We had an amazing time at the Orange Creek Inn. You will find few more beautiful places anywhere. We had the beach to ourselves most of the time we were there—and it is an amazing beach for swimming, watching nature, boating, and more. The rooms are nice and clean. The rooms have a stove, dishes, and all needed to make some simple meals. There is a nice store at the hotel that is well stocked, including many Bahamian specialties. The service is extremely friendly. There is a laundry as well. There are some good restaurants a short drive away, too. If you want a quite, remote getaway spot, this one is lovely!

We stayed at Orange Creek Inn for nine nights. Pros – nice, helpful and responsive owners and staff, onsite grocery store and laundromat, very clean, AC worked well, hot shower, great value. Cons – Wifi ranged from good to non-existent and varied day by day, TV only had one channel, kitchenette is very small and we only used it to make grilled cheese sandwiches and reheat leftovers, no microwave. We would stay at Orange Creek again if we were staying in the north.

I took a five-day trip to Cat Island, it was absolutely beautiful. Staying at Orange Creek Inn felt like visiting family in the best way. It is the perfect place to unplug and enjoy nature. The Cleares were so friendly and inviting. Most definitely a place to revisit. I had an amazing time.

If your idea of a trip to the Bahamas is nightclubs, gambling, jetskiing, being served drinks on the beach, etc... don't even consider Orange Creek Inn.
However, if touring a remote island by bike, using your own snorkling gear, preparing your own meals, spending multiple days on a beach without ever seeing another person, and treating the locals (and being treated in return) as equals sounds like your kind of vacation,... then Orange Creek Inn and the north end of Cat Island is the place for you.
Extremely clean room; wonderfully friendly people; postcard beach and water. *The* place for do-it-yourselfers / backpackers / hostel travellers. We loved our week there.

I just returned from a weeks stay at Orange Creek Inn with my wife and 16 year old granddaughter. The inn certainly met my expectations for the price. (It very likely might have been the cheapest place to stay on the entire island). And we were the only ones staying there at the time. Very clean and fresh sheets every day. The Cleares were very nice people. I liked having the grocery store right there. And being able to cook our own breakfast every morning, instead of having to go out right away. The beaches were gorgeous with never a soul on any of them besides us. I especially liked the one across Orange Creek that you could wade across and then it streched for probably 4 miles of beautiful firm white sand. (It was my granddaughter's running beach) Big Al who works at the grocery store in the morning had a car for rent- $70 a day- so we had to take him up on that for a few days because everything is so spread out along the length of the island (45 miles). And there is o public transportation like small van type buses to haul the local people around (which I am used to on most Carribean islands & expected to find here as well), because there are only about 1500 people left on the island and I don't think a bus service could pay for itself. It seems a good share of the youth leaves for jobs up in the City. The only ATM and bank on the island is down at Noyles, (about 25 miles down the coast from Orange Creek). There's a great beach on yhe windward side (which I spotted on the plane ride between New Bight and Aurthur Town) that I just had to get to somehow and we eventually did find a road across to it just south of Noyles by a delightful little lunch place called Mark's by a little cove there. The road was barely driveable- (we didn't get stuck till near the end) the beach was miles long with never a soul on it of course, with the wild Atlantic in front of you. So different from the other side and no sandflies at sunset like there are all up & down the leeward side. And yes they are quite annoying for a couple hours every day (also in the morning). The main road runs all the way down the leeward side and is mostly in real good shape except in stretches where Hurricane Irene washed it out a couple years ago. After we let the car go, the evening meal got to be a bit of a problem because the nearest places (Shannas Cove, Periwinkle, & Da Smoke Pot) were all miles away. Periwinkle is walkable for a younger man, but I would say the other two are not. And of course you have to let them know you're coming at least a half day in advance and what you like to eat so it can be purchased or taken out of the freezer ( which is a quite common courtesy to be followed on most of the islands that I'm used to down the Carribean). But the problem certainly wasn't serious because after the first few days we had plenty of local friends who were always offering to take us here or there for favors or a little gas money or whatever. My favorite joint on the North end was definately Da Smoke Pot. Renee & Julien. Good drinks, good food, usually a little Rake & Scrape session with the boys after supper, a lot of laughter an joke telling comaraderie, and often some tourists from various parts of the world to talk with as well. If you go there, please say Hi to Julien from me (Tom from Minnesota). We had plkanned to stay 10 days there, but after about the fifth day I could detect the ladies getting a little anxious fpr some shopping and more amusements and maybe a bit bored with the sameness of it all. So I went to the airport at Aurthur Town & changed the tickets out without hassle ($20 each) and we spent the last 3 days in Nassau, which made the girls very happy. My wife isn't much of a drinker so the evening's partying doesn't give her the kick that it does me. I have traveled extensively throughout the Carribean & all of the mainland of Central America for about a month every winter for probably 25 years, mostly solo, with beaches, friendly bars, and solo discovery adventures being my priorities. This was my first time in the Bahamas, I liked Cat Island a lot better than Nassau, and if I go there again I believe I would stay at Orange Creek Inn. We all enjoyed it for sure, but me the most. It was a good place for a guy like me, but I believe most especially for a young couple who just want to spend a lot of time alone on the beach together. I hope someone finds this descriptive and helpful.

I am always dubious when takin' trips to places I hadn't been to before, however, The Orange Creek Inn was great! We had a dbl room with a kitchenette. Very clean and spacious with lots of towels, soap and shampoo! The food store below the rooms didn't have everything but there was more than enough to get by on. Mrs. Cleare is a very nice lady who really cares about her guests. The TV is supplied by a dish.
Therefore just ONE channel. And that's whatever the main TV is tuned to! The weather was fabulous! There is a lovely secluded powdery white sand beach north of the hotel a few miles. The food at the SEA SPRAY HOTEL was great! Also, at DA SMOKING POT! Which is in ARTHURS TOWN.
Very reasonably priced. Also in ARTHURS TOWN on the roadside we had the tastiest scorched conch we had ever eaten! Two ladies come out around 5:30pm and prepare it. Just opposite the HARD ROCK RESTAURANT. The 3 days on Cat Island was very relaxing and laid back.

Recently, a friend and I spent a fun and interesting week at the Orange Creek Inn on Cat Island.
Cat Island is definitely not for certain types of tourist. It is as if one went to the Bahamas twenty five years ago.
First, though, I want to tell anyone reading this that Orange Creek Inn is probably the best deal on the island. The Inn is a two story building with about 16 inexpensive rooms, eight facing the creek and eight facing the rising sun. It is best to be facing the creek. During the day it shimmers as it transposes itself from meandering water washing over small sand deposits, to deep and rushing at high tide.
The rooms are clean, bright, airy and large. A small kitchen area with cook top, sink and utensils, combines with a small in room refrigerator, to make a great place to make breakfast, lunch or dinner. Although we did not cook "gourmet" we did have breakfast in the room, made lunches and had a fabulous "Boston" dinner one night of hot dogs on grilled rolls, baked beans, pickles and chips. One can save money by making breakfast and lunch.
The Inn contains one of the better grocery stores on the island. Pretty much whatever you need is there, even some things you don't need.
Margaret Claire is the owner and operator of the Inn with help from her pleasant and helpful daughter Cherie, and under the watchful eye of husband Allen. I would say that Margaret is the mayor of North Cat Island if there was one. Cherie will pick you up at the Arthur's Town airport and deliver you to the Inn. Bicycles and kayaks are available, as are rental cars. We did use a car to make the length of the island drive one day down to Hawk's Nest and once to drive to the east side. Remember to wave and/or "beep" to cars and pedestrians.
There is in essence one road on the island that runs north to south along the coast on the west, or lee, side of the island. The lee side is very shallow, and has the various turquoise shades that most see in the Bahamian waters. This side has most of the beaches.
Once can get to the east side but the roads there are pretty rough. Once there it is much wilder than the lee side since the Atlantic comes all the way from Africa to get there.
The beach, snorkeling and swimming are the major activities. If you are looking for night life, you probably would not want to come to Cat. There are a number of "restaurants" that are not restaurants in the general sense. No standard menu, and notice to the restaurant that you are coming ( and what you would like for entrée) is required
We stopped in to Kizzey's (run by Kizzey, her mother and Andrew (Tall Boy) for a drink. Asked for a menu but were told that there is no menu. It was Valentine's Day so we decided to eat dinner at Kizzey's. She prepared the menu and served shrimp, grouper or beef for the evening.
We had driven our bikes to dinner, but when we left to bike back to Orange Creek Inn the darkness was encompassing. There were periodically placed street lights, but it was till very dark.
Because there is almost no ambient light on the island, the darkness is great and the heavens are a vast ocean of stars. Very nice.
The weather was cool for Cat island, but for escapees from New England it was fine. When sunny, it can get very intense midday. Remember to apply your lotion.
Other places to go for a drink or dinner (but no menus) are Periwinkles run by Yvonne; the coast cocktail bar run by Etta (Grammy); Da Smoke Pot, run by Julian and Rene where, after a nice dinner of Caribbean lobster tail we engaged in an impromptu session of "rake and scrape" the Bahamian style of music that incorporates a handsaw, drum and squeeze box. Julian encourages participation.
The landscape of the island is unique in that there are very well kept homes and buildings sitting adjacent to derelict and abandoned buildings. Some of these buildings are said to be old slave quarters, but there are many buildings seemingly stopped in the middle of construction.
If one checks real estate listings on the island it is difficult to equate the prices with the large number of empty lots and abandoned buildings.
There is a high end resort called Shanna's Cove just north of Orange Creek Inn that is very nice and has a restaurant with a menu. however, one still has to call ahead to let them know you are coming.
Finally, the beach at Bennet's Cove is great.

Sherrie was a wonderful host. We had a room facing the beach rose to that experience every morning. Sherrie gave us plenty of options for places to eat, purchase items and for tours for the island. She even arrange our car rental.
Cars are not necessary for your stay but needed if you want to tour the whole island, there is options for bikes to move around. Airport pick-up and drop off is also complimentary done by Sherrie the owner of Orange Creek Inn. We rented a car for 2 days, used it to travel to Shana's for my birthday dinner and the next day to see the whole island.
Dinner at Shauna was exquisite and the island tour was awesome. We ate at Yardies for Jamaican food and for conch salad.
The Heritage was an uplifiting and spiritual experience on the southern part of the island.
The beaches across from the Inn is untouched white sand clear blue water where you see sting rays, fishes starfishes etc. Great for kayaking too which we did.
We had a chance to mix with the locals on the island, the people are very friendly, mannerly and very helpful.
I stayed 5 days in Cat Island and it is unforgettable..
Will definitely return again.

I first time I stayed at Orange Creek Inn was over a decade ago. At that time, there were no resorts on that end of Cat Island. My impressions then were that the rooms were clean, spacious, comfortable and had fabulous views of the blue green waters of the creek which is just across the street from the Inn.
Recently, I returned to Cat Island, this time with a party of 8! We initially booked our stay at some other lodging because we could not get in touch with anyone at OCI. We tried through Booking.com as well as TripAdvisor with no luck until about week before we were to depart. Finally we got in touch with OCI and luckily they had availability. We booked 3 rooms.
Upon arrival to Cat Island, we called the Inn and they sent someone to pick us up from Arthur’s Town Airport. The Inn is as neat and clean as I remembered it. The front lawn has been expanded, the trees and bushes now more lush and mature, with benches and umbrellas set out for guests. Entering our room, which faced the creek, I was once again struck by the gorgeous view from the windows.
The Inn offers basic amenities. It's strengths are that it is well maintained, very clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. The rooms are spacious with 2 full sized beds, but the bathroom is pretty small with a only a shower stall and no tub. They provide soap, but no hair dryer nor shampoo and conditioner. There is a dresser/vanity and an open closet. There is free wifi and a television, but there is no telephone. The rooms also have a thru wall air conditioner as well as a ceiling fan. The air conditioner was pretty noisy, but it did keep the place cool. For those who prefer to have the windows open, the screens look to be well maintained.
The rooms also have a fully equipped tiny kitchenette (2 burner stove, mini fridge, pots/pans, dishes, utensils, cutting board, sink) and a little seating area with 2 chairs and a table. There is a general store on the ground floor which, while not carrying a large selection of food stuffs, did have all we needed to cook our meals. A Tip: we bought some groceries in Nassau and carried it with us to Cat Island. Beware that if you are flying, all frozen goods must be in a hard cooler case, not a styrofoam cooler. There is not much of a restaurant scene on Cat Island. I recommend planning to cook your meals.
There is an ice machine in the back of the Inn. You may wish to bridge a flashlight and insect repellant with you if you need to go out there at night. Also back there is also a token operated laundromat. You can buy tokens from the store and it is $2 to wash and $2 to dry, however there are lines out back for hang drying.
As far as activities go, the Inn has a few bikes to rent. I forget the price, but I think it was $5 or 10 a day. We rented 4 since they did not have enough available for our entire party. The bikes were not in the best condition but serviceable. We were told the Inn can also arrange excursions with Cat Island locals however we did not have a need for that.
The staff was friendly and accommodating. Darren, the owner's son, was actively looking for feedback on how he can improve his guests' stay.
Darren, here's your list:
- improve the room booking process
- have a portfolio of activities for your guests to choose from (list who to make arrangements with, time of availability, cost, etc.)
- have a guest info pamphlet in each room (with wifi info, activities, local restaurants, emergency contacts, etc.)
- carry more local merchandise in the store (seasonal fruits, local produce, local crafts, etc.)

I am almost positive they will do this as I heard Margret saying so on the phone while we were shopping ...call them to confirm. There are Taxis also.
Hello Kristin. When you want to reach to the beautiful Island of Cat Island, you'll book a flight with the airline company in Nassau Bahamas, called SkyBahamas. Your able to look them up online and see there prices, to and from Cat Island.
However, I do know that there are two flights per day, one in the morning that arrives to Cat Island by 9:30am, and returns to Nassau there after, and theres an evening flight out of Nassau shortly after 4pm. The flights approximately 35 minutes.
Thank you
Darren
