Detailed Reviews
Our booking co-incided with a really wet day on the trail and we were pleased to arrive. At the time it was the only accomdation in the area. There were some worries about the state of the hotel as seen from earier photos. However what a surprise. We got a great room (No4) big and bright with lots of space to dry out hiking stuff. We got a great welcome. The food comes from a simple menu but is home cooked and great portions.
Due to the weather nd the comfort of the room we stayed over and we split the next section of the walk. Free of charge the owner drove us to the start and we walked back to the hotel. The following morning he took us back to the mid point and we set off for Sanquhar. Great service all round. Breakfast was massive and on the second day we had to ask for less!!!!!
Anyone doing the SU way should stay here as its great value for money. Its excellent value when you consider where it is, what he charges and the welcome given to filthy hikers

I greeted by Sam , and made to feel very welcome. The ensuite room was spacious , clean and had a pleasant view from the window. There was a limited menu for the evening meal but it was good quality and value. The Breakfast was of similar calibre and kept me walking for many hours after leaving St Johns Town

I stayed for 2 nights when working in the area. The staff were fantastic and Sam is such a helpful easy-going host. He made sure I was catered for and met whatever my requests for meal times, food etc. The rooms were a little dated and need a bit of TLC, but they were clean and comfortable enough and for the price, you can't complain. Sam is pretty laid back, so they'll be updated, all in good time... The surrounding area is beautiful; very unpopulated and superb forests & lochs with plenty of wildlife & walking opportunities.

We only dined - alfresco. Whilst hotel looking a bit run down, it had a very pleasant garden to the side, which was set back off the road and catches the late afternoon/evening sunshine. Good car parking, again off the road. Two had burger with cheese and bacon, one had cajun chicken burger (all 3 with skinny chips) and one had steak pie (with fat chips)....all delicious 😋. Cajun chicken could have got away with being a bit spicer, but that's just personal choice. Dessert: one had cheesecake - delicious; one had apple crumble - was ok, but not great. Ice cream was delicious. Staff efficient enough and service quick. Would definitely recommend and would definitely be back.

Had a meal with friends and had a drink outside in the garden area whilst waiting for our meal. Great menu and always good portion sizes. Ambiance lovely and great service as always. Bar busy. This is a lovely hotel with history and lovely views whilst seated outside.

Stayed in this hotel a few months back and was shocked by the complete lack of competance from management and staff. The hotel itself is in a beautiful location and reception and general decor were all very nice. Our breakfast was adequate and dinner was edible (though had a far nicer meal in the pub over the road).
Now to the real stuff. We had no shower in the room, and the bath had no hot water. We spoke to management about this and were given no assurances whatsoever that we would ever get hot water. In fact, the manager and his staff were all very rude when we made our complaint and didn't seem to care at all. We entered the bar downstairs one evening and it was like walking into the wild west! Drunken yobs had completely taken over and the owner seemed to be encouraging the behaviour. Not what we were expecting from the website!
Me and my partner had decided not to leave a review about the hotel, given that it's only recently been taken over, but the positive review below prompted me to change my mind. I feel people need to know what the hotel is like if you're not part of a wedding reception/function.

We decided to celebrate our last night together for 5 weeks and dropped in here. We were greeted by a warm welcome in a very quiet pub. In peak season perhaps I should have known then? We ordered drinks and we shown through to a restaurant where only two other tables were in use.
We ordered and waited 40 minutes for the starter to arrive. The main was slow too but it didn’t matter so much as the starters were filling and tasty. Though the bread had been micro waived into a red hot state and the butter next to it was therefore a liquid.
I ordered the 10oz Gammon with 2 eggs and chips and a side order of an extra egg and mushrooms and onion rings. My Gammon arrived with only one egg and no side order. I was advised that the side order was on its way but a short while later was bluntly advised that “ The kitchen had forgot it”!
I asked why I only had one egg and was advised that there were two Gammon meals on the menu and I had ordered the wrong one. The waiter kept repeating we had ordered the wrong gammon but would not bring the menu. After some pressure from us he did bring the menu and though he still protested that there we two gammon meals he was unable to find the other one on the menu. He had lied to us to try and make it my fault.
I gave the waiter the food and asked him to bring the chef so we could sort the matter.
Someone older arrived who did not introduce himself (chef, owner, manager?) and simply said he had credited my starter and my main meal and I would not be paying for them. He said the waiter had rung through a gammon from the lunchtime menu and then left.
This was not either of the options I had in mind. I would have been happy with a smaller gammon (which was 8oz) and one egg at the correct price or them starting again and cooking what I had ordered. This option left me without FOOD!
This was very awkward for other two as I in fact never got a main meal that night. A special evening and treat was totally ruined and my partner didn’t enjoy her meal due to the atmosphere.
As we settled the bill we found another error on the drinks bill and left.
Do not eat here it was the worst handling of a problem I have experienced in some 50 years of eating out. I was left without food and no offer of a solution was offered.

Response from Willmatt321, Owner at OYO Lochinvar Hotel
Responded 20 Aug 2014
Thanks for your comments and we are sorry that the meal, starters excepted, you had with us did not go according to plan, we acknowledge that unfortunately the wrong Gammon meal (8oz instead of 10oz) was served to the table. At no stage, however, were you being charged for the 10oz meal - the waiter processed the wrong order through the till and this was then prepared by the kitchen and served. (I have made an adjustment to the till food menu, so hopefully this will not happen again). We had hoped that the problem had been sorted out at the time, no charge being made for your starter, main and drink (I assume this is your reference to incorrect billing for drinks) and our apologies for the inconvenience caused. We still do not understand why you refused to eat the 8oz meal or accept the offer of waiting whilst we prepared a fresh 10oz meal. On the subject of waiting we have to disagree with your account of the slow service, although we were serving tables in both the restaurant and bar, our epos records show that the duration of your meal, from ordering to payment, was 1hour and 5mins, waiting 40 minutes for the starter and then the main meal being slow to arrive would not have left much time for eating! A 2 course meal in a little over an hour seems to be a reasonable amount of time. We do try our best to resolve any customer grievances at the time, but it appears that on this occasion that was not possible.

!!!! New owners from March 2011- Ignore all reviews before this !!!!!
My friend and I stayed here for 2 nights as another friend was getting married in the area. If we had any other choice we would have stayed elsewhere but everywhere close by was booked up. Before booking this hotel my friend and I looked at the website and decided that it seemed very nice and was worth the price of £42.50 per person per night.
However, on arriving at the hotel the first thing that we noticed on entering the room was that there was no shower. We asked straight away to move but were told that there were no more rooms available even though we knew that there were people arriving the next day for the wedding. As it was 10:15pm there was not much we could do (we did phone around the area to see if there were any rooms available but there was not).
We decided to go down to the bar to have a drink after out long journey- on the website there is a private hotel bar but this was not open so we went into the public bar.
The next morning we again spoke to the hotel owner as we were not pleased with the condition of the room once we could see it in the daylight. We pointed out areas that were below par, for example peeling wall paper in the bathroom and cobwebs on the ceiling (see pictures). His answer was that we would not get anywhere else better. He did knock some money off the price which took it down to 32.50 pppn. We still did not think that this was good enough. His response was "this is what we are". He was not very helpful at all and didn't seem to realise that his standards were low. When we mentioned about the website showing different images to the ones we say he just said that he didn't think the website was very good.
Believe me that if we were not in the area for a wedding we would not have stayed one night, let alone two.
The town itself is lovely and this hotel is in a prime location and could be a luxury hotel with a bit of work.
