Star place, with well equipped rooms, amazing surroundings with a dream pool, first rate food and impeccable service. The owner/chef is a former 747 captain. Say no more.

My theory is that you can always tell how good the stay is going to be with what the host puts in the jars in your room .ie the quality of biscuits, sweets, biltong etc Laura- Ann and Philip have done an exceptional job with the beautiful Manor House as everything is of exceptional quality . The immaculately manicured gardens are a delight to walk in . The highlight for us was the rim flow pool with incredible views . Philip a retired 747 pilot claims to be a reluctant chef - but let me tell you that his food is both exquisite and delicious. Laura pays attention to detail and cares for your every need ! Making it a truly memorable and enjoyable stay . Well done guys - a true 5 star experience
