Exceptional! The hotel is made of several buildings among beautifully maintained gardens with flowers and fruit trees. Yes all rooms have an ocean view. There are stairs and small inclines going to the rooms, but nothing strenuous or uncomfortable. It is quiet and secluded, but 10 minutes from the West End ferry terminal and 30 minutes from Road town. If you are looking for a bustling, loud place with lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance, this is probably not for you. But if you are looking for a peaceful and elegant place to stay this hotel is a must. There is a decent size beautiful pool with a bar stocked with beer, soft drinks etc that you serve yourself on an honor system. There is a small private beach with comfortable loungers and the Tremonti restaurant and bar, their casual restaurant and bar, on the beach. If you want a larger beach, Long bay is about 1 mile and Smuggler's cove less than 2 miles away. Both beautiful. The restaurant is superb. We stayed 5 nights and did not feel the need to go anywhere else for dinner. The breakfast is made to order, not the usual buffet with runny eggs, etc sitting in warming trays for hours. The staff is polite, friendly and attentive. Andrea and Rupert, the managers, are excellent hosts and around and available for personalized service. I cannot say enough good things about their customer service. The first night we got there we had an issue. The next day, the way that it was resolved was above and beyond any expectations we had. When in Tortola again we will certainly stay at the Sugar Mill.

We had 8 nights here at the end of November, we work a very busy business and needed complete relaxation and that is what we got! We enjoyed the all inclusive package which includes airport pick ups, a day on a sailing boat island hopping and a round the island tour with luxe picnic, all were fantastic. Breakfast on the beach side each day, we skipped lunch but same location, dinner in the gorgeous restaurant, fine dining, high quality meats and fish, extensive wine and cocktail list, completely spoilt! We hired the sugar mill car for a couple of days and went to various other spots and islands. The property itself is super tropical with gorgeous plants and flowers. The room was huge, comfortable and completely dark so great sleep was guaranteed. We didn’t use the pool and didn’t see anyone in it but plenty of people nipping to the honesty bar. The resort has 95% USA guests but we are british / Spanish, didn’t go to socialize but met some smashing other guests which added to the nice friendly atmosphere. The bathroom in our room 134 had been renovated and had a Japanese toilet, I’m saddened to now be home with a non heated toilet seat, feeling like an absolute peasant.
The owners are around and love a little chat, it’s obvious they care a lot about guest experience. The cherry on the sugar mill cake though is its managers Andrea and Rupert, it’s obvious they have a lot on their plate running the place with guests, restaurants, staff, orders, Maintence etc etc but they come across completely relaxed, fun, smiley, having a laugh with you but with an overall immense pride and professionalism which reflects in everything. Thank you for making our trip guys. I’m not sure we would return as we don’t go to the same places but we Will wholeheartedly recommend this place for years to come, and it possible send some family there too

Everything was spectacular for my stay at the Sugar Mill Hotel! I absolutely loved my room and I can't say enough about the beautiful view I woke up to every single morning. I traveled solo and stayed at the hotel for 12 nights and never got tired of my stay. The property was lush and rich with a variety of plants. The staff seated me in the main dining room at a table personally selected for my evenings there. Since, I dined alone I wanted a quiet table that was not in the way of other guests but would still have a view of the waves and trees in the distance. The food was 5 star tasting and presentation. You have to try the Lobster Thermador. Both the filet minion and the rib eye were healthy cuts and cooked exactly to my liking. The reduction sauce served with the beef was out of this world!
I spent a lot of time at the beach café and enjoyed the breakfast food and handmade pizza. The fish tacos were wonderful as well with just the right complementary sauce.
I throughly enjoyed my massages from Marjorie. She is attentive, well skilled and a pleasure to talk to. I showed up one day absolutely sunburned and she knew exactly what to do. She even went outside to cut a long stem of Aloe Vera, removed the juice inside and put in a cup! I used it that night and my pain was relieved.
I can't say enough about the staff. All of them were hospitable and friendly. I will definitely come back to Sugar Mill next time I'm in Tortola. It was hard to say goodbye and ended with a warm hug from Andrea. She absolutely made my stay unforgettable.

We enjoyed a perfect family vacation at Sugar Mill. We were in 3 rooms, all of which were comfortable with great views of the sea. The location in the water is gorgeous; we enjoyed the small private beach at the hotel and for a bigger beach Smugglers Cove is just 2 miles away. The restaurant is outstanding, the best on the island. There isn’t a better breakfast on the island either (and it’s included in the room rate). Rupert and Andrea were fantastic hosts who made everything about our stay easy. The vibe at Sugar Mill was also greatly appreciated by our group - for example, for New Year’s Eve the restaurant looked beautiful and was very festive, but thankfully didn’t involve a usurious pre-fixe menu. If you want a drink by the pool, there is a stocked fridge where you pay by the honor system. We’ve stayed at Sugar Mill twice now and look forward to our next visit.

Sugar Mill Hotel & Spa located on Carrot Bay in Tortola is a holiday paradise. The rooms are well air conditioned and nicely furnished. The shower attached to the rear of the spacious bathroom is located in the open air which is a nice touch. Our room Al’s had a porch attached.
The grounds are beautifully tropical, with palms, flamboyant trees and fruit trees namely mango, star fruit, soursop, and bread fruit. Slight negative here after it rains the mosquitos will appear and pester those of you who are a good insect lunch!
The restaurant is al fresco with beautiful views out to sea and neighboring BVI Islands. The quality of their offerings are first class. A choice of ‘fresh catch of the day’ ranging from grouper to trigger fish, mahi mahi, red fish etc. The lobster is delightful, especially served Thermidor style. Half was sufficient for me. Steaks and lamb are good quality and cooked to order.
Pre and post dinner drinks are professionally prepared and served by Vicky, Curtis, Brandon and others. Wait service was competent and led by Head waitress Marilyn.
Breakfast was served beachside at the Tramonti. Shantel and Deanna are the usual wait staff. Production from the kitchen suffered a little from ‘island time’ speed, that said all offerings were nicely cooked.
The on-site spa offers good quality massages according to my wife who highly recommended the work of Marjorie. After your spa you can take a short walk over to the pool and cool off.
So who makes the place tick? Andrea and her husband Rupert are visible and active everyday and have oversight of the restaurant every evening. The owners Dennis and Mary, two Brits are visible daily. They have rebuilt the property post Hurricane and have ensured that the property continues to be a wonderful first choice experience of paradise and comfort in the British Virgin Islands.

The Sugar Mill Hotel and Tortolla, BVI along the coast where this hotel is located the views are absolutely breathtaking, more so than any Island in the Caribbean and we have been to all of them. If you want a getaway at a quiet place with a fantastic Gourmet restaurant and beauty all around you then this is the place. Private Cottages tastefully furnished have direct views out over the water with your own private balcony. We loved the privacy, the furnishings, the king size bed, the pillows , the lighting fixtures, and the tea, regular coffee, expresso, and water provided complimentarily. The Staff, managers, and owners could not be more hospitable and accommodating. If you pay for the "all inclusive" (which we did not) we think it is the better option (Look at what is included) Lastly we rented a car for part of our stay which was a definite challenge with left side of the road driving plus rugged steep roads and although scary at first, It was a really fun experience.

An excellent experience from beginning to end. Responsiveness to emails can be slow at times, but always within 48 hours maximum. Nothing to get your underwear in a bunch about! The hotel is located on Apple Bay and has 24 rooms with a pool, beach, and spa. The restaurant is very good when compared to other island choices; and probably the best on the island. The setting is beautiful, relaxing, and enjoyable. I liked this hotel much better than the Scrub Island Resort, which I found to be quite generic and felt like I was staying in a condo at the marina. The Sugar Mill has that island feel with accompanying friendly and helpful staff, a dining room that exudes charm, very good food, and is relaxing. There is an honor bar (yes - that relaxed of an atmosphere) at the pool and a restaurant on the sandy beach, though small, but very beautiful and consistent to the environs. Be aware that the beach is across the road, but super easy walking distance. The owners, Mary & Dennis Carmedy, and managers, Andrea & Rupert Starkey, are very qualified hoteliers and have added value to the property ever since purchasing the Sugar Mill. Previous reviews claiming a loss of fidelity or decreased appeal due to upgrades and rebuilding were not noted at all. Rather, the upgraded construction and improvements are notably consistent with the environs, beautiful, and consistent to the harmonious appeal of the property. I have stayed at numerous properties on Tortola, but found the Sugar Mill the best of all. A definite return in my book!

My husband and I took a trip to Tortola with 2 other couples and had the pleasure of staying 5 days and 4 nights at the Sugar Mill Hotel. The Hotel was about a 45 min cab ride from the airport, but no worries- the taxi drivers will make sure you have enough beverages to pass the time! Upon arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome and cold washcloths and champagne/wine/ beer whatever we wanted. The entire Sugar Mill Staff was very accommodating the whole stay and the Managers Andrea & Rupert made sure we were having a good time and our needs were taken care of. The first day of our stay we hung out at the pool and enjoyed the honor bar stocked with beer, wine & mixers. We asked the bar staff for vodka & ice and immediately they brought up a bottle and a bag of ice and added it to the mini fridge. The second day it rained and umbrellas were out in our rooms and board games were brought down to entertain us. We ended up catching a ride w/ Rupert to the Jost Van Dyke ferry and spending the day at The Soggy Dollar with the best Pain Killers. The third day we went on the catamaran tour with Rupert & the owner Dennis. We went snorkeling by Norman Island and Peter Island, even got to jump off the back of Willie T’s pirate ship bar. Lunch and drinks were included and everything was delicious. The following day we did the round island tour with Rupert & Dennis again. We loved hearing all the stories about the island, the people & the hurricane. We hopped from beach to beach and everyone was empty like they cleared the entire beach just for us! The day ended with a trip to the Rum Distillery aka “the Rummery” and BBCs at Stoutts Lookout. It was a wonderful trip and we made great memories. Would definitely recommend the Sugar Mill to anyone visiting Tortola.

My husband and I recently returned from a ten night, fully inclusive holiday at the Sugar Mill. The fully inclusive package includes airport pickups, all food, drink and two trips.
Our room was large with a lovely view and had everything you could need. Our room was cleaned to a great standard and everything was topped up without prompting.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner was freshly cooked with top quality ingredients. Presentation was spot on too. The food was simply the best food we have ever had on all the holidays we have experienced over the last 24 years.
The two trips we had as part of our package were well organised and great fun. The catamaran trip was rocky due to the weather but Dennis and Rupert looked after us well. Rupert took us on a tour of the island for the second trip and he is full of knowledge and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Mary prepared a buffet for both these trips and again the food was so good.
Mary and Dennis are exceptional hosts, always around to meet and greet, whether you are a hotel guest or just eating at one of the two restaurants. Also forming a great team are Rupert and Andrea, who again are so helpful and willing to advise. In fact, we found all the staff so happy and accommodating.
We will be returning again in the future and look forward to it.

The Sugar Mill Hotel is truly a hidden gem. This resort is five stars plus and I can not wait to visit again. The Sugar Mill is elegant with a glamourous vibe yet not stuffy and very comfortable. The owners Dennis and Mary are friendly hands on delightful people. The restaurants have a European beach side feel and the food is delicious. The sparkling pool, white sands beach and romantic rooms are surrounded by palms and tropical foliage . Best vacation ever.

Additionally, there are other restaurants on the island that are great. Sugar Mill would be happy to arrange taxi to and from them for you . They are lovely and very accommodating! Although, I’m not sure you will find better food elsewhere !!!
The resort is hilly. The paths are paved, but it would be difficult with a walker. Request one of there lower level rooms and it may be doable. /the management is great, ask them how they could best assist you.
There are more places to choose from in the Tortola area.
