Following a meticulous restoration, Dorado Beach emerges more spectacular than ever, featuring expanded offerings, amenities and facilities. Our Ladies and Gentlemen are pleased to welcome guests once again. Somewhere between idyllic and perfection sits one of the most enchanting Puerto Rico luxury resorts — one that calls to those who believe every journey should be a voyage of discovery. With its serene coastline, private residences, spa retreat and a harmonious sense of place that blends masterfully into the natural surroundings, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is a rare resort that invites guests to arrive spellbound — and depart speechless.
We chose to visit the Ritz Carlton Dorado in Puerto Rico for a short holiday - it was a great choice. The property is magnificent. It is an expansive property with beautiful beaches and pools. The sense of privacy is incredible. We did not leave the resort at all - something we never do on vacation (we always venture out to explore.) The clientele is also very nice and respectful of space and privacy. The rooms are quite beautiful as well and well appointed - we loved the fact that we had a plunge pool (highly recommend ....) and that we could walk onto the beach.
Most of the food is quite high quality. We ate all of our meals at the resort. In terms of restaurants - Maleo is the place to go - we dined there twice. Positive - we have a "negatativo" experience (they served us melted ice cream after keeping us waiting for 40 minutes!) Enchanto - good but not spectacular, and expensive.
However, the real issue at the Ritz is that the service is very haphazard -- The staff is nice, friendly, and warm -- however, they make so many mistakes. They handle the mistakes very nicely - however, we experienced so many service errors it was almost comical. You just cannot charge that much money and make the so many basic service mistakes that we experienced. Some examples:
The butler service is unpolished and they cannot seem to get it right - we had a different person most days - which was very confusing. Basically the butlers were useless. Housekeeping was frighteningly inadequate and variable - one day they barely cleaned the room and they missed turndown on 2 of our 4 nights (this is even though we clarified the time etc with out butler). Even when we checked in the room was not really clean (moderately clean but not really clean).
In general, it was one service mistake after another .... Each time, they addressed our concerns but wow, how many mistakes could we forgive.... Here is a great example - the spa -- spectacular property and treatments -- but somehow my services were booked incorrectly. They rectified it and were very nice about taking care of things. But the mistake should not have happened in the first place.
So, overall I think that the Ritz has the potential for great service however it seems that they are just not fully recovered yet. And it shows in the service.
Would we go back? maybe but after they have been open for a while and have sharpened their service considerably.
If you are looking for a relaxing luxurious spot to be pampered in, then look no further... From the moment you pull up to the moment you leave you are there VIP guest... Attention to detail is amazing... The ambassadors are one of the many things that make this resort stand out against the competition.. Any request wasn’t too big, and if anything they wanted to be challenged even further to show you that you are there special guest.. We had a PLUNGE POOL room, and would hands down tell you to spend the extra to have such a room... All the restaurants were delicious but my fav was PANELA.. Also I don’t drink alcohol but that wasn’t an issue to them as they loved the challenge to mix some delicious drinks for me..The beach and pool area were just as nice if not nicer than the pics online.. Everyone learns your name and everyone generally seems so happy to serve you as well as work on the premises... This place will always have a special spot in my heart and I do believe I’m pretty difficult to please and they sure won my stamp of approval.. Like others in this comment section, my wife and I have traveled a lot, and have stayed in some super nice luxurious resorts and this one is probably tied with Ventanas in Cabo... To conclude everyone there is amazing and personable but one gentleman stuck out like no other...Omar in the ambassador program is by far a huge asset to this establishment... He is sooo personable and so eager to please, And he does this all at such an ease... He made us feel like nothing else mattered but our happiness in the reserve... But I also have to say, EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE at this resort deserves recognition for there positive attitude and there desire to please.. This is a well run machine and my hats off to a resort that just reopened after a devastating hit by Hurricane Maria..We wish you folks all the best and thank you for an amazing time... We hope to see you folks real soon again...
My wife and I stayed for just a few days, but everything about it was beyond our expectations. We were not sure if the property would not have some remnants of storm damage still and also generally what the area would look like. We were amazed at how lush everything was. We understand the Ritz spent quite a bit of money to plant new vegetation. It shows, but the island generally has bounced back as far as storm damage to the landscape is concerned. We know other hotels are yet to reopen so the Ritz did a great job at not only opening, but getting everything looking wonderful.
I can honestly say it is the most beautiful resort I believe we have been to and that says quite a bit as we have been to many great places. Hard to match the combination of beautiful rooms close to a wonderful beach with such great waves and water.
We had a room with a plunge pool. Well worth the money. The room and back patio and plunge pool area are pretty much new. The doors to the outside open up to the outside. You can hear the waves. The beach is beautiful and well kept.
We stayed on property with just one outing. The restaurants are nice, but we liked Positivo the best. It is on the beach. Get a table in the sand early evening. The other restaurant menus for evening meals were nice I am sure, but we didn’t try them as we have simple tastes and the menus were fancier than our unsophisticated tastes would prefer. Staff are great. They work hard to please. The bikes were nice to have.
If you are wondering whether to take the plunge and reserve time there, don’t hesitate. I am sure the word will get out and it will only get more expensive as time goes by and more people learn how nice it is.
First the positive -- this place is truly amazing in terms of the hotel, rooms, beaches, spa, tennis courts, swimming pools, water sports. My family and I made the most of all of these and combined with the awesome 88 F weather (when back home in NY it was freezing) made us very happy.
Unfortunately there were a few issues that put quite a damper on our experience. Every meal was very slow, including twice having to wait 1.5 hours for room service dinner. The restaurants didn't have tables unless you booked well in advance, and the service at the pools was also terribly slow, even for a singe drink. At least four times the orders were wrong (we have 3 vegetarians in our family of 4) e.g. gnocchi with pesto came with meat. And it's pricey for quite mediocre food - a meal for 4 without drinks can easily be $150-200 - which we'd be more than willing to pay fir it was good, but not for something that tasted like Olive Garden or Applebees. Also, while the staff were polite and wanted to be helpful, they were trying way too hard. So for example, we had 3 different people come and apologize about the dinner - when really we just want them to get it right (and one apology is enough - three actually makes it worse).
Perhaps they aren't fully ready for guests - after all they only just re-opened a month or two ago. But that's no excuse at their price point.
I would consider going back if their service and quality of food improves, but without that - there are many better places to go for the same (or less) price.

Dear Lennono, Thank you for your review of the resort. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the facilities. I am though disappointed that we did not meet your expections and I apologize for the experience you had. I have shared your comment and with our culinary team as we want to ensure that we correct these opportunities as soon as possible. We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future. Best Regards, George M. Sotelo
My family and I have been going to Cabo for the past 10 years for Thanksgiving! This year we decided to give Puerto Rico a try as felt compelled o help tourism in any way that we could. I am so glad we did...
Our travel agent suggested Dorado Beach as they had just reopened after the hurricane (Lisa, thank you so much for the recommendation) and the property was a huge surprise and honestly it surpassed my expectations.
The resort is lush, beautiful and there are so many things to do that we never left the resort. My kids love the Ambassadors of the Environment, the beaches and of course the water park!
My husband and I enjoyed the spa on several days and truly the best that I have ever experienced. We had Thanksgiving dinner at Coa which was by far the best turkey dinner I have had in many years and hands down better than any hotel festive dinner we have had.
All of the staff went out of their way to ensure we had a magical time as many knew this was our first time to the resort. The weather was absolutely perfect throughout the entire stay and dreaded going back to 30 degree weather in NY.
Sorry Cabo... we have a new "go to" home for Thanksgiving.

I cannot tell you for certain the main pool was heated but it was plenty warm. We did end up moving to the hot tub several times however to get warm when the rain was heavy. The temp was comfortable. We did not use the other pool near Encanto. Our plunge pool at our room was also warm but we noticed warmer when the sun was out and heating it. We dealt with a lot of rain last week. All in all they were not cold and the ocean was also very comfortable. Have fun.

We went as a couple and although we dealt with some kids we still had a wonderful time. It was very Adult Friendly and romantic. The Spa was kid free and amazing as was the main pool most of the time. The Beach was also big enough not to deal with them. You can so walk and ride bikes on the very long, over 5 miles total, path. There were times when we did say kids should not really be here and they were loud, it was not often and or long so it was not an issue over all.

It’s heading west on highway 22, from San Juan, about 45 minutes highway time from the airport. We didn’t have a problem with mosquitoes but you can always get one of those repellent bracelets or use a bug spray. We were not in a heavily wooded area either. We stayed at Plantation 2 which was wonderful. Tip: if you are renting a car be sure it has a toll road sticker. You must have it on your car to travel on the highways. Hope this helps!
