"Treetops" is a 3-guest room bungalow nestled amid the wooded hilltop abutting the National Park in Fish Bay - the south side of the island. We are only two and a half miles from the ferry dock in Cruz Bay, located in a quiet residential neighborhood. Renting a vehicle (most people rent jeeps) is a necessity. We are the "affordable and adorable" alternative to pricey villas and large resorts. And best of all - we had no hurricane damage so we are up and running and accepting reservations through mid-June in each of our three rooms. "The Captain's Quarters" is an air-conditioned 2-room suite with queen size bed and a single day bed, kitchenette, lavatory, and private outside shower. "The First Mate's Headquarters" has a queen size bed, fridge and microwave, full en suite bath and private deck. "The Bunkhouse" is also air-conditioned, has a queen-size bed, fridge, and lavatory and shower. There is a gas grill available for guests' use. Coffee and muffins are available in the morning.

Detailed Reviews
We had an amazing trip in St. John and loved our stay at Treetops. It is a fantastic location in Fish Bay - close to some of the more remote beaches the south side of the island as well as an easy drive into Cruz Bay and the north shore. We stayed in the Captain's Quarters, which was clean, well maintained, had AC, a small kitchenette area and outdoor shower. Hank & Karen were amazing hosts beginning with excellent communication and directions prior to our arrival. Karen made an amazing breakfast for us each morning, and we really enjoyed our conversations with them. They are true experts on the island, with lots of great recommendations. Another perk, they provide guests with clean beach towels, beach chairs and coolers - everything you could need! I highly recommend Treetops for a stay in St. John and absolutely will be making a trip back ourselves soon!

+1
Close to town, tucked away in the hills, a delightful change from 7 years along the Audubon property in Cruz Bay. Homemade warm pastries every morning with fresh Caribbean fruits and more to start the day. Conversations and laughter with Karen and Hank who know this island better than the back of their hands. We did the most new exploring with their recommendations and every suggestion was spot ON! So many highlights this year, and our final day was spent on Pot Luck, Capt Hank and Karen's boat, for a day of touring, snorkeling, swimming, lunching from the Pizza Boat on Christmas Cove. What a ride! Our room, Captain's Quarters was perfect with AC and window views. There are plenty of spots to read, relax (especially the hammock), take in the views and gardens. Loved the outdoor shower in the rain with a frog joining in ~ ah, the great outdoors. Looking forward to a longer stay next time.

If you’re looking for an extravagant and expensive place to stay on St. John, along with a flashy lobby, dozens or hundreds of guests, fancy pool, valet parking, heart-attack style breakfasts, sterile hotel furnishings, noise and bustle, then Treetops is NOT the place for you. However, if you’re looking for a quiet location where you can feel completely relaxed to unwind from the day’s (or life’s) activities and distractions, this is the place for you. Although it’s only a short drive to town, you’ll feel like you’re in your own private and secluded residence. The accommodations are casual and comfortable; more like being at home instead of an impersonal hotel-like setting. Breakfasts were a healthy mix of fresh fruit, juice, hot coffee, warm-out-of-the-oven muffins and other goodies. It was just the right balance to prepare you for a day of relaxation or adventure or a little of each.
Capt. Hank was our host during our stay as Karen was traveling. We stayed in the Captain’s Quarters, pictures of which you can see on the Treetops website. The pictures can’t capture the true character and tranquility of this Bed & Breakfast. Capt. Hank has put together an impressive setting including walls and walkways artistically embedded with shells, colorful fragments and other interesting items. Don't be surprised if you see a few curious but shy geckos scurrying about.
One of the highlights of the Captain’s Quarters is the outdoor shower! While private from the view of your hosts or the other guests, one side is open to a dense tropical hillside view. Outstanding! If you’re shy about the birds seeing you, you can always use it after the sun goes down.
Capt. Hank is an ideal source for information about the history and goings-on for the island. He’s very conscientious about protecting the environment and has a great philosophy on life. He also gets involved in charitable activities on the island. Be sure to engage him in conversation and you’re sure to find a mix of intelligent discussion, honest views and some great stories from both on and off island. Absolutely, positively plan a snorkeling adventure with Capt. Hank on his seaworthy vessel the Pot Luck II. He knows the good spots and can read the weather and seas to get the best out of those locations. Be sure to follow his advice at any given site; you won’t be disappointed. My wife and I have snorkeled many places in our lives, but the adventure with Capt. Hank was the most outstanding we’ve ever had.
By all means, adventure out and around the island. Visit the many beaches. Have lunch or dinner at an out-of-the-way eatery. Go shopping and people watching in the bustling town. But when you want to relax and let your mind & body unwind, head back to Treetops. You'll return from vacation a new person with some great memories.

From day one, Captain Hank went above and beyond what was expected to make my wife and I's stay at Treetops and St John a great one. Rather than giving us directions to pass along to the taxi drivers, Hank picked us up in his boat, Pot Luck. We were then treated to an awesome, scenic cruise to what would be our home away from home over the next 7 nights.
Each morning, we were treated to fresh fruit and wonderfully delicious baked goods including muffins (my favorite), scones, etc served along with fresh juice, coffee and more.
We highly recommend hiring Captain Hank to take you out fishing, snorkeling, etc on a day trip to all of the spots only he knows about. While fishing we caught Mahi, Grouper and more; while snorkeling we saw Tarpon, a Shark, Sea Turtles, Rays and more. What a memorable day!
Beyond being a great guide on the seas, Hank also repeatedly steered us in the right direction for food, drinks and other island hidden gems.
We can't thank Hank enough for the great time he helped us experience while in St John. After returning from the trip, when asked about our host we always recall a statement Hank made one morning. We found Hank dressed in red slacks, dress shirt and a bow tie. I had to ask, "why so dapper this morning, Hank?" His response, "everyday is a gift, so I figured why not wrap it up with a bow?"
Do yourself a favor and be sure to consider this great B&B as your home away from home while in St John.

If you are looking for a quiet, quaint, friendly place to stay that offers a great value then this is the place for you. If you are looking for luxury with an ocean view that is in the middle of it all then you may want to keep looking.
What we liked about our stay:
- Karen emailed detailed driving instructions without which we would have had difficulty finding the place
- The Captain's Quarters was a good size for two people with lots of windows and light
- Beach chairs, coolers and beach towels were provided
- Small refrigerator with adequate freezer space (Bunkhouse freezer only has room enough for an ice cube tray)
- Separate enclosed space for toilet/sink (Bunkhouse room has no door between the toilet and sleeping area)
- Air conditioning units in the room (we only used the fan in the unit at night time)
- Breakfast each morning consisted of hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, coffee/juice and a fresh baked pastry that was different each morning
- Karen and Hank were very good hosts that supplied information on where to go, eat, etc.
What could have been better or improved:
- The outdoor shower felt somewhat exposed as it can be viewed from the parking area and outdoor seating area
- Limited amount of hot water
- No indoor shower (not a fan of showering in the dark/wind/rain)
Because I know hotel/BB reviews are read in advance of booking trips I thought I would include some other tips for St John so you can skip this if only interested in Treetops
- Hills, switchbacks and lack of parking make renting a Jeep preferable to a car
- We rented from Amalie Car Rental and had a great experience with the Jeep waiting at the airport and dropping it off right at the curb in front of the check in counters on departure
- If riding the car barge between St Thomas and St John buy a one way ticket because if you buy the return trip you have to wait for that specific ship when returning
- When flying out of St Thomas you will have to go through customs so be sure to have proper ID
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are the busiest days on St John due to the cruise ships that ferry people over to the North Shore beaches and Cruz Bay. If you avoid these areas until 5 pm then the crowds will be gone.

My fiancé and I stayed in the Captain's Quarters at Treetops. We LOVED it!
Some of the best parts of our stay included the beautiful room with a nice seating area and small kitchen, the delicious breakfasts, the A/C (this was very nice!...I believe only the Captain's Quarters has A/C), no TV (my favorite part!), and of course Hank's boat trip which was spectacular. Hank was a great host...we wouldn't have change a thing about our stay.
Some other notes: The area is not within walking distance of downtown, but that was not an issue for us. We enjoyed being away from the crowd. There is wi-fi, so you are not completely out of the loop. The outdoor shower was strange at first, but you get used to it.
St. John is a beautiful, breathtaking island and I am counting down the days until we can visit again (at Treetops of course).

Recently my friend and I had the good luck to make a trip to Saint John; our first and definitely not our last!
We were fortunate to stay at Treetops, in Fish Bay, about 10 minutes and a world away from town(Cruz Bay). Our stay was a week, and despite a missed connection in San Juan on the way down, our time was relaxing, rejuvenating, and fun.
Karen and Hank, who run Treetops, helped us navigate our way around the island and its beaches, snorkeling options, bars, and for my friend, shopping places. My ideal vacation is spent almost entirely on a beach, and Karen steered us to the right beaches which made our trip the perfect balance between activity and inactivity. We enjoyed breakfast every morning with freshly baked items, an egg or two, fresh Starbucks from the Kuerig, and ample fresh fruit.
Our room, the Captain's Quarters, was spacious, and equipped with a dorm-sized 'fridge, sink, and everything you would need to eat in. We had the use of the Webber grill, but did not use it, as we just got in to a different rhythm, skipping dinner most nights. The room had air conditioning, which my friend greatly appreciated as it was warmer than we were accustomed to during our stay. The bed was very comfortable and I am told the sheets were nice. There was an outdoor shower which was welcome after a long day on the beach.
The highlight of our vacation was a trip out on Hank's boat. Hank is a certified Coast Guard Captain, and his boat is 'sea-kindly'. My friend was inexperienced on boats, but Hank made her feel relaxed and comfortable. He knows the local waters, snorkeling spots, and ins and outs of the many bays and inlets all around Saint John. We were grateful for the chance to see Saint John from this different perspective.
The hardest thing about going to Saint John, is leaving. The island is as close to paradise as you are likely to find. We were blessed that we got the chance to stay at Treetops, and can't wait until our next trip back. Who knows, maybe in a year or less.

My Wife and I spent a week at Treetops on our honeymoon to St. John. We had a great time at Treetops. We stayed in the captians quarters. Which is a good size room, with the bed blocked off in one area and good sized living area with a sink, fridge, microwave, table and chairs and couch. Outdoors shower was great. Breakfast was awesome. Hanks stories and island advice was great. They offer beach towels, chairs and coolers for you to use. A car is a must for this B&B but I would say a car is a must if you are really going to get a good experience of the St. John. Got nothing bad to say about this place. We really enjoyed our time at the Treetops.

It's been two months since my wife and I returned home from a week-long trip to St. John, and we still talk almost every day about our wonderful experience at Treetops. Hank was, quite simply, the best host we've ever had: a larger than life guy who's never overbearing and always takes the time to make you feel at home. He went above and beyond to give us the best trip possible, and I can't thank him enough. He's a good, honest man and a big reason why we had such a great vacation (it seems like he knows everyone and everything on the island, which means that he's an amazing resource for recommendations on where to eat, snorkel, hike, etc.).
I've been going on about Hank, but Treetops itself is wonderful. If you're looking for something beautiful, clean, cozy, and quiet, this is the place for you. It's not a big, glitzy resort; it's better: a real gem of a place tucked among the hills, trees, birds, lizards, and frogs. It's like the essence of St. John distilled into one bright, happy place (it's impossible not to feel content eating breakfast on the patio with the sun streaming in, Hank telling a story, and a delicious homemade muffin on your plate). It's obvious that Hank and his wife (who we unfortunately didn't get to meet) love Treetops and want their guests to love it too.
We don't get to travel often--in fact, our last big trip was to St. John on our honeymoon ten years ago--which is why it meant so much to us to be able to stay at a place like Treetops. Hopefully it won't be another ten years before we can return, but whenever we do we'll definitely be staying at Treetops.
There's a reason for all of the glowing reviews for Treetops on Tripadvisor: they're true. See for yourself.

This is the best lodging experience I have ever had. If that first sentence is not enough to convince you to stay at Tree Tops, I’ll elaborate. The principal attraction of Tree Tops is its owners, Hank & Karen. They are thoroughly good, salt-of-the earth people. They made me feel more than welcome. They shared their knowledge of St. John’s hidden jewels (Francis Bay, Vie’s Beach) with me. They made restaurant recommendations that were spot-on. The fruit, muffins and coffee put out for breakfast were fresh and delicious.
Apart from Hank & Karen, the accommodations were great. My room (First Mate’s Quarters) is designed so that you feel like you’re outdoors, even when you’re indoors. It was clean, tastefully decorated and contained some great extras (cookies, beer, rum and other goodies). It was wonderful to wake up to the sun coming over the mountains, and to sit out on the deck at night and plot what I must do to make St. John my home one day. If you like your ego pampered, you can stay at Caneel or the Westin. If you appreciate St. John and its inhabitants for what they are intrinsically, with or without Caneel or the Westin, then stay with Hank & Karen. With the money you save, rent a jeep, go to Vie’s, share that beach with three other souls, have a conch fritter, and thank God for Tree Tops.

There is walk-in snorkeling along the north shore beaches, about a 15 minute ride. The best snorkeling is done off our boat (Pot Luck) a short ride away!
We are a small (3 guest room) B&B in Fish Bay, on the south side of St. John. Guests usually rent their own vehicles at the airport on St. Thomas and drive over on the car ferry.
I'm sorry, but I am not familiar with La Fortuna. Please see our website or call us for more information.
Hello,
Thanks for your interest in Treetops. We have never had pets before, but I would be willing to discuss more. We are currently closed for hurricane season and will re-open Oct. 1.
Best regards,
