We are a very active couple (age mid-50s).This was our first visit to St John and we did not know where to rent and we got so lucky that Gecko house was available for our dates. Everything was good about it. The owner thought about every detail to make our stay comfortable. We were very touched to find a bottle of wine , cheese and crackers in the house. There were beach chairs, beach mats even a beach bag (I forgot mine and was very happy to find one there). The room was not large but cozy. The screened porch and the view from it are winners. We cooked most of our meals and kitchen had everything that may be needed. There were papaya trees in the garden and house caretaker gave us one and it was delecious. Doug , the house cartaker, did everything he could to make our stay pleasurable. There are potted fresh herbs by the door for us to use in cooking. We were told that some houses on St John had very steep driveways and are very challenging to drive in and out. The road to Gecko house and driveway was OK - we had no trouble getting in and out. I think the location is superb. It is pretty close to town and to grocery shopping. To get to est end beaches we drove - but with views like that - who cares? We will definetely go back to Gecko house for our next trip to St.John

This place is amazing and really one of the best values on the entire island. I would not stay anywhere else. For me and my wife there is a delicate balance that you want to find for a vacation rental. We want a place that is comfortable enough that you enjoy staying there, but not too expensive that you feel that you cannot leave because you are wasting your money. Gecko House hit that balance perfectly. It is a fine and clean accommodation with a great view. It is not stuffy or pretentious. It is a well situated bungalow on a gem of an island.
The owner is there - helpful, but never intrusive. The kitchen allows for cooking and the deck allows for enjoying the sites and sounds of beautiful Fish Bay. The hot tube is clean and is a perfect way to end a nice long day of touring the island. Yes, you do need a car to get around the island if you stay here, but a 4x4 is not required contrary to other posts.

What else can I say other than if you are going to St. John you would be foolish to not see if this place is available!

This was an amazing trip for my wife and I. We came here to celebrate our 10 year anniversary and had a completely amazing time. Make sure you connect with The Whistler if you want someone local who can show you all the best food and snorkeling spots; also, if you like good music, then you will love his folksy blues and country rock. Every day and night was really like a dream for us, and when we came back here to Philly...well, we are still dealing with sadness over having to leave. If you can, stay for more than a week. We only had a week to spare but would have happily stayed for another two if we could have. The cabin is clean, comfortable, and has faster Internet than my crappy Comcast set up at home! I expected to have to deal with bugs and maybe it was the weather, but I left without a single mosquito bite. Now, sand fleas on the other hand...they got me at the beach but that is to be expected. Andrea has a great little fantasy spot here, and I can't help but feel all choked up when I remember the beautiful, peaceful view from the balcony - moonlight on the water, the sound of waves, and the complete absence of all the noise here in the city. It did wonders for our marriage and we played together like children. Do it. That's all I have to say. Oh, and give Doug (The Whistler) and Lacey a hug and kiss from The Martin's!

Gecko House is a small apartment attached to a house in the hills of Fish Bay. Although Fish Bay is not a swimming/snorkel spot the view from the screened porch of the Gecko House rental is calm, quiet and beautiful, often with sailboats moored in the bay.

The apartment has everything a couple needs for a get-away; full kitchen on entry, small eating area and bedroom in one large room with an enclosed bathroom with big shower. The screened porch with table & chairs and comfy furniture is the length of the unit; we had meals there and hung out there most of the time. The clothes line is handy; we washed our swimming stuff and hung it out there along with occasional laundry; no washer and dryer are available.
The apartment has complete visual privacy, which we loved. Note that the main house is connected to the apartment by a small patio with lattice screening so we occasionally heard people but it didn't bother us.

Four wheel drive is a must.

My husband and I just took our honeymoon on St. John. Neither of us had been before, and we had a wonderful experience at Gecko House on our first trip. The villa is nestled up on the mountain with a beautiful view of Fish Bay from the screened in porch, where we drank our coffee every morning. The area around the deck below (with the hot tub) hosts a variety of beautiful native trees and plants that attracted many birds, including Bananaquits, Pearly Eyed Thrashers, and Antillean Crested Hummingbirds. The hot tub itself was great-- my husband doesn't care for them, but I was in it every day.

The villa itself had everything we needed for cooking and day tripping and was quite comfortable. It also got a wonderful cross breeze-- even in August, we never had to turn on the air conditioning; the overhead fan was fine. It was really wonderful to have the privacy of "our own" villa without sacrificing convenient proximity to gas, grocery shopping, etc.

Although Andrea was off island for our trip, we had Doug staying next door to welcome us and provide helpful information and ideas for the duration of our stay. He even brought us a bottle of wine the evening we arrived, and made us lasagna one night! His advice as far as which beaches we should try and where to find good shopping for local artisan work etc. was invaluable, and he was simply a gem in every way. We also adored Lacie, the canine Gecko House "mascot" who lives on grounds. She was incredibly sweet and gentle, as well as cute as a button!

All in all, we had a very nice stay, and were far, far happier at Gecko House than we ever could have been at a hotel. If you enjoy privacy without actually having to be completely removed from everyone, Gecko House is a destination that you will truly enjoy.

We had a wonderful time. Everything about the Gecko House was perfect. It was quiet and peaceful. You can watch the sun rise from your bed each morning. We loved the jacuzzi, a perfect end to a hard day of snorkeling. Andrea was very kind. She gave us lots of good advice on places to visit and dine. Many thanks.
We will be back!

Just returned from a stay at the Gecko House on St John. Charming cottage overlooking fish bay. Sunrise on patio deck every morning. Nice bathroom, kitchen and washing machine. There are only 2-3 resort hotels on the island and tend to be pricey. As the island is not very large we opted to stay private rental, stay longer and explore the island ourselves. Andrea and Joel were great hosts. Andrea also provided plenty of towels and beach chairs. If you’re looking for an island experience in a peaceful setting, you can’t go wrong with the Gecko House. Andrea recommended renting a Jeep. At first I thought that it might be overkill but it was definitely the right choice- roads on St John are narrow with steep inclines and switchbacks. Driving is on the left. Just a few minutes to Cruz bay and about 20 minutes to the north end beaches. All beaches are free except Trunk Bay which costs $5 per person per day. Photo of sunrise from Gecko House balcony.

We just returned from our trip to St John and the whole trip was made that much more fabulous by our stay rather Gecko House. The house was beautiful and decorated with unique island decor. It definitely felt like our home away from home (except that our actual home doesn't have a marvelous hot tub or beautiful views of the mountains and the Caribbean!). It made for a perfect honeymoon! Unfortunately the owners were not there during our stay, they seem great and it would have been nice to meet them; but they did have someone available for us to contact if necessary. Overall we couldn't have been more pleased and hope to return again (and would, without question, stay at the Gecko House again). Thank you so much for sharing your piece of paradise with us!

Our stay at Gecko House was based on trip advisor reviews. I liked the personal touches mentioned in each of those. Gecko House lived up to our expectations.

This is a sweet and very small house. A single room with a bath in a studio setup that works very well. The view is breathtaking -- over Fish Bay -- and the sunsets each day are just gorgeous.

The furnishings are modern and the house is neat and clean. Gecko House is totally functional and Andrea makes sure that everything is kept current and working. She is also an excellent St John guide who truly cares about her beautiful island and cares about the welfare and comfort of her guests.

There are lots of steps to and from Gecko House, so this should be taken into consideration. Even getting to the hot tub is three sets of stairs up and down. And the driveway up to the house from the road is like the rest of the roads on St John -- interesting. We rented a Jeep Wrangler and we are glad we did.

The key question: Would we go back? Absolutely! We made some new friends there and we felt at home. Thank you Andrea, Ann, Jim and Doug.

My wife and I spent two weeks on St. John, with a week in Coral Bay and a week at Gecko House. As small as the island is, we had totally different experiences and both were totally enjoyable. Gecko House was a perfectly comfortable home and Andrea and Joel were wonderful hosts. We especially appreciated the close easy access to Cruz Bay which allowed us to sample the night-life, yet have an easy drive back home after dark. The cottage itself had all the amenities we needed and then a little more. We were surprised how much we enjoyed the hot tub in the tropical climate, providing a perfect place for star-gazing, enjoying the garden, and relaxing weary muscles after a challenging St. John hike. Before arriving we questioned whether we would like having a screened porch rather than a deck but it was great - very private and you still felt like you were outside with a great view of Fish Bay. Although the cottage is close to the main house, they are situated in such a way that it is still very private. Andrea and Joel always respected our privacy but were handy if we needed some equipment, directions or recommendations. Andrea even arranged a sailing trip with friend Ken and they joined us for a fun day of sailing and snorkeling. We plan to return in the future, hopefully for a longer stay.
