An oasis in the boardwalk area of the capital city of Dutch St. Maarten. The 1905 Pasanggrahan Royal Guesthouse is the former residence of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, and one of the few remaining outposts of Dutch colonial life in the Caribbean. Recommended in the New York Times travel, in an article on affordable travel and lodging in the...

My husband and I recently stayed for 4 nights at the dear Pasanggrahan Royal Guesthouse. We were sailing for a week so we stayed 2 nights before and 2 nights after. Our first accommodations were most comfortable, on the third floor of the old hotel. The bathroom was not modern but perfectly acceptable. The bed was comfortable including a porch...

My mother & I recently stayed here before we left on a cruise last weekend. It's located right in the heart of town, on one of the main roads. It has a graceful shaded front porch & the lobby is all open, you can walk directly through it onto their back patio, & then directly onto the boardwalk and beach....

The hotel has a new parking garage in downtown Philipsburg, which makes it so much more convenient. The view is incredible, facing Great Bay where sail boats, yachts, and cruise ships dock, and allowing access to a nice white beach. The hotel retains its historic charm in the lobby, with all the modern amenities in its new set of rooms....

We had two nights there recently and were treated like family. They were very helpful and although we only had two breakfasts there, the food was very good. Amazing location with parking made it easy for us to get our business done. Would stay again for sure!

Arrived late night, the guy at front desk was friendly - even if his English was poor ( I think he was replacing somebody by the way he was acting). There was nothing to eat- "restaurant closed" he says. My taxi driver made a phone call and arranged for a pizza ( front desk guy was overwhelmed by this task)....

We stayed there for one night prior to our cruise and I would highly recommend Pasanggrahan for that purpose. We were in the newer rooms with oceanfront views and a great balcony. It was such a pleasure to sit on the balcony and "people watch" as they strolled along the boardwalk. The view of the water and sunset was worth...

We arrived in SXM to find that our flight to Saba was cancelled due to crosswinds. The folks at Pasanggrahan helped us out with a couple of rooms and friendly service. We enjoyed the view from our third floor balcony and had a great time. Next time we will plan for a layover here. It made the trip much more...

We stayed here for a week from February 12-18, 2015 and loved it! We were in room 309 and would request a room on that floor again. Loved the view from our balcony and we spent 3-4 hours every day on the balcony (every morning and again every evening). This beach was our favorite as it was nice and calm...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
"The Pasanggrahan Royal Guesthouse is St. Maarten's oldest and most charming inn. Formerly a rooster farm, Governor's home, V.I.P. guest house, and Dutch Royal Residence, it is ideally located in Philipsburg on a white sand beach amidst enchanting tropical gardens and enclosed within its original stone walls: a green oasis hidden on Front Street. A national landmark and one of the last bastions of West Indian culture, the Pasanggrahan is secluded and offbeat in the heart of St. Maarten’s capital, and it's a minute's stroll to shops, restaurants, casinos, banks and other institutions and activities. This authentic, colonial style inn has all the special features of a larger hotel including concierge service, the Sidney Greenstreet Bar, boardwalk beach bar, complementary chaise lounges, beach towels, and social hour. “A special place for special people” General Information"This vintage West Indian-style guesthouse has a prime spot on the beach in Philipsburg, sandwiched between the busy, narrow main street of Philipsburg and the harbor. It's set back and shaded under tall trees, a charming relic from another time. In fact, this was once the summer home of the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina, and the interior has a gracious, late-19th-century feel, with peacock bamboo chairs, Indian spool tables, and a gilt-framed oil portrait of the Dutch queen. The small- to medium-size accommodations have queen-size, double, or king-size beds with four-poster designs; some are in the main building and others are in an adjoining annex. The finest have genuine colonial flair, with antique secretaries and four-posters swaddled in mosquito netting, madras valances, hand-stitched quilts, beamed ceilings, and still life paintings. Set among lush palms is the harborfront Pasanggrahan Restaurant, which specializes in fresh fish caught by the hotel's own deep-sea charter fishing boat and family-style dinners. ... more   less
